N ursery care is offered at 10:00 am for infants. Sound is piped into M emorial H all next door to the Sanctuary for those who would welcome a space apart. Worship C lipboards: Worship clipboards with age-appropriate bulletins and coloring paper are available in the back of the Sanctuary for our elementary aged children as a support to their attendance in worship. We hope you will find these clipboards a welcoming and supportive means of engaging your children during the worship service. There is ample free street parking on the blocks around our church on Sundays, as well as in the lots behind the C atholic diocese building. For those able to walk a short distance, parking here will allow those with mobility impairments or small children to use the spots directly in front of the church. M usic N otes for February 19, 2017 We are pleased to have the Plymouth Bells playing for us today. There is a centuries-old tradition of change bell ringing in E ngland. This consists of playing a set of bells in every possible order: if there are two bells, one is limited to 1-2 or 2-1. With three bells, you can play 1-2-3, 1-3-2, 2-1-3, 2-3-1, 3-1-2, With four bells, there are 24 possibilities. The 10 variations that comprise the familiar Westminster C himes were first played on the bells at St. M ary the G reat in C ambridge E ngland in From there, this sequence was adopted for use at the Palace at Westminster (which is where the famous Big Ben bell hangs.) It is interesting to note that both the Big Ben bell and our own set of handbells were cast by Whitechapel Foundries. Whitechapel is the oldest business in London (450 years old), and has been housed in the same building for the past 250 years. Sadly, they recently announced that they will be closing in M ay 2017 unless a new buyer can be found who could continue the business at a new location. O ur prelude is based on the famous Westminster C himes. O ur anthem, by J ames Rogers ( ), uses a text from I J ohn 4: which relates closely to our scripture reading today: Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and God s love is perfected in us. 4
5 O ur offertory anthem was arranged by our own J ames Vedder, who plays with the Plymouth Bells, and also sings in the choir. This arrangement of Scarlet Ribbons was done for the Plymouth Bells, and soprano M aria Whitcomb: I peeped in to say good night, and I heard my child in prayer, "Ooh for me some scarlet ribbons, scarlet ribbons for my hair." All the stores were closed and shuttered; all the streets were dark and bare. In my town no scarlet ribbons - not one ribbon for her hair. Through the night my heart was aching, just before the dawn was breaking I peeped in and on her bed, in gay profusion lying there Lovely ribbons, scarlet ribbons, scarlet ribbons for her hair If I live to be a hundred, I shall never know from where Came those lovely scarlet ribbons, scarlet ribbons for her hair. Louis-N icolas C lerambault ( ) was a Parisian organist and composer who wrote a large number of religious works, secular cantatas (based mostly on G reek mythology) and works for organ, harpsichord and violin. O ur postlude is from his second suite for organ. O ne critic notes that in these suites, melodic charm wins out over religious spirit. About Plymouth Plymouth was founded in 1853 by a group of Syracusans who wanted to create a C hristian abolitionist bulwark in the city. Since then, we have fought against slavery, poverty, and war; for immigrants, natives, workers, L G BT, and women s rights; and sought to be agents of mercy in a hurting world. We believe G od speaks new meanings for new days, and that S he does so not only in the church and the ancient words of the Bible, but through the insights of science, the arts, the revelations of other religions, and the best strivings of the human spirit.
