1 December 2013 THE NORFOLK KNIGHT Knights of Columbus Volume 34, No. 6 Norfolk, Virginia Council 367 The First Council In The South 1898 COMING UP AT THE FIRST COUNCIL IN THE SOUTH December 4: December 6: December 6: December 8: Business Meeting Nocturnal Adoration SPX 1-2 AM Decorating Hall for Christmas Knights United at Mass at Little Creek Base Chapel 0830 December 13: Christmas Pot Luck December 15: Fabulous Family Breakfast December 18: Social Meeting Grand Knight s Message Brothers, Families, and Friends of Council 367: Holiday Greetings Brothers and all. The Advent Season is upon us. I hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and that the Holiday season will once again bring family and friends back together for Christmas and New Years. As we all get into the Holiday mode, many folks around us get caught up in what have become traditional holiday activities shopping on Black Friday after Thanksgiving, getting lights and Christmas trees up, hanging wreaths on your front door, worrying what to get those loved ones that special present, hanging stockings, baking goods with the kids who eagerly await the arrival of Santa, and which Christmas and New Year s parties to attend. Although these are certainly some of the things that we remember to do during the Holiday season, let s not forget the real reason we celebrate Christmas the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Every opportunity you get while you talk to your family, friends, and co-workers during the Holidays, remind them of this. Often I hear talk about all the things I mentioned above, yet very rarely do you hear people mention the birth of Jesus. Simply put, let us practice one of our traditional programs, KCIC or Keep Christ in Christmas. Council Activities & Programs First of all, thank you to all the Knights and their family members for making November a huge success. It is typically our busiest month which included the Special Olympics, Memorial Mass, David Spencer s Ordination, the Fabulous Breakfast, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Oyster Roast, Friday night dinners, Knights United at Mass, and the cleaning of the kitchen for an inspection. It s truly heartwarming to know we have each other s support to pull off this many events in one month. Other events that will require your continuing support are listed below: HALL DECORATION This will be held December 6 th to decorate our Council for Christmas. You ll also be rewarded with pizza supplied by the Columbus Club. CHRISTMAS POT LUCK On December 13 th, the Council will provide ham and smoked turkey and ask everyone else to bring whatever tasty fixings you d like to eat and share with everyone. KNIGHTS UNITED AT MASS Mass will be Dec 8 th at the Little Creek Chapel inside Gate 5 at FABULOUS FAMILY BREAKFAST On Dec 15 th come enjoy breakfast with Santa Claus. BLUE MASS This Mass is for public servants such as police officers and fire fighters. The date will be held in January, exact date and time TBA. We truly need a CHAIRMAN(s) to step up and head this event. MARDI GRAS PARTY Will be held Saturday, March 1st before LENT. Again, we need a CHAIRMAN(s) to step up and help organize our first Mardi Gras party. Vivat Jesus and Merry Christmas, John Person The month of November was a very busy month for The First Council in the South. Thank you so much to all the Brothers, family members and friends of the K of C that helped, supported, or attended some or all of our events and activities last month. A special thank you to our Worthy Chaplain Fr. Matthias Lusembo for his blessings and spiritual advice. All these activities could not have occurred without the hard work and coordination of key Brothers who united members of our Council to get things done. See Grand Knight s Message, Page 3 Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and auxiliary on issues of concern. The publication is posted on the Council s website at kofc367.org and can be mailed to members free of charge, upon request. Comments may be mailed to: Editor, 5201 Kennebeck Ave., Norfolk, VA

2 Knight of the Month This Brother s work within the Council and the Columbus Club has been nothing short of outstanding. He works diligently at ensuring that the Council s funds are maintained in an orderly fashion, membership cards are issued, and the membership rosters are as accurate as they possibly can be. His tireless effort has helped the Council collect past dues from members ensuring that they keep their membership current and in good standing. He supports other events at the Council and is an active member of the St Pius X Parish. Please help me in congratulating the December 2013 Knight of the Month Brother Mike Atkinson. Steve Family of the Month You can catch this Family at almost every event and Friday Night Social that we schedule. He is a civil Service employee for the U.S. Navy, a Past Grand Knight, and a Former District Deputy for