6 District News III Hello from Lions Camp Badger! June is crunch time here at the camp and by the time you are reading this, we will be in full-on summer camp mode. Session One for campers ages begins on July 2 through July 14, and Session Two for campers ages begins on July 16 through July 28. We are already adding names to our mailing list for next summer. For staffing, we will have one Assistant Director; two Health Directors over the 4 weeks of camp being assisted by a part-time LPN; one Aquatics Director who will be assisting as a counselor when not at the pool; plus eleven counselors, some of whom will be acting as 1:1 aides as needed. Oh, and we can t forget the Camp Cook! Also this year, we will have 5 or 6 student volunteers during the day. The staff will be participating in several days of training before camp including participating in a workshop from the Department of Health on tick-borne illnesses and disease prevention, and attending a fishing clinic sponsored by the Department of Environmental Conservation. The DEC is bringing free fishing poles and other equipment to use with our campers. Pat Gillule, our Camp Director, has been working hard on programming and scheduling, and several special events are planned and confirmed. She has secured participation in the NYS Summer Food Service Program for Session One, which will provide Breakfast, Lunch, and Snacks for campers and student volunteers. This will provide significant savings for us, but since most of the food that the program offers is prepackaged, processed foods, we plan to supplement with fresh ingredients whenever possible. Our campers will assist with salad bar preparation and making their own snacks. Don t forget to like our page Lions Camp Badger on Facebook for regular updates on what s happening here at camp. Also, mark your calendars for our annual Lions Appreciation Day on Sunday, July 30th. It s a day that we hold every year to celebrate and show appreciation for you, as Lions, and others who support this beautiful camp and help us to continue our mission. It s also a good time to show you what camp is all about and all the great things that are happening here. The day begins with a brief memorial service in our beautiful Chapel at 10:00 am and dedication of any new memorial pavers in our Chapel gardens. Then we head to our Collins Conroy Lodge to show off the new addition to the building; for introductions of the new Council of Governors and our Board of Directors & staff; recognitions; camp slideshow presentation; and best of all, our Chicken BBQ luncheon. If you are thinking about attending, just make a quick phone call or send an to Cynthia in the office with a head count, so we can plan on how much food to make! or lionscampbadger@htva.net. 9 Club News III Pal Mac Lions Gearing up for the summer months the Pal-Mac Lions Club held its annual picnic on June 20th at Lion President, Kathi Woodlock s Home, Lions and spouses and guests had lots of food and fun. Let s take this year in review as we work up to our new election of officers. The Palmyra-Macedon Lions club does eyesight screening for children, funds for the Food pantries, donations and assistance to Green Angels, Lions International, eye tests, eye glasses, and hearing aids. Celebrating its almost 60 years of service to the communities of Palmyra and Macedon through food baskets and delivery, Camp Badger (a week camp for those with sight impairment and a new program for veterans), assistance to Historic Palmyra, Route 31 road cleanup 4 times per year, and of course, the Red Kettle Campaign held each year in December at Walmart in Macedon. We head up the Easter Egg Hunt in the Village Park, the Halloween Costume Parade at the Palmyra- Macedon Primary School each year. We collect old and used eye glasses at multiple sites each month and send them to be reused in countries who need them. The Pal- Mac Lions Club takes care of the flags at the Port of Palmyra s Vietnam Memorial. Helping hands are very willing and ready to serve, our motto, We Serve holds true. Guiding eye dogs is one of our specialties and we assist with funding of training. The Pal-Mac Lions Club meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from September to June at the Alling Coverlet Museum, 122 William Street, Palmyra NY, followed by an annual picnic with awards. New President, Kathi Woodlock, has many ideas, and programs for the upcoming year. Come join us at your first meeting as our guest and see what we are all about. On June 6th, 2017 the Pal-Mac Lions Club installed their new officers and chairpersons. Penn Yan Lions The Penn Yan Lions Club of Penn Yan, New York took on a Special Needs Playground for