St. Herman House FOCUS Cleveland presents an evening with His Grace the Right Rev. Irinej, Serbian Orthodox Bishop of Australia & New Zealand: Seeing the Homeless Through the Eyes of Jesus on Monday, November 9 th at 6:30 p.m. at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 2587 W. 14 th Street in Cleveland. Tickets for this fundraiser and information can be obtained from Mark Host at (440) or markhost@sbcglobal.net Please note that we have resumed making pyrohy every week until Christmas. As always, new volunteers are needed and welcomed. As part of the parish s community outreach, our clergy participate in meetings held by the Parma Collaborative throughout the year. This organization coordinates many projects that serve the poor, needy, youth and senior citizens. Annually, our parish hosts a Collaborative Breakfast meeting. This year, a delicious breakfast was held in our parish center on Thursday, October 22 nd. We most sincerely thank the following individuals who made this event possible: P.M. Mary Anne, P.M. Anna, Helen Greenleaf, Carole & Don Holobinko, Tamara Host, Sally Morgan, Pauline Osad and Ludmyla Rowinsky. For 28 years our parish has brought the message of Christmas to our elderly parishioners over the radio and, now, throughout the world via internet. Once again we have reserved 2 hours of air time for our January 7 th Christmas Liturgy. For the past number of years, parishioners have sponsored this radio program. The cost to do so is $1,200. If you would like to sponsor the upcoming Christmas Liturgy on the radio, please speak to Fr. John. Please notify the clergy if a family member is admitted to the hospital. Remember only the Parma Hospital notifies the clergy of any parishioners admitted and then, only if the parishioner registers as a member of St. Vladimir s. Also, parishioners who would like a home visit are asked to contact the clergy and make their wishes known. Mark Your Calendars November 22, Annual Parish thanksgiving Dinner December 6, U.O.L. 4 Election Day is this coming Tuesday, November 3 rd When voters traveled mainly by horse, Tuesday as the ideal day because it allowed people to worship on Sunday, ride to the county seat on Monday and vote on Tuesday. All before market day on Wednesday. The month of November fit nicely between harvest time and harsh winter weather. Remember to do your civic duty and vote this Tuesday! Ohio voters have been seeing very slick, clever television ads of good looking middle aged actors promising 30,000 new jobs and billions in tax revenue if only we vote to make marijuana legal. With so many problems in the world and our nation, that is all we need to continue on our rapid road to self-destruction. Fr. John Harvey of our sister parish in Youngstown, wrote a very timely article on this particular subject in his monthly column in the U.O.L. Bulletin. I urge you to read it carefully. May it assist you in making the right choice on Tuesday. - Fr. John With Thanksgiving Day rapidly approaching, it is time to think of the poor and needy of our community by supporting our annual Canned Food and Dried Products Drive. This year, our Brotherhood is in charge of this worthy project. Special boxes will be place in the church vestibule. All donations will go to St. Herman Orthodox House of Hospitality in Cleveland. Please support this worthy project. Parents are especially reminded to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to teach their children to care for the less fortunate by having them bring their donations to the church. Now that the gore of Halloween is over, the following figures tell us how much money is so foolishly spent. $1.9 billion for decorations $550. million on costumes for pets $2.1 billion on candy. God has blessed us with the chance to live in the richest country on earth. Should we not use our blessings and wealth to glorify His Holy Name? The Ukrainian Women s League of America, Branch 12, invites you to attend an Art Show and Sale to be held on Friday, November 13 th and Saturday, November 14 th in the St. Andrew back hall, 7700 Hoertz Road, Parma. On Friday there will be a wine and cheese reception from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with an opportunity to meet the artists. Saturday hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to St. Matthew s Orthodox Church, Albion Road in North Royalton on Saturday, November 14 th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., for an afternoon with Bishop Anthony. Bishop Anthony will speak on The Liturgical Year from 1:00 2:15 p.m., followed by Current Issues Facing the church from 2:30 4:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. RSVP: The Cleveland Maidan Association invites you to join the Charity Marathon MERCY on Sunday, November 15 th from 12:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will be held in our Grand Hall and will include vocal, instrumental and dance performances by the Ukrainian youth of Cleveland and bandura master classes. Ukrainian cuisine and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. All proceeds will go to support the families of deceased and injured heroes in Ukraine. 4

6 NEWS FROM OUR PARISH LIBRARY We are grateful for a monumental book published and donated by the UZO staff: Chronology of the United Ukrainian Organizations of Ohio: Historical Memoirs The book is available for circulation. We have also purchased a very interesting book entitled Pre-Modern Identities in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus by Serhii Plokhy, as well as The Last Empire: the Final Days of the Soviet Union, also by Serhii Plokhy.
