We had a fantastic trip home and that continued on into the onvention week as well. lease note too that your regon Delegation represented regon with the utmost dignity and professionalism. here were several very notable moments that our delegation would stand, cheer and be proud of all the accomplishments of the regon Knights. hank You to at and indy ice, id and Lisa hiel, Francis and ay ohr, George and Karen urphy, Kent and Debora urdy, tan ored and his daughter ngela for all the hard work and the dedication that week. upreme keeps us moving and on task - but you all made it fun for me as well. hank You. Being in hiladelphia made the theme for the onvention that much more appropriate, ndowed by their reator with Life and Liberty. his theme was driven home over and over again. t needed to be too. here are many forms of hristian persecution happening in this county and in other countries around the world. hese aren t reports of what might happen. t is not made up fables. t really is happening and it s happening in our lifetime, Brothers. he reality of this was reinforced by the emotional presentations from the ost ev. Bashar atti Warda, rchbishop of rbil, raq and the ost ev. Jean-lement Jeanbart, rchbishop of leppo, yria. he reports from both these rchbishops paint a pretty bleak future for hristians in the iddle ast. ere in the nited tates, we aren t being beheaded for our faith but there are those that are trying their hardest to shut us down and keep us out of the public square. s Knights of olumbus, our history shows that we are not a Fraternal group of men that cowers back and sits in the dark wondering what will happen next. ur rder s istory shows that we don t wait for others to fix these problems; we get involved and fix them. 3 Vol. 112 o. 2 age 3 L tate haplain Fr. heo Lange Dear Brothers, t has been a summer to remember as the Lord continues to guide us and form us into who we are in hrist Jesus ur Lord. here is a great mission Jesus has entrusted to us as Knights of olumbus. his mission is vital and important for the future of the hurch and the culture. hope that you are drawing closer to the acred eart of Jesus by living: harity, Fraternity, nity and atriotism. he theme of this year is We are is hands. s reflect on this, my heart is stirred by thinking of all the ways that we are revealing the love and the mercy of the Father to the world through who we are and are becoming, through our service, and through our mission as Knights. What a gift and privilege we have to be the sons of God, to be loved by God, to be forgiven by God, to be called by God and to be chosen by God to be Knights. pray that you experience a call to conversion by being a Knight of olumbus and you feel the urgency of inviting other men into a life changing encounter with Jesus hrist. he reason why God gave the hurch and the world the Knights of olumbus is because he loves each of us and we are called, as Brother Knights of olumbus, to be witnesses to truth and love in a world broken by lies, confusion and hatred. nward Brothers! lways forward! t is for the Glory of our God, the salvation of the world and the good of our venerable rder. lease take some time to pray in your ouncils and see your ouncil as a way to evangelize. Living in service to all is one of the most dynamic qualities of being a Knight of olumbus. unique way for Knights to serve is by offering their assistance in parishes that do not have a Knights of olumbus ouncil. ot only does this demonstrate to the parish priest that we are n olidarity With ur riest but it proves to this priest that we are true to our word, if he knows about the Knights and if he does not, it instills in him the difference a Knights of olumbus ouncil can make if he had one within his parish. his is a two way street and a win-win situation for the Knights of olumbus. his makes the Knights of olumbus a visible talent and an asset in the parish and community and instills in that parish priest the importance in having his own Knights of olumbus ouncil within his parish. e, in turn, will instill in the men in his parish the importance of being a Knight of olumbus and as a result, our rder will grow and regon will continue to increase its membership. he rder requests ouncil members to extend services to such parishes. he arish ound able rogram is an easy and effective way for Knights to better serve the individual parishes, priests and to be the visible force for good in their communities. he ound able representatives are members of the sponsoring ouncil and are members of that parish with one of those members serving as the arish ound able oordinator. n situations where ound ables have been successful and membership is growing, the ost ouncil, District Deputy and ew ouncil Development team should be evaluating the ability of the ound able to grow into a full-fledged ouncil. ound ables may also be effectively utilized to establish a presence in sub-communities of a large single parish ouncil, perhaps with a significant ispanic community or other nationality. he guidelines to establish a arish ound able are: Grand Knight decides which of the local area parishes will be served. Grand Knight and his fficers make lists of ouncil members who belong to those parishes. (ontinued next page)

