2 A Message From Your Council President Hello Trinity Family, Last night, Monday, January 21st, I went to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. La Crosse Area Community Celebration at Viterbo with my son Colby. We went to show our support for a good friend of Colby s, and mine, who was receiving a prestigious award during the presentation. Chariell received the Inaugural Lynda Lowerey Youth Leadership Award for her efforts to help other girls and boys resolve conflicts of many kinds, in different ways. And also for her work as a fierce proponent of social justice. Colby has known Chariell since pre-school through wrestling at The Boys and Girls Club, Logan Middle School, and now Logan High School. They are good friends who understand each other, and respect each other. It is a good friendship. The part of their friendship I enjoy watching the most is how they feed off of each other when wrestling in practice, or in a tournament. Over the years they have helped each other learn and refine wrestling moves, deal with wins and losses, and how to deal with other wrestlers. Some wrestlers may not be the best winners or losers. It can be difficult dealing with those situations. But, they both help each other out. During the keynote speaker I really noticed something he said during his speech. He was talking about his experiences during the civil rights movement in the 60 s, and made a comment that we all need to open our hearts to each other. That stuck with me. The rest of his speech centered around those three words in my head. He gave many examples of this idea, even if he didn t intentionally mean to. It was still in my head. And at the end of his speech he passed his torch to Chariell and the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award. And in doing so, he opened his heart to them. It was a good night. So now you are wondering where I am going with this. Let me tell you Who do we all know that opened their heart to all of us? Who gave up everything to make sure we lived for a purpose? Who tried to teach us to love and do the right thing, even when it may cost us dearly? Throughout his life, Jesus was always trying to help us understand what God wanted of us. Giving to the poor, caring for the sick, sharing with our neighbor, loving our fellow man. Many times it would be about us opening our hearts to someone else. And in doing so, not only helping them, but also learning something about ourselves. Funny how that works. You help someone else and you are the one who learns. Has that ever happened to you? It has to me. Just last night in fact. By going to the celebration to support Chariell I learned things that I hope I never forget. I heard stories of our history that I would like to erase. But, if I could do that, we would not have those experiences to learn from. We need to remember our nations history, good and bad, so we try and keep the bad things from happening once more. We need to open our hearts to our 2
3 fellow man no matter what their religion, race, ethnicity, gender, or opinion. We will not always agree with everyone, but at least we need to listen like Jesus did. We need to remember the stories of the Bible and about the torture Jesus endured for us. Faith, Hope, and Love are three teachings of Jesus. Please live by these teachings and show your fellow man respect. Doing this and helping each other out will bring us friendships and understanding. And with understanding comes acceptance. Jesus will like that. Child of God, Todd A. Olson The season of Lent is a time of preparation for Trinity s the celebration Lent of and the Resurrection Easter Liturgy March of our 6th through April 21st Lord on Easter. In the early church, it was a time of personal preparation for people who were becoming members of the church by baptism on the Vigil of Easter. It has for us today become a time in which we consider our relationship with Jesus and what it means to be a disciple in our present world. Our Saturday and Sunday services will continue to be centered on the traditional text for Sundays in Lent. But we will have special mid-week services which will focus on our role as disciples of Jesus. The mid-week services will be on Wednesdays at 6:3pm beginning March 6th. The only mid-week service that will not be on Wednesday is the Maundy Thursday service during Holy Week. The theme of our mid-week services will be what we can learn from five different characters that were a part of the ministry of Jesus in His time. The services will consist of Holden Prayer and a dramatization of the five characters, followed by an application for our life today. The Lent and Holy Week schedule is as follows: March 6th, 6:30pm Ash Wednesday a service of Holy Communion with the Imposition of Ashes March 13th-April 10th, 6:30pm The Five Characters April Palm Sunday What Jesus was saying during His entrance to Jerusalem April 18th, 6:30pm Maundy Thursday a service of Holy Communion commemorating when Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples in the Upper Room April 20th Saturday no service April 21st Easter Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord 6:30am Sunrise service 8:30am Festival service 3

Teaming with The Teen Closet folks from Onalaska First Lutheran has been very successful. Area teens needing clothing have found their way to Trinity and our Onalaska First Lutheran Friends have been there to help them out. Thank you friends. Over 700 youth have entered Trinity s door since August seeking clothing. When our clothing inventory became low in December our Onalaska friends put a shout out to their congregation and filled our closet with not only used clothes but many new outfits as well. We are blessed. In addition Scott, our custodian, and his daughter, Jacey, have started a toy closet. They have created 2 new rooms of donated and new toys for our youth that visit on Mondays. It has been a hit. Thank you to Scott and Jacey! We look forward to working with all our new friends in We know God said to feed the hungry and clothe the poor. I wonder if He also thought a few toys would be nice too? Trinity Singers Thank you to the Trinity family for the support of the Trinity Singers!!
