2 FROM THE DESK OF DISTRICT GOVERNOR LEWIS FIFIELD Well here we are only a few days away from Christmas. Jean and I had a very busy November month. We started off visiting Trepassey for an afternoon meeting, then of Community Five. From there we went to the MD Fall Conference in Amehrst, N.S., and then back, and we finished up in Garnish. I must say we enjoyed meeting new Lions and making new friends; everyone was so friendly and we were welcomed with open arms. While I was attending the Charter night celebrations in Pouch Cove, I had the privilege, along with CC/ PDG Len, to present a plaque to Immediate Past President Lion Lillian Moran as the Best President in MD N. Congratulations Lion Lillian. On the weekend of December 4 & 5, 2010, I along with eleven other Lions attended a GMT and GLT training seminar at the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp. The seminar was facilitated by PID Terry Graham. Lions from N3 also attended. We met Saturday evening from 6 to 8:30 pm and again on Sunday from 9am to 12 noon. The sessions went really well and everybody thoroughly enjoyed it. This was PID Terry s first visit to the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp and he was very impressed with it. The Lions that attended will now try and work around the items that PID Terry went over with us. The main idea was to inform the members of the MERL team and Zone Chairs that this is the final year for the MERL team as we know it. The MERL team will be replaced by a Global Membership Team (GMT) and a Global Leadership Team (GLT). This will all take place next year on July 1, At the beginning of this Lions year, I asked all Cabinet Chairs to appoint two Lions to their Committees. This way, the Chair would not be alone and may get more ideas on the things that this Committee could do. Since the DGO in Marystown, some District Chairs have notified me as to the Lions they chose. I still need to hear from more of the Cabinet. The other reason I did this was to try and get more Lions involved, and who knows, one of those Lions may like to take over that Committee next year or the following year. So please appoint the new members. Our International President Scruggs has asked us to Shine a Light on Hunger for the months of December and January. With the Christmas Season fast approaching, we need to look at the less fortunate in our community. We need to make sure that our food banks are full. Some Clubs supply food hampers and Christmas dinners, and some do this in conjunction with the churches and other organizations. I guess by the time you read this, most of the Clubs Christmas activities will be over. I trust you all had fun doing this. Don t forget to check our District Website for my visitation schedule. If you want me to attend your Club for either a Charter Night or meeting please contact me as soon as possible. Jean and I wish all the best to you and yours at Christmas and may you have a happy and healthy New Year. Lewis

3 At Christmas A man is at his finest towards the finish of the year; He is almost what he should be when the Christmas season's here; Then he's thinking more of others than he's thought the months before, And the laughter of his children is a joy worth toiling for. He is less a selfish creature than at any other time; When the Christmas spirit rules him he comes close to the sublime." Through one of the marvels of modern technology, the internet, I am able, this Christmas Season, to relay to all Lions/Lioness and Leos of District N- 4, the very best for this Blessed Christmas Season. Since becoming a Lion 37 years ago, my aim has been TO SERVE Your loyalty, your confidence in me in choosing me as your District Governor, has been my abundant reward. I speak now from my home and from my heart to you all. To those with blindness, sickness, or infirmity; and to those who are celebrating this season, with their children and grand-children. To all - to each - I wish a Happy Christmas. God Bless You! District Governor N-4 Lewis

4 FROM THE 1ST VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR Hello Fellow Lions, Another month has passed, and by your Activities Reports, Clubs are busy doing what we do best helping the less fortunate, helping those in need. At this time of year we are preparing Christmas Hampers, donating food to the food banks, and toys for the Happy Tree. Hoping everyone will have a wonderful Christmas Day. There are still some Clubs we are not getting reports from. You know who you are; please make an effort to get your reports in so you can get credit for what you are doing. If we don t know what you are doing, we cannot give you credit for it. A lot of Clubs report on their Senior Citizen s Party, which is nice as it shows your community you care about all the community members. In return, you gain the community s support. I was over to Amherst, N.S. to the Multiple District Convention. A fine gathering of Lions and all meetings were very informative. I met a lot of new Lions, met Presidents and Secretaries from other Provinces that were Newfoundlanders. Myself and Ruth would like to wish each Lion and their family a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. I hope the new year is a very prosperous one. Thank you very much. Lion Morgan V.D.G. "Lionism: Kindness in Motion" FROM THE 2ND VICE-DISTRICT GOVERNOR Lions, December marks the half-way point of our Lions year. The past six months for me as your 2nd Vice-District Governor has been a wonderful experience. Since last month s newsletter, I ve visited the Grand Bank and the Garnish Lions Clubs for their Charter nights. It is great to see, personally, the accomplishments of these clubs, enjoy the fellowship of their company and, of course, enjoy their hospitality and food. The first weekend in December a training session was given at the Lion Max Simms Memorial Camp. The purpose of this training session was to introduce the District Governors, Vice-District Governors, Zone Chairs and MERL teams of Districts N3 and N4 to the Global Membership Team (GMT) and the Global Leadership Team (GLT) which will replace MERL as we have come to know it. I look forward to learning more about this innovation from Lions Clubs International. GMT and GLT should enable all Districts to increase in membership and to provide opportunities for Clubs to better serve our communities. My husband, Lion Jerry, and I would like to wish you and your families Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year. May this special time of the year provide you with the peace, love and happiness you all deserve. Yours in Lionism, Lion Gail

