2 Chaplain s Message Dear brothers in Christ, As we gather at our September meeting, we will be installing the new executive, giving thanks and praise to God for their many and varied gifts and for the gift of their leadership. We also ask the Holy Spirit to richly bless them as they begin to serve Council 8919 in these roles. These good and faithful leaders can depend on the support of all of the members of Council Our Lady of the Atonement Parish will gather on September 17 to celebrate forty years of God s blessings as a faith community. The Atonement Friars, in the early 70 s, joyfully gathered a large and vibrant community under the patronage of Our Lady of the Atonement. Fifteen years later, the Fr. Paul Wattson Council 8919 was born and has served the parish in a substantial way ever since, through significant financial and volunteer support. In many ways, Council 8919 members have given shape to the present-day vibrant parish, along with their counterparts, the members of the Catholic Women s League. Needless to say, Our Lady of the Atonement Parish owes a debt of gratitude to Council 8919 for its enormous contribution over the past 25 years, and we look forward to enjoying the same kind of life-giving, big-hearted relationship in the years to come. On the diocesan level, Bishop Fabbro has invited all parishes into a process of spiritual renewal. Responding to that call, our parish pastoral council has taken up that challenge by committing our parish to a process entitled, ARISE Together in Christ. This process was developed by Renew, a program of spiritual renewal that our parish participated in some twenty years ago. It is my fervent hope that the members of Council 8919 will not only endorse this renewal process, but will choose to participate in it beginning this coming October. I look forward to personally encouraging each member to seriously consider this renewal opportunity. In Christ, Fr. Bob 2

4 Deputy Grand Knight s Message.Hello Brother Knights My name is Sam DeRose, your newly elected Deputy Grand Knight. I would like to thank you for electing me for this position. It is an honour and a privilege to serve on this council. I look forward to working with each and everyone of you along, with the new Grand Knight, Arthur Huggins and the Executive Committee. As you are aware, there is much to be done with all the different charities and functions we support. As in the past, we will ensure to continue to strive forward. It would be most beneficial that our fellow Brother Knights come forward and provide any assistance and/or suggestions in order that this goal is achieved. We are an organization of Catholic men who work together, who aid one another to strengthen our faith, to be a strong pillar for our community and Church and help those in need. I would like to thank you in advance for all your time and efforts. Learning the faith, living the faith. 6 Report Report on Supreme Convention My Dear Brother Knights. It was an extreme pleasure and privilege to represent the Knights of Columbus, London West Diocesan Association, at the 129 th Supreme Convention. This event is an opportunity for Knights from all over the world to come together and share successes and challenges from the past year. Here are some of my experiences: Seven delegates represented Ontario along with Arthur Peters, Past State Deputy, Joe Salini, State Deputy, and Kevin Daudlin, State Secretary. Bob Cayea, Supreme Director, and Bishop Simard, State Chaplain were also present. Sunday, July 31, an introduction session was held to get to know the other Ontario representatives. Monday began with a Canadian Delegates Meeting. Presentations were made about Chalice a Catholic International Child Support Program based in Nova Scotia which is similar to World Vision, Martyr s Shrine in Midland and the Wheelchair Program. Afterward, a membership seminar was held which emphasized the need for new members and the reasons to join the Knights. These include the moral obligation to offer membership to all eligible Catholic men, the chance to share in the good works we do and the availability to protect yourself and your family through the insurance program. During the late afternoon a Pin Exchange took place where everyone trades pins from their respective home states in an effort to get to know each other. Penny and I collected many beautiful pins from all over the world. On Tuesday, a Concelebrated Mass by 11 Cardinals, 80 Bishops and many Priests inspired all present. A business session was held in the afternoon where Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight gave a State of the Union address covering all aspects of the Knights of Columbus. He talked about membership, the good works accomplished, insurance status and the future. The talk was most informative and I m sure we ll be seeing highlights in upcoming Columbia Magazines and other news releases. Tuesday evening brought the Supreme Dinner, a fancy gala attended by approximately 2,500 delegates and their families. All men in attendance wore white jackets and it was something to see! This was followed at 10:30 p.m. by a meeting of delegates to prepare for the elections to take place the next day. Wednesday morning started with a Concelebrated Mass followed by a business session that included a talk by the Archbishop of Los Angeles about the Church s view of Immigration and one by an Archbishop of Quebec on behalf of the Association of Canadian Bishops. Elections for the Supreme Board and the Supreme Board of Directors took place with 503 delegates voting. Eight of 27 Board of Directors were elected. One note Bob Cayea s run as Supreme Director ends next year after nine years. After witnessing what happens at this convention and all the things that go on behind the scenes in running the Knights of Columbus, I respect what a huge commitment this represents! Past Supreme Knight Virgil Dechant gave a great talk about the New Evangelization, something will we all be hearing much more about in future. Thursday again began with Mass followed by the business session to deal with the 325 resolutions brought to the delegates. All were reviewed, grouped together or rewritten. Most were approved, some declined and others forwarded to the Board for further review. Later, a talk was given by the bishop of the Philippines about divorce and preservation of life in that country. This was followed by the Archbishop of Texas speaking about a movie soon to be released about the persecution of Catholics in Mexico in the 1850 s. In summary, these were the themes throughout the Convention: Overall theme So That the World May Know New Hope. Our Lady of Guadeloupe. Canonization of Fr. Michael J. McGivney. Pope John Paul II. The Knights are building a Shrine dedicated to him in Washington, D.C. New Evangelization. Truly, this was a wonderful experience in the life of this humble Knight! Vivat Jesus, Dan Dumouchelle, PGK. 6
