Educaton seeks to make character vgorous wlthdut makng t harsh or bosterous, patent wthout ndfference, conscentous wthout beng hypercrtcal, effcent wthout ostentatlousness, symmetrcal and mpressve, noble and but sympathetc wth the less self-relan- worthy, rch n tself, but wthout selfshness. The problem of educa- t, ton s not to teach us how to make the bow of Ulysses that bow s made wthout dffculty but t s to create men of strength, of t, who can bend the bow. The problem s not so much to teach men how to get rch, altho that may be mportant, but how to use rches after they are ganed; how to save themselves from beng crusht by ts responsbltes, from beng smothered by ts soft pleasures, or torn n peces by ts dstractons. The problem s not how to get great honor, place, emnence, but how to bear the responsbltes whch great honor always carres along wth t. Educaton seeks to make the ndvdual of resource, of the power of ntatve, of honesty and honor, n whom the vson of truth s unted wth the power of dong ones duty, n whom tenderness of heart the sufferng s Justly Joned wth capacty moral ndgnatons. t seeks to tran leaders ntellectual, ethcal, relgous, cvl. t seeks also to lft the whole level of the race to broader and clearer seeng, to fner thnkng and nobler apprecaton.
