5 2 t. Francis was born in the tiny village of aola, taly, around His parents were poor but humble and holy. hey had prayed to t. Francis of ssisi for a son. When he was born, they named him after the saint. he boy went to a school taught by the Franciscan priests. here he learned to read. When he was fifteen, with his parents permission, he went to live in a cave. He wanted to be a hermit and spend his life for od alone. When he was twenty, other young men joined him.. Francis left his cave. he people of aola built a church and monastery for him and his followers. He called his new religious order the inims. inims means the least of all. veryone loved t. Francis. He prayed for them and worked many miracles. He told his followers that they must be kind and humble, and do much penance. He himself was the best example of the virtues he preached. nce someone visited the saint and insulted him to his face. When the man was finished, Francis did something unusual. He quietly pick up some hot coals from the fireplace and closed his hands tightly around them. ut he was not burned at all. ome, warn yourself, he said to his accuser kindly. You are shivering because you need a little charity. t such a miracle, the visitor changed his mind about Francis. From then on, he admired him greatly. King ouis X of Frances had not lived a very good life. He called for t. Francis when he was dying. ust the thought of dying made the King terrified. He wanted Francis work a miracle to cure him. nstead, the saint gently helped the frightened man to prepare well to die a holy death. he king had a chance of heart. He accepted od s will and died quietly in the arms of the saint. t. Francis lived a long life praising and loving od. He died on ood Friday in 1507, at the age of ninety-one. y eflection ometimes we can get so wrapped up in loud music, television shows, videos, and computer games that we can find ourselves just living for now. We might not even give any thought or time for our souls that will live on in eternity. 9 esus teaching about prayer and love for even the least of od s children caused many to follow Him. He was honored by the people but He knew some would not accept Him. esus had come to erusalem to celebrate the assover meal with His friends. He shared the first ucharist with them and taught a very special lesson of service and caring. ach ood Friday we remember esus death on a cross. We gather as a family and honor the cross because our faith teaches that it truly is the tree of salvation which brings us new life. he promise of new life is celebrated with baptisms at aster. t the aster Vigil new members of the hristian family are baptized and receive a white robe symbolic of their new life in hrist.

13 23 ictures of aint eorge usually show him killing a dragon to rescue a beautiful lady. he dragon stands for wickedness. he lady stands for od s holy truth. aint eorge is slaying the dragon because he has won the battle against the devil. ot much is known about aint eorge except that he was a martyr. He was a soldier un the army of iocletian, a pagan emperor. iocletian was a bitter enemy of the hristians. n fact, he put to death every hristian he could find. t is believed that aint eorge was one of iocletian s favorites soldiers. When eorge become a hristian, he went to the emperor and scolded him for being so cruel. hen he gave up his position in the oman army. t. eorge paid a very high price for his bravery. He was cruelly tortured and beheaded. o boldly daring and so cheerful was t. eorge in declaring his faith that people felt courage when they heard about it. any songs and poems were written about this martyr. oldiers, especially, have always been devoted to him. He was named the patron of ngland in t eorge was killed in ydda, alestine, around the 303. We all have some dragon we have to conquer. t might be selfishness or anger. t might be laziness or greed, or something else. We can ask t. eorge to help us fight against these dragons. We can think of him also when we can t get along with people even if we want to. t those difficult moments, we can ask t. ark to show us his secret for patching up differences.
