1 February 2014 THE NORFOLK KNIGHT Knights of Columbus Volume 34, No. 8 Norfolk, Virginia Council 367 The First Council In The South 1898 COMING UP AT THE FIRST COUNCIL IN THE SOUTH February 2: February 5: February 9: February 16: February 16: February 19: March 1: Super Bowl Party Business Meeting Knights United at Blessed Sacrament 8 AM Fabulous Family Breakfast Membership SPX Social Meeting/2 nd Degree Mardi Gras Ball Grand Knight s Message Brothers, Families, and Friends of Council 367: As we move into the second month of the New Year here at The First Council in the South, we are still charging ahead with lots of worthwhile projects. January was a busy month and February promises to be as equally busy. Some of the events the Council hosted in January include our Fabulous Family Breakfast, Friday Night Socials, the Fourth Degree Holiday Pot Luck, and we held our Council level Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The Blue Mass on January 30 th was postponed due to weather and will be rescheduled in the near future. A huge thank you goes out to everyone that supported these events and made each one of them a success. But there is still more to do. Looking forward into February, there are still lots of way for you to get involved. Some of our upcoming events are the Council s Super Bowl Party on February 2 nd. Come on out and watch the big game with your Brothers and their families. There will be snacks and drinks available but if you would like, you can bring a dish or dessert to share. On February 9 th, we will be attending Blessed Sacrament for our Knights United Mass and then we have our Fabulous Family Breakfast on February 16 th. So again, mark your calendars and make every effort to support these events. Be sure to check the Council s Facebook page for any update to all events. There has been a change to our Friday Night Socials. We will only be having a Friday Night Social when someone steps up to share their culinary specialty. If no one steps up to host a Friday Night Social the hall will be closed. The Council is scheduled to host the Friday Night Social on the 1 st and 3 rd Fridays and the Columbus Club is scheduled for the 2 nd and 4 th Fridays. So, if you are interested in hosting a Council Friday Night Social, please contact myself or the Deputy Grand Knight. MARDI GRAS BALL Brothers, Families and Friends, Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent, is just around the corner. But, before we get there, "Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!" On Saturday, March 1, Knights of Columbus Norfolk Council 367, "The First Council in the South," will hold its MARDI GRAS BALL at our Council Hall, 5201 Kennebeck Ave. in Norfolk. The evening will begin at 6:00 p.m. with an open bar followed by a down home Cajun dinner at 7:00 p.m. featuring Chicken and Andouille Sausage Gumbo, Shrimp Étouffée, Red Beans & Rice, Creole Jambalaya, and Cajun Vegetables. After dinner, the real celebration begins as the party gets hoppin' with entertainment by Gina Dalmas & The Cow Tippin' Playboys! Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door and are available from any Council officer. Attire for the evening will be semi-formal (coat and tie for gentlemen). For more information, contact Ron Schafer at So make plans now to celebrate Mardi Gras with the Krewe of Columbus at "The First Council in the South!" Ron Schafer Deputy Grand Knight Program Director/Council Activities Chairman Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and auxiliary on issues of concern. The publication is posted on the Council s website at kofc367.org and can be mailed to members free of charge, upon request. Comments may be mailed to: Editor, 5201 Kennebeck Ave., Norfolk, VA
2 Knight of the Month This month s honoree as Knight of the Month has only been a member of Council 367 for a short period of time, but since he has joined The First Council in the South he has been involved in some way with nearly every event that the Council has hosted. Even though he has encountered some medical issues over the past few months, it has not slowed him down. He can be counted on to be there when needed and has recently chaired the Council Free Throw Championship which was a huge success. Please join me in congratulating this very dedicated brother as February s Knight of the Month. Thank you Ed Webb for all that you do! Steve Family of the Month Although this family has only been a member of Council 367 The First Council in the South for less than a year they have hit the ground running. They attend all Council events as a family and are always willing to help in any way they can. Their efforts and dedication have ensured that each Council event is successful. They are active members of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk. I cannot say enough about this family and all the help they have provided to our Council. Please join me in congratulating Mark, Jane, Madison, and Dalaney White as February s Family of the Month. Steve God Bless Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 If you are able to host a Columbus Club Friday Night Social, please contact Mike Atkinson or Jack Michalski for those scheduled Friday nights. It is our goal to have the Christopher Lounge open to all every Friday Night for food, fellowship and friendship and would appreciate everyone s effort to make this happen. If the dinner is not scheduled before the calendar is sent out, it will be advertized through and Facebook. I want to thank each of you for all that you do to help lift our Council to the next level. I urge those of you who are not very involved, to get that way. We need your talents and ideas. I also want to remind all Brother Knights to wear your name tags to Mass and let your Priest and fellow parishioners know that you are a proud member of The First Council in the South. Steven W. Kocurek Grand Knight Columbus Club Report If the weather has cooperated by the time you read this, the flower boxes in front of the Main Hall will have been repaired and repainted thanks to Dan Zinni and Joe Rejuney s son. Ron Stover also repaired the fence between us and the apartments recently. There are many other things at the Council Home that are in need of some repair and/or freshening up. If you see something you feel you can handle, contact me or a Club Officer and we can put you to work. It is also not too late to sign up for the VIP program this year, see Jack Michalski for details. Remember, this is your club and it takes help from all of us to make it better!