5 REMINDERS FOR SUCCESSFUL MEETINGS Be prompt and start meeting on time. Make and follow an Agenda, keep on schedule. Be just and firm, but courteous to all. Let the majority be heard. Allow each proposition full and free debate. Allow only one item of business on the floor at one time. The individual s desire must be merged for the good of all. Use business procedures to facilitate action not to obstruct. Keep committees active and effective. Hold regular and purposeful Executive Committee Meetings. Adjourn meetings on Schedule. PROTOCOL TO BE USED AT CLUB MEETINGS The President being presiding officer should recognize those present in the following order. DISTRICT GOVERNOR INTERNATIONAL OFFICERS PAST INTERNATIONAL OFFICERS CABINET SECRETARY TREASURER VICE DISTRICT GOVERNORS ZONE CHAIRPERSON PAST DISTRICT GOVERNORS VISITING CLUB PRESIDENTS VISITING LIONS AND GUESTS LIONS MEMBERS

6 From MD Council Chair, PDG Len Mooney Fellow Council, Vice-District Governors, and Lions, From my home to your home. We are getting so close to Christmas and the special time we have to share with family and friends that I want to take this opportunity to send you Greetings and Good Wishes. It is now time to take a little break from all we do as Lions to help serve our communities. I know that as Lions you will be out helping those in need. We will be contributing time, money, service and friendship to our fellow man by our Christmas concerts for shut-ins, by offering dinners to seniors and those less fortunate and I want to say a special thank you to families of Lions who often join with their family to help spread good cheer to all. Many times we do not know how much our work and service is appreciated, but so many seniors who are alone really appreciate you coming out and having a party and dancing with those who are able to get up and move, by having sing songs and by participating in Santa Claus Parades and Christmas Tree Lighting and by serving coffee and hot chocolate. But I think most of all that everyone appreciates a warm extended hand in friendship and blessings or that little hug we often give at special occasions because there is not a better feeling in the world when we give and receive those feelings especially a smile on the face of a man, woman or child. I was told a long time ago by someone that for each smile you give, you receive a 100. Give hundreds and you will receive thousands and that my friends is what makes Christmas what it should be. The next time you are walking in a crowd just smile and look and see how many smiles you receive. It will surprise you I know that Ruth and I have enjoyed meeting Lions throughout our multiple and those friendships we formed we will cherish for ever. We had a wonderful time in Port Aux Basques and also in Amherst and it was great to see the support that your District Governors are receiving as they visit their clubs and receive their reports of what you are doing. Do not keep secrets from your clubs, your district chairs, your friends or your families. Tell everyone you meet what you do and why you do it and ask everyone you know and meet to join you in what you do. Some will say yes, I will. Some will say no I won't but give them the chance to say yes or no. When you are out selling your tickets or take out dinners you get the same response. We will be having our Multiple Convention in May in St John's. When family and friends ask what would you like as a Christmas gift tell them Porter, Air Canada and West Jet have seat sales on and a one way ticket is as low as $79. One child could fly you down and one could fly you back and if you have a large family maybe they could cover a night at a hotel. Newfoundland has many beautiful historic and beautiful sights and it is the first place in North America to see the sun rise. Come join us for our convention and stay a while and enjoy our friendship and hospitality. We would love to meet more Lions in our multiple and attend your conventions and if we are not able to do so in person remember we are only a phone call or an away. If we can help you please let us know as we are a family and a Lions family is called a pride and we are proud to be Lions. We not only serve,we care. May this be the Best Christmas you ever had so far and may next year s be better again. Council Chair Len Mooney