19 Vol. 112 o. 2 age 19 Dear Brother Knights, upreme Knight arl nderson he Knights of olumbus is committed to assisting our hristian brothers and sisters who are suffering in the iddle ast. t this year s upreme onvention, announced a eason of ruth dedicated to raising awareness of their plight, and the plight of other religious minorities in the region. K G L he violence in the iddle ast has led to many deaths and the greatest refugee crisis since WW. ver four million people have been displaced. mong the most affected are raqi and yrian hristians, who are the victims of ongoing systematic cleansing and persecution. While the hristian population in raq once numbered above a million, violence has reduced that number by more than 65%. his human catastrophe has drawn commentary from ope Francis, who said this of the persecution: oday we are dismayed to see how in the iddle ast and elsewhere in the world many of our brothers and sisters are persecuted, tortured and killed for their faith in Jesus. n this third world war, waged piecemeal, a form of genocide is taking place. s Knights of olumbus we cannot be part of what ope Francis has called the complicit silence of many who hear of these atrocities and do nothing. We must act. o date, we have donated more than $4 million to relief efforts in raq and yria through the Knights of olumbus hristian efugee elief Fund. Your ouncil may have been inspired by Building the Domestic hurch, a program published by the Knights of olumbus eadquarters last summer. n Building the Domestic hurch, upreme Knight arl nderson stresses the importance of fostering a sense of church community through the actions and initiatives of the atholic family. he program provides examples of unique ways to coordinate volunteer activities, fundraisers, and Family ovie ights in order to bring ouncils and families together for the strengthening of our faith. s the result of this national effort, many ouncils have begun to sponsor family movie nights. t may be surprising to think that something as innocuous as playing a family friendly film for ouncil members could be cause for concern. ome of our members may be surprised to learn that copyrighted movies and other audiovisual programs that are available for rental or purchase in any legal format, such as DVDs or other digital formats, whether streamed or downloaded, are intended for personal, private use only. howing movies in a church, ouncil hall, or clubhouse requires a public performance license in accordance with the.. opyright ct. his legal requirement applies equally to both for-profit and non-profit organizations even if no admission fee is charged and the screening is not open to the general public. ome ouncils are already familiar with the otion icture Licensing orporation (L). s stated in Building the Domestic hurch, the L issues the special license required to legally show copyrighted movies for Family ovie ight events. Fans for the ure is a organization with the goal to raise awareness about rostate ancer, with D Kast having been a survivor and losing his dad to it, it really hit close to home with him. t was amazing to hear the different stories from people how they're either dealing with prostate cancer now or have overcome it in the past. ome folks have had it multiple times. ven though the Volcanoes lost the game it was still a fun time out there, as was blessed with the company of my lovely wife ophie and our handsome little boy David. V W n rticle from upreme onvention 2015 By: tate reasurer Francis ohr Letter from ope Francis to Knights of olumbus Letter was presented, in person, by ietro ardinal arolin, ecretariat of tate (he following are comments from his letter) s prepare to visit hiladelphia next month for the 8 th World eeting of Families, express my deep appreciation for the steadfast public witness your rder has borne to our hristian understanding of marriage and the family. oday, when the institution of marriage is under attack from powerful cultural forces, the faithful are called to bear witness to this basic truth of biblical faith and natural law. trust that the theme of this year s upreme onvention --- ndowed by their reator with Life and Liberty --- will draw attention to the duty of merican atholics, precisely as responsible citizens to contribute to the reasoned defense of those freedoms on which their nation was founded. he cornerstone of these is religious freedom, understood not simply as the liberty to worship as one chooses, but also, for individuals and institutions to speak and act in accordance with the dictates of their conscience. o the extent that this right is menaced, whether by invasive public policies, or by the growing influence of a culture which sets alleged personal rights above the common good, there is need for a mobilization of consciences on the part of all those citizens who, regardless of party, of creed, are concerned for the overall welfare of society. hope that the program of catechesis and prayer which the Knights have inaugurated with their Domestic hurch rogram for parishes and the forthcoming ynod on Family and the World eeting of Families will contribute significantly to this prophetic witness.

