1 Lions District 20-E2 The Finger Lakes District August 2003 District Governor Newsletter Frank Muccini District Governor s Message Community Service Lions, Lioness, and Leos It has been a fast paced June/July. Classes and seminars were the order of the day for District Governors at the Denver International Convention. The theme of the new International President, Dr. Tae-Sup Lee is Innovation, gateway to the future. All of you have heard the old statement we have always done it that way. Dr Lee is stressing that we as lions become more creative in what we do to serve our communities. If we continue to do the same things year after year, we become stale and do not bring excitement and fun to Lionism. This does not mean that all community projects should be changed, only that a review should be made of what the Community needs are today, and what we as Lions, Lioness and Leos are doing to meet those needs. Innovative new programs and equipment may be to much for one club, but working together we can achieve any goal. One of the new devices mentioned was the photo eye screening camera. One of my goals this year is to have over 4000 children screened within the District. This means that every club should set up eye screening sessions for preschool children in their community. With over 50 clubs in the District, this goal should easily be attainable. Pre-K, Headstart programs, nursery schools, daycare centers, etc. are all places that children can be screened. I also visited a guide dog school. It was a strange experience to be blindfolded and have to rely on a dog to steer me around obstacles. Graduation was held for 15 of these highly trained dogs and the individuals they will serve. The graduates, some of whom had dogs before, will now have the whole world opened up to them. Some will go back to college, others will return to their jobs, while others will just be able to function in a society where they were limited. Experiences like this make you appreciate so much more what we have. The District directory and visitation schedule have been completed. I will be contacting clubs shortly to confirm my visitation. The first Cabinet meeting will be in Palmyra-Macedon on August 24 th, The Fall Conference will be at the Holiday Inn in Painted Post on November 8 th. There will be a President s Recognition lunch, seminars and presentations. International Director Dave Roberts will be the featured speaker. A block of rooms has been set aside for those wishing to stay over. Members from all clubs should plan to attend. I hope everyone is having a nice summer (in between rain days). Yours in Lionism, DG Frank Muccini Vice District Governor's Message Lions, Lioness and Leos. It was my pleasure to represent you at the Lions International Convention in Denver last month. It was a wonderful Lion experience. I was able to take pictures of the International parade showing Lions from all over the world, many in their native dress. I will be bringing an album, with these pictures, with me on my visit to your club. I hope you will enjoy looking at them. I know that many clubs do not formally meet during the summer yet are very active with projects. Keep up the great work! Please remember, "If you need me, I'll be there". Sounds like a song, don't you think? Please contact me anytime at work at or at home at Yours in Lionism, VDG Wayne Wagner First Cabinet Meeting Sunday, August 24, 2003 Palmyra Town Hall 1
2 A Polly Postscript In the last half of May, a petit bundle of energy, named Polly Letofsky, came walking through the fingers lakes in her Global Walk for raising awareness of breast cancer. As the Lions District Coordinator for her visit, we communicated frequently before she came to prepare her hosting clubs. Her stay in our region was a huge success by any measure. Her following edited thoughts speak for themselves. Editors note: Bob is the name of her pushing tricycle in which she transports her belongings. May 30, 2003 I Heart New York. NIAGARA FALLS, NY Bob and I were all packed up and ready to walk over the border to Canada a hundred yards away. I thanked everyone at the Internet café for donating computer time when one of the women asked me, "What's been your favorite place so far?" I said you wouldn't believe it if I told you. She said, "Come on, tell me." I said, "New York State." She retreated back a step: "Wow, you're right, I don't believe it." She looked perplexed trying to get her head around it and mumbled, "Why?" You've got everything here; The Catskill Mountains, the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, wineries, great food, the Erie Canal with those quaint little historic canal towns and old downtown Main Streets with one room movie cinemas. I told them when I walked over the border from Pennsylvania into New York at Corning someone pulled over and ran out to greet me with a big hug. I had to say, "I hope you're Frank with the Lions Club or New Yorkers are really friendly." I told them how I walked uphill for 21 miles in the pouring rain to little Watkins Glen at the foot of Seneca Lake. When I got there the Lions put me up at a cozy B&B, made me an honorary member and gave a VERY generous donation. When I walked up through the Finger Lakes towns of Hector, Lakemont, Valois, Lodi, Ovid, one farmer invited me in for lemonade and a tussle with the kitty, a retired New York City firefighter gave me a polo shirt with an embroidered picture of the Twin Towers, and one woman drove out just to give me jars of her fresh homemade apricot jam and almond butter. When I stopped for a break at a winery, the owner came out and gave me one of their t-shirts. One man and his wife drove out to treat me to lunch and gave me three Bibles -- pocket size, large print and The New Testament in Modern English. I spoke at the Ovid Chamber of Commerce Wine and cheese doo, eight Lions Clubs, 15 newspaper and radio interviews, and four breast cancer groups. We raised over $2,000. When walking near Elmira I joined the 5-km Race for the Cure where Bob and I got last place due to an excessive amount of chatter. Afterwards there was a line of breast cancer survivors waiting to sign Bob, including a 75-year old woman who has had it twice --40 years ago. By now there was a small crowd of onlookers at the Internet cafe listening to my stories and how much I enjoyed walking through their state. They had that look on their faces that a lot of people get when there's a new view on the table. Do they think everyone is surrounded by mountains and lakes and wineries and charming historic unique little towns? I told them that I loved little Palmyra, the town that started Mormonism but is better known now for having four churches on one corner -- Episcopalian, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist. But there's also a Catholic church tucked behind the Episcopalian so it's really five. God knows that's unique. I told them about my good timing walking into Waterloo, the birthplace of Memorial Day, just on time for Memorial Day. I watched as all the townspeople hustled to get their town sparkled up for the weekend's tourists, raising flags and getting the town square decorated in red, white and blue for bands and bake sales. Everyone in Waterloo was very impressed that I had planned my walk so thoroughly as to be there for their big day. I wanted to tell them I had had no idea that Waterloo was the birthplace of Memorial Day but didn't want them to stop admiring my organizational skills. The folks at the Internet cafe were visibly taken aback. Or maybe that look on their blank faces means they've heard me and their brains are already spinning starting to plan their own travel across New York instead of bolting down to muggy Florida for the buy-6-nights-get-one-free package tour. Either way, Turkey, Thailand, England and Singapore round out the top five but New York State has moved to the top of the list. Polly P.S. A personal and very sincere thank you to Dan Motill from the Ovid Lions Club who single handedly organized my route, lodging, contacts and press that lead to the enormous and memorable success that New York State was for me. Miles of thanks, Dan! By now, she is well into Canada and may be back into the USA on her trip to her home in Boulder, Colorado. Our region is blest with having her visit. Dan Motill First Cabinet Meeting, Sunday, August 24, 2003, Palmyra Town Hall

Rushville Lions Club The Rushville Lions met at the Vine Valley Community Center on July 7th, some of our Lions were unable to attend as they were busy at a golf outing hosted by the Ovid Willard Lions. Our program was a presentation by a scout working on his Eagle Scout Project. He explained his project to the club and asked for some assistance in purchasing grills for the village park. As part of his project, he directed a cleanup of the village park and made some improvements. He hopes more children in the community will find the park more inviting. Lion Bill Williams joined King Lion on Thursday July 10th along with four of the Leos to hand out flyers door to door in the village.
