May I suggest that you respond by looking around and pointing out other parishioners and mentioning that John, the lector, is a Brother Knight, Chris, the Eucharistic Minister, is a Brother Knight, Joe, the usher, is a Brother Knight, Mike, who coaches the school s basketball team, is a Brother Knight you get the idea. And so should your prospect. Knights who are involved in their Council are also committed to their parish. Craft Beer at Harbor Park Thank you to the 37 people who stepped up and supported the Craft Brew Pub at Harbor Park to make it another successful season. We still might have Play-off games in September. As of now, we have made approximately $16,508. The final tally of 37 games will be inserted in next month s newsletter. Thanks to Patrick Nash, PGK, for his tremendous effort ensuring the right amount of people were scheduled to work the games. Also, thanks to the following brothers, their families, and friends with number (#) of games worked that supported this effort. (35) Patrick Nash, (24) Marion Person (23) John Person, Jim Pressler, (21) Dan Doyle, (12) Ron Schafer, (9) Tommy Armstrong, John Bagg, John Escuadra, (7) Napoleon Caragan, Larry Forsythe, (5) Ed Isajewicz, Dan Schmidt, Mike Schroeder, (4) Shawn Michaels, Sean Myers, Tom Horsch, Charlie Prietz, Mike Schmidt, (3) Peter Laurin, Henry Martinez, (2) Kathleen Armstrong, Sam Cook, Chris Decker, Jorge Pousa, Todd Womack, (1) Gianna & Shelly Anderson, Paul Como, Jeff Dorsogna, Silver Ibenye, Peter Makar, Mymy Martinez, Gary Pesquera, Kevin Riley, Dean Rudman, & Rocky Sanchez. Council Activities Go to our website at for more detailed info. KNIGHTS UNITED AT MASS Come join us on September 9 th at Christ the King for 0830 Mass. AYCE FABULOUS FAMILY BREAKFAST Please join us on Sunday, September16, for the best breakfast in town. We do a lot in our parishes and between parishes, but we re not always visible as Knights. Think of how much easier it would be to answer your prospective Knight if John and Chris and Joe and Mike and all the other Knights in that parish were wearing their Council shirts, their name badges, or even just their emblem pins. Since Council 367 isn t identified with a specific parish, parishioners may not recognize us as Knights in their midst unless we identify ourselves. Let s not hide our Columbian lamps under baskets but put them out where all may see our example. Our first Fabulous Family Breakfast of the Fraternal Year served a delicious breakfast to over 65 adults and lots of children. That s a great turnout for August. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a success. See Grand Knight s Message, Page 3 See Council Activities, Page 4 Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and auxiliary on issues of concern. The publication is posted on the Council s website at kofc367.org and can be mailed to members free of charge, upon request. Comments may be mailed to: Editor, 5201 Kennebeck Ave., Norfolk, VA
2 Knight of the Month Last year we welcomed a great class of Knights from Sacred Heart Parish. These gentlemen wasted no time making their first three degrees and jumping right in to helping out at all Council activities. August s Knight of the Month was in this group. Since joining the Order he has been present and actively involved in practically every meeting and activity. If help is needed he eagerly steps forward. Most recently, the Columbus Club put out an urgent request for someone to fill the new state- mandated position of Certified Food Protection Manager as well as the vacant Food Service Manager position. Without these positions, our kitchen would have to shut down. In true Knightly fashion, our Knight of the month came to the rescue and volunteered to take on both positions. It is with great pleasure and gratitude that I name Brother Garnell Housler as the Knight of the Month for August Congratulations! Ed Family of the Month After several years of service to Council 367, the Knights of Columbus, and the United States Navy, this month s Family of the Month will be taking advantage of the freedom of their retirement to explore the country. They are faithful members of Our Lady of Victory Chapel where he is an altar server and the Round Table coordinator and the Council 367 s representative on the Chapel Council. He has served the Council and the Fourth Degree Assembly as an officer and active member. He is also a Past Grand Knight. He has given of his time to guide young men and women through the Navy League Sea Cadets. She has helped the other ladies of the Council in preparing for various Council activities while tirelessly supporting her husband in his pursuits and his naval career. They will be with us awhile longer before hitting the road, but we wish fair winds and following seas. Congratulations to Council 367 s Family of the Month for August 2018, PGK Jorge & Denise Pousa, Congratulations! Ed Congratulations to PGK John & Marion Person on the birth of their Granddaughter Genevieve Leigh Clarke born 8/30/18! GLC = GOOD LUCK CHARM Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 As I write this, we re moving toward the end of the Tides season. Another well done to all of you who have come out to sell beer. Those of us who worked bingo can tell you that the fresh air of Harbor Park and the relatively few nights a year we work ball games beat a smoke-filled hall every Tuesday night. We have our first Admission Degree at our social meeting on 19 September. We already have two or three candidates and there s plenty of time to recruit a few more. Finally, thanks to Worthy Deputy Grand Knight Dan Doyle for stepping up to the podium and chairing the social meeting on 15 August. He set a new standard for all of us Grand Knights present and future with his 29 minutes gavel-to-gavel meeting. I can t wait to see how he does next Fraternal Year! Ed Isajewicz $10 Football Pools We ve started a new $10 pool that will have 10 chances to win during the Playoff games and the Super Bowl. THIS WILL NOT INCLUDE THE WILDCARD GAMES! Each square is $10, and you must pay before writing your name on if present. If you can t make it to the council, call me at , with how many squares wanted. I ll reserve your squares for 7 days. If payment is not received by then, it s first come, first paid. The ten payoffs are for the following games: The four Divisional games played on January 12/13 will each have a payout of $50. The two Conference Championship games played on January 20 th will each have a payout of $50. The first three quarters of the Super Bowl will have a payout of $100 and the final score of the Super Bowl will have a payout of $200. The 1 st pool has already been filled and we started a 2 nd pool which has 13 squares left. If it looks worthwhile, we ll start a 3 rd pool. I ll be collecting the money at all meetings and events. Once filled, I ll put out the numbers for each square. John Person, PGK Columbus Club Treasurer 3
3 Columbus Club Report Brothers, Families, and Friends, We had a successful Health Department Inspection of the Council 367/Columbus Club Kitchen on 10 August. I would like to thank the Brothers that came out and worked to keep our kitchen clean and equipment running properly. Perhaps some of you have noticed new signs in our lot? FYI- during my time as President I have passed my parking spot at the door for use by the Knight of the Month. I do not drive at night and felt that this was a good way to reward the Knight of the month in a small way. Also, some of you might have noticed that we have put up signs reminding everyone that we are not responsible for damage to cars or loss of contents of vehicles parked in the lot. These sorts of thing have not been a big problem in the past, but please remember to lock your cars. Our regular Columbus Club Meeting was held on August 29 th. We finalized the Columbus Club Budget for the fraternal year at that meeting. Also, at this meeting, we discussed our rainy day fund and finalized several other important items. A special thanks goes out to all those who volunteered their time and energy to work with Patrick Nash at the Ball Games. Your help and dedication to the Council and Columbus Club by these efforts is invaluable. Save the Date of Saturday 17 November 2018 to come out and help with the Fall Clean up prior to our annual Oyster Roast. Hope to see many of you there. The grounds will need to be cleaned, and several small jobs inside and out will need to be accomplished. Many hands make for easy completion of work. In the meantime, we are continuing to make progress on paying off the mortgage as well as continuing to work to keep our expenses under control and to address needed maintenance and repairs in as orderly fashion as practicable. Tom Horsch Columbus Club President Council Activities from Page 1 FRIDAY NIGHT SOCIAL The first one of the Fraternal Year on September 14 th.
