1 May 2015 THE NORFOLK KNIGHT Knights of Columbus Volume 35, No. 11 Norfolk, Virginia Council 367 The First Council In The South 1898 COMING UP AT THE FIRST COUNCIL IN THE SOUTH May 1: May 5: May 6: May 10: May 10: May 14 May 17: May 19: May 20: May 22: May 29: May 31: Cinco de Mayo Dinner 5 PM Business Meeting Knights United CTK 8:30 AM Mother s Day Lady Auxiliary Meeting (6:30 PM) Fabulous Family Breakfast Fraternal Benefits Night (7 PM) Social Meeting (1 st Degree) Family Picnic (12-5 PM) Grand Knight s Message Brothers, Families, and Friends of Council 367, Our busy stretch run to the end of this Fraternal Year continues this month as May is packed with events and activities that offer ample opportunities for all to step up and get involved at The First Council in the South. A Cinco de Mayo celebration, our Knights United at Mass program, our Fabulous Family Breakfast, the Spring Family Picnic and the start-up of our Ladies Auxiliary are just a few of the items on our calendar this month, but I need to mention two in particular that are of special note. First, I encourage you to take a look at the calendar in this month s Norfolk Knight and every month of the summer and take note of the nights that we are operating the Craft Beer Pub at Harbor Park. In this, our second season working this concession stand at the Norfolk Tides baseball games, we have an opportunity to provide a huge financial shot-in-the-arm to our home corporation, the Columbus Club Association of Norfolk, who owns and maintains our Council Home. Since we made the decision a few years ago to close our BINGO operation, we have been searching for a revenue stream to take the place of BINGO. We have found it at Harbor Park! Last season, the Council and the Columbus Club took in over $12, in profits from our efforts at the Craft Beer Pub, which went a long way in keeping the bills paid, the roof repaired and the lights on at our Council Home. But, for this effort to succeed, WE NEED HELP!!! This cannot be a program that sees the same Brothers showing up to work each game. See Grand Knight s Message, Page 3 Council Activities Thank you all for the great support last month. There was a great showing at the Knights United at Mass at Blessed Sacrament and for the clean-up of the kitchen for our health inspection. The weekend of April was also a testament to our dedication and flexibility. We manned KOVAR where we raised more than $5000, poured beer at opening night at a sold out TIDES game, had three of our brother Knights obtain the Fourth Degree, and had a great crowd for the Fabulous Family Breakfast. Great job to all who participated. LADY AUXILIARY There has been some interest expressed in forming the Ladies Auxiliary for Council #367 the First Council in the South. Linda Pressler has offered to serve as a Point of Contact in order to poll the interest of the Ladies of the Knights of Columbus membership. This invitation is to spouses, mothers, and daughters of Knights (both living and deceased, active or inactive). Ladies must be 18 years of age or older. If there is enough interest, the Auxiliary will be instated at the In and Out Dinner this summer. Please contact Mrs. Pressler at or lindapressler@yahoo.com to express your comments regarding your interest. Also please let her know if you are willing to serve the Auxiliary in a leadership role. A preliminary meeting will be held on Thursday, May 14, at 6:30 in the Christopher Lounge at the Council to nominate officers, establish annual dues, create by-laws and suggest activities for the upcoming year. All interested ladies are invited to attend. This meeting will be followed by a short meeting on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 for the election of officers to serve beginning in September when the Auxiliary will become active. CINCO de MAYO NIGHT Join us for an All You Can Eat Taco bar featuring soft and hard tacos, beans and rice and chips and salsa. All for only $5. (that's only 76 pesos) We will also be featuring Mexican beer specials. See Council Activities, Page 3 Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and auxiliary on issues of concern. The publication is posted on the Council s website at kofc367.org and can be mailed to members free of charge, upon request. Comments may be mailed to: Editor, 5201 Kennebeck Ave., Norfolk, VA

2 Knight of the Month May s Knight of the Month is another relatively new face around our Council but has been a Brother Knight for over 10 years. This Brother recently transferred to our Council from Jacksonville, Fla. and is finding more and more ways to get involved. He has been very active with our successful Roundtable at his home Parish, Christ the King Catholic Church, and was out last month with other Brothers distributing Tootsie Rolls and collecting for KOVAR. And, he has been a regular at Harbor Park, pulling beer for thirsty patrons at our Craft Beer Stand. I am happy to introduce Brother Ed Nettleton as our Knight of the Month for May Congratulations Ed! Congratulations! Ron Family of the Month Our Family of the Month for May has returned to our Council after several years away and has, once again, become a regular fixture around The First Council in the South. He has stepped in and begun working our Fabulous Family Breakfasts and other events as a contributor in the kitchen and is the Chairman of our Family Committee for this Fraternal Year. He is currently working on plans for our Spring Family Picnic coming at the end of May. She teaches at Christ the King Catholic School and they are active parishoners at Christ the King Catholic Church. It is with pleasure that I introduce our Family of the Month for May, Brother Chris Miller and his wife, Kelly; daughters Victoria, Erin, and Emily and son, Patrick. Congratulations to you all! Congratulations! Ron God Bless America Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 This effort needs all of us to prayerfully consider stepping up and working a game or two. You must wear black or khaki colored trousers or shorts (NO DENIM) and a Knights of Columbus ball cap. Please, if you need more information, you can contact me and I can tell you everything you need to know. The schedule is in each month s calendar in The Norfolk Knight, it s posted on our website, or contact me and I can send you a copy. The second item in May that you especially need to be aware of is our Fraternal Benefits Night. Our Worthy Field Agent, Raymond Selg, and his team are putting together a wonderful program that will have something for everyone highlighting several existing programs the Order has to offer. Our Fraternal Benefits Night will be on Tuesday, May 19. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with snacks and heavy hors d oeuvres and the program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. If your just looking for a little information or are interested in upgrading your financial plan, our Fraternal Benefits Night can show you everything that the Knights of Columbus as to offer. Please make plans now to join us! In case you may have forgotten, there are several ways to stay up-to-date with what is happening around The First Council in the South., You can visit our website at you can check out our pages on Facebook and Twitter, or you can get on our distribution list. And if you are not receiving updates from the Council on a regular basis, contact a Council officer and let him know. Be sure to check out the calendar and the information in the rest of this Newsletter to stay on top of all that is going on! Get out and enjoy this beautiful spring weather and I ll see you around the Council. May God continue to bless us all! Ronald P.
