2 B & ukon Knight ovember December 2014 B & ukon Knight ovember December 2014 From D our xcellencies, everend Fathers, Brother Knights dward hawchuk tate Deputy hristmas is rapidly approaching and to quote the old song, t s the most wonderful time of the year. he dvent season is specifically designed to focus our attention on the birth of the essiah which will eventually lead to the redemption of mankind. his is the time of year that like to reflect on the birth of a tiny baby who is the key to unlock the sin of dam and ve. Because of this amazing potential for eternal happiness for all of us, people of Faith are filled with hope and joy. hese are two of the many feelings that propel us forward doing the great works of Fraternal harity that our oly Father has called upon us to continue doing. n his address to the upreme Board of Directors last year, the oly Father said,... also wish to express my gratitude for the unfailing support which your rder has always given to the works of the oly ee. his support finds particular expression in the icarius hristi Fund, which is an eloquent sign of your solidarity with the uccessor of eter in his concern for the niversal hurch, but it is also seen in the daily prayers, sacrifices and apostolic works of so many Knights in their local ouncils, their parishes and their communities. he oly Father is not only keenly aware of the great works of the rder in the grand scheme, but it is clear that he is aware of each member and the loving work that each of us does in service of those that Jesus called the least of his brothers. et us, Brother Knights, remain vigilant and prove to our oly Father that his faith in us is not misplaced and his personal recognition of our labour is not unfounded. o that end, 2014 has continued our tradition of great years of success in delivering our Fraternal harity to the periphery of society, to the most needy in our world. ndividually, or in groups, we have fed the hungry by working with food banks and soup kitchens; clothed the naked with oats for Kids and other programs; visited the imprisoned and the sick through our support of prison and hospital ministries; and defended the weak and lifted up the downtrodden through our various ulture of ife initiatives. here is, indeed, a lot happening in our local ouncils and at the tate ouncil level and we have much to be proud of. ur membership numbers are continuing to turn around but to satisfy the immense need for charity in our world, we need even more labourers. he recent District Deputy id-year meeting focused on accountability. ach of us who serve as leaders of our ouncils has accepted with our role the responsibility to dedicate the necessary time to the fulfillment of our duties. his pledge isn t that we will dedicate a modicum of time, or some fraction of our spare time, but rather, whatever time is necessary to properly discharge our responsibilities. rimary among our responsibility is to be faithful stewards of the legacy of our rder and the future of our hurch. We need to take this commitment seriously and make sure that we are doing everything possible to grow our rder so that we can perform even more works of harity that will aid even more needy brothers and sisters. t this time, would like to offer the gratitude of the entire jurisdiction to our tate haplain, ost everend Ken owakowski for his continued prayers and guidance. Bishop Ken has authored the theme for our upcoming and it is, But e said to them, "ou give them something to eat." (k: 9:13). his passage is from the beginning of the story describing the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. he quote and the story fit into our lives as Knights of olumbus on so many levels. Firstly, it is an admonition from hrist to his disciples to not despair that we sometimes feel inadequate or poorly equipped to meet the tremendous needs of society. What a wonderful command to keep in mind as we prepare our plentiful hristmas dinners to contribute to the food hampers and our local food banks. n another level, this quote is the opening to a story that demonstrates how od s grace can multiply our limited human resources to provide greater abundance than we can imagine. his story urges us to continue providing what we can in the confidence that od will multiply it according to is will. third level that this quote touches for us as Knights of olumbus is to remind us that it us up to each of us to take personal responsibility for providing charity to the less fortunate. hrist has commanded his disciples, and by extension, us, to personally go out and give the masses something to eat. suppose the real question is, did e mean to literally go out and provide food, or was this in anticipation of the ucharist and a command to take im to the periphery of society so that all may believe and be saved? reparations are underway for our nnual eneral eeting and onvention this coming pril. he dates for this year s meetings are pril 24 to 26, his year s meeting is promising to be another great meeting. We have heard the comments in the recent past about the escalating costs of the weekend and we worked very hard to reduce the costs last year. am pleased to report that we were able to cover the costs of the onvention with other cost cutting measures of the tate fficers and the registration cost for this year will be unchanged from last year. verall, the nnual eneral eeting is a pretty good value for our ouncils. he net cost to each ouncil for their first delegate is only $260! urge all ouncils to send at least one delegate to the nnual eneral eeting. his weekend is when we transact the important business of the tate ouncil at this single meeting each year. For those who are constantly worried about lower meeting attendance at your local ouncil level, please understand that am equally worried about dwindling attendance at this meeting too. lease keep in mind that this is the only meeting of the tate ouncil all year, so would really like to see those same rand Knights who commented that they would like to see greater membership at their meetings attend this single meeting. urge all of the rand Knights to register and not be the cause of lower meeting attendance. would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of both andra and myself to wish you and your families a Joy-filled dvent, a most Blessed hristmas and a appy, ealthy and rosperous ew ear. Whatever our situation, let us remember those less fortunate than us. n celebrating the Feast of the ativity we welcome the newly-born hrist child into our hearts and into our homes. Jesus, the incarnate Word of od, came into the world in the most humble of ways, born to a poor couple in a lowly place where livestock were sheltered. e was greeted by shepherds, men who lived a lonely life on the fringes of society. his ten2 in need of mercy, is the all-merciful od who der Babe who took on human frailty and was invites us to find ways of being merciful to0 others: to our spouses, children, grandchildren, relatives, neighbors and, yes, especially strangers! 1 4 ur Worthy tate Deputy, Brother dward hawchuk, asked me to select a theme for our 2015 tate onvention several days ago. lthough in December it is a bit early to be thinking about our next tate onvention, nevertheless, want to share it with you: But e said to them, "ou give them something to eat." his theme is very much in keeping with our theme for this fraternal year. By choosing it, want us to continue to seek ways of being men of mercy. n this time of joyful celebration want to assure you, dear Brothers, of my own prayerful best wishes for you and your families, and ask our ord to bless you with many graces in the ew ear! hrist is Born! lorify im! + Ken owakowski tate haplain British olumbia & ukon tate ouncil Knights of olumbus Blessed re he erciful he meeting of the coordinators of orth merica and ustralia for the pastoral program the "ibrant arish a place to encounter the living hrist", was held in dmonton at the krainian atholic Basilian ouse of tudies. he meeting was chaired by ost everend Ken owakowski, Bishop of ew Westminster, British olumbia, anada, and ead of the mplementation team and assisted by ost ev.