28 V \ Vol. 112 o. 2 age 28 Knights of olumbus K upreme onvention eport Francis ohr, 2015 upreme onvention Delegate he location for the Knights of olumbus upreme onvention in hiladelphia was very appropriate for this year s onvention heme. hiladelphia, a city full of historic sites related to the evolutionary rmy, buildings where our founding fathers gathered, discussed and eventually adopted the basic foundation of our nation. eferences to basic values contained in the Declaration of ndependence and onstitution were echoed throughout the week by our upreme Knight arl nderson, further strengthened in the letter from ope Francis, addressed in the homily from the kranium atholic Bishop and mentioned several times thereafter. From the beginning, the message for the Knights of olumbus in merica was obvious; there was no hidden agenda! he Knights of olumbus need to rise to the challenges facing religious liberty and definition of life in our nation. upreme Knight arl nderson recalled an important action that occurred during those earlier historic meetings in hiladelphia: homas Jefferson, who authored the first Declaration of ndependence draft, wrote: We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable. But it was a hiladelphian, Benjamin Franklin, who with one edit made one of the most significant contributions. e struck out the words sacred and undeniable and replaced them with a single word: self-evident. upreme Knight nderson further expounded: With a stroke of the pen, Franklin shifted the entire foundation of the Declaration from a religious doctrine and a matter of faith to that of reason and the universal nature of the human person. ighty-seven years later, resident braham Lincoln, overlooking the fields of Gettysburg, recalled how a new nation, conceived in liberty was struggling to defend the principles contained in the Declaration of ndependence. e further added that this nation, under God, would have a new birth of freedom. resident Lincoln defended merica s founding principles to secure the future. nd so, a century later, another president began his inaugural address recalling the cause for which our forebears fought --- the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God. resident Kennedy continued that we dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let me further announce to friend and foe alike, that this generation of mericans were unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this ation has always been committed. nd so, my Brother Knights, in that same spirit and with the same determination, announce the theme of this 133 rd upreme onvention: ndowed by their reator with Life and Liberty. s you might anticipate, this resulted in a standing ovation by the delegation and thus, a symbol that we are united. t was a stimulating onvention. t was impossible to leave the onvention week without feeling revitalized to do something! he message was clear. Be not afraid to evangelize our basic human and atholic moral values of life. he message was well presented. t was not presented as a scare but as a reality that once again public opinion and/or a governing body raised its head to challenge the basic values of human life, marriage and religious liberty. t s happening on our home soil. regon was not just a participant at the convention. wice regon was among the few recognized for outstanding achievements and membership accomplishment. wice, tate Deputy Bob Kish and wife, ue stepped up the stage to receive an award for the tate from upreme Knight arl nderson. nother great gesture was that tate Deputy Bob Kish was asked by upreme Knight nderson to chair a committee to write a letter to ope Francis. tate Deputy Bob was asked to read this letter to the delegation. Besides expressing our support to the oly Father and the hurch, it included our sincere welcome to the for the World onference of Families to be held in hiladelphia this fall. he con of the oly Family, blessed by ope Francis, was presented to each tate Deputy which was part of the procession at the opening ass of the onvention. he con will travel throughout the entire tate of regon this next year. he con is the same photo used with the Domestic hurch rogram. ll councils are encouraged to participate when the con is scheduled for their area. ince our return flight to regon was later in the afternoon or the next day, our tate haplain Fr. heo made connections with a priest he knew at the Basilica. We gathered for our own morning ass at one of the side altars at the Basilica of t. eter and t. aul in hiladelphia. What a blessed closure memory for this year s trip to the K upreme onvention.

29 Vol. 112 o. 2 age 29 Knights of olumbus G L July 1, 2015 regon Baptism in rogram G B What is the purpose of this program? t is to recognize a new life and to thank the family, especially the other for bringing this new life into the world and our oly atholic hurch. Who should receive the pin and card? he baptism pin and related card is to be given to a new other of the newly baptized baby at your church. t is also recommended that a single red rose accompany the pin and card as well. (hese pins are meant for general any distribution to the membership. t no time should a Brother Knight ever be seen wearing one of these pins. his is not the intention of this program). Who should give this gift of appreciation? ny member of the ouncil can present these items to the new other. lease be sure to inform the family that his is a gift to the other from the local Knights of olumbus ouncil. When should this gift be given? hese should be given immediately before or after the Baptism ass. Do not mail them. Do not have a 3 rd party give them away. lease make this a personal presentation to the other from a Knight in good standing. ow many pins does a ouncil receive? nitially, each ouncil will receive 10 pins and 10 cards. dditional pins and cards can be requested from the tate ro-life Director or the tate Deputy. hese pins are free to regon ouncils. t is suggested that the ouncil ro-life Director or the Financial ecretary be the keeper of the pins and cards and only disperse them to the membership as requested for a Baptism. lease note that these are only guidelines. f a ouncil wishes to make this into a bigger presentation and/or change it up a bit, then that is fine.