their Legacy Project to celebrate 100 years of Lions Service. Lions was founded by Melvin Jones, in Chicago, 100 years ago and serves the needs of people worldwide. The new playground was installed at Red Jacket Park on Keuka Lake May 12 and 13. The total cost of the project was $ 70, and funding was possible by the following: Penn Yan Lions Club, Lions Clubs International Foundation, New York State & Bermuda Lions Foundation, Brandel/ Murphy Youth Foundation, District 20E2 Special Projects Fund and very special support from the Penn Yan Elks Lodge #1722. A total of 70 Lions and community volunteers built the playground in two days amassing over 980 Lions Hours. The build was supported by the village and many local businesses for which the Lions are very, very thankful. The new playground replaces one built by the Lions in 1988 and will serve thousands of children over its life time. The Penn Yan Lions participated in the July 4th Branchport Parade passing out 1,000 American Flags. Pictured are a group shot of the Lions and grandchildren who helped pass out flags, newly inducted King Lion Taylor Fitch with Grandson Charlie and the Lion's wagon with grandchildren helping on an absolutely gorgeous day. Sodus Lions, Bill Hontz, Dave Lewis, Lioness, Sharon Maher, and her Husband, Jim, volunteered to help make this first ever New York State event an experience that the VIP s raved about throughout the day. We were joined by Pal-Mac Lions President, Terry Goodwin, to make it a truly strong Wayne County Lion/Lioness experience. Lion Ron Koniz has been promoting this throughout New York and used his preserve to launch the successful, enriching day. For this event the participants will have an opportunity to travel to North Carolina in October to enter in the National Championships The next Saturday, June 10 Sodus Lioness traipsed off to Camp Badger south of Ithaca for the Officer training session in the morning and then our yearly Chapel garden restoration and clean-up. Jean Minkau accompanied, President, Sharon Maher, to the training at 9:00. Darcy Davidson, Kay Baker, and our own Master Gardener, Audrey Ferris joined us at 11:00, after an adventurous roadtrip ready to work. We had an amazing lunch cooked by Donna Mistler, then off to 4 hours of weeding, laughing, planting, sweating, fertilizing, more laughing, watering, and strategizing on how to keep the cute, voracious deer from eating it all. Our Club closed out the spring session with a steak roast at the Holfield Rod and Gun Club in Bloomfield on June 21. There were 40 in attendance including members and guests. 11 Club News V Spencer Candor Lions Seymour Maltese Fishing Derby Fun for All: The annual Seymour Maltese Fishing Derby was Saturday, June 17. The fishing derby is intended for children in the Candor and Spencer-Van Etten school districts. One after the other, throughout the morning the kids proudly filed up to the judges table with flopping live fish to be measured. Prizes were awarded to each child through a lottery drawing and bigger prizes (trophy, fishing poles, and tackle boxes) were awarded to the top fishermen in three age groups and four categories. Once the awards were presented, kids walked across the street with family members to the Parkview Pizzeria for a free slice of pizza donated by Parkview Pizzeria. It was wonderful to see kids, parents, and other adults interacting throughout the morning while connecting with nature. President Donna Mistler and Ann Weber attended the Candor High School Awards Night and presented the Richard Weber Award in memory of Richard Weber. Richard was a charter member of the Lions Club and one of the original founders of the Spencer Candor Lions Club. The award was presented to Sierra Bartolis and she will be attending Corning Community College majoring in nursing. President Donna Mistler and Carol Maltese attended the Spencer-Van Etten High School Awards Night to present the Seymour Maltese Award in memory of Seymour Maltese. Seymour Maltese was also a charter member of the Lions Club and had a heart of gold. The award was presented to Arrianna Megivern and she will be attending the Elmira College School of Nursing. In closing, members also planted flowers this month beneath the Village of Spencer signs and trimmed the tree branches surrounding the Lions Club signs so they are more visible to the public. Union Springs Lions About 70 people attended our 60th Anniversary at Yawger Brook. While the Community Band played, we enjoyed a wonderful meal followed by the presentation of our annual awards, the Installation of New Officers, the Induction of 3 new members, and checks given to Mayor Shattuck and Deputy Mayor Marion Case.