District #1. She works for the Norfolk Public Schools. They can be counted on whenever to assist in executing one of our fabulous events. They brighten the mood of the Christopher Lounge when they bring their beautiful grandchildren, Timmy, Heaven, and Tara with them. It is with great pleasure that I announce December s Family of the Month, The Woodington s PGK, FDD Tim and Kathy, along with Timmy, Heaven, and Tara. Steve God Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 Our holiday gift basket drive has been a huge success! The Council donated 26 Thanksgiving baskets to less fortunate families in the area. A big THANK YOU goes out the PGK John Squad Escuadra for all his hard work in coordinating with heartwarming and up lifting endeavor and all those that helped make Thanksgiving special for those in need. Other events held during the month of November include sponsoring the roller skating event for the Virginia Fall Championships of the Special Olympics, then came our Memorial Mass where we remembered the Brother Knights that have left us to be in the presence of our Lord and Savior. Next came our Fabulous Family Breakfast, and last but not least our 3 rd Annual Oyster Roast. Again these event could not have taken place without the hard work and dedication of our Brother Knights. As we move into the Christmas season, there is still a lot of work to be done and a lot of good times to be had. For the December 6 th Friday Night Social we will be decorating the hall for Christmas. Please come and join us in preparing the hall for celebrating the Birth of Christ (the Columbus Club is buying pizza). Then we will be having our Annual Christmas Pot Luck party on December 13th, followed by Breakfast with Santa on December 15 th. So mark your calendars and plan to attend. All of our events are open to the public so I urge you to invite your family and friend to join up. I can t think of a better way to introduce a potential member to the good times and all the good deeds done by the The First Council in the South. Continue to support your Priest, parish, and community. And remember to take a look around you. More often than not, some men will say that the reason they haven t joined the Knights of Columbus before was because they were never asked. Ask them. Remember, one new member per member for the year. Ask some of the inactive Knights, when was the last time you attended a meeting? then make plans to attend a meeting together. Thank you for all that you do and may you and your families have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Steven W. Kocurek Grand Knight Bless America 3

5 OFFICER S RESPONSIBILITIES New members have asked what are the officer s responsibilities. This month and next month s newsletters will write what these responsibilities are for the Council. Next month will include the Lecturer, Advocate, Warden, Inside/Outside Guards, Board of Trustees, and Chaplain. To be an officer, you must be a third degree Knight. More info at GRAND KNIGHT The grand knight is responsible for the overall welfare of the council. Elected annually by the council membership, the grand knight must provide thoughtful and inspired leadership to the council officers, the Service Program directors, chairmen and members of the council. More specifically, his duties include: presiding over council meetings, acting as an ex officio member of all committees; appointing the membership and program directors and working with them on the selection of Service Program chairmen, membership recruitment teams and retention chairmen; convening officers for a monthly meeting; appointing special committees not mandated by the laws of the council; overseeing the proper exemplification of the First Degree; and, finally, making sure that all reports and reporting forms required by the state or Supreme circle sponsored by his council. Finally, the grand knight, together with the deputy grand knight and trustees, is responsible for recommending a chaplain to the ordinary of the diocese for his appointment DEPUTY GRAND KNIGHT The deputy grand knight is the second in command in the local council. He is also elected annually, assists the grand knight in the operation of council affairs and is responsible for any duties assigned to him by the grand knight. In the absence of the grand knight, the deputy grand knight presides at council meetings and functions as the grand knight would. CHANCELLOR The chancellor is elected annually to serve the council in a variety of ways. Primarily, he assists the grand knight and deputy grand knight in the execution of their duties and takes charge of the council during the incapacity or extended absence of both. With the cooperation and support of the grand knight, the chancellor has the important duty of strengthening the members interest in council activities. It is recommended that the chancellor serve as the chairman of the council s Admission Committee. RECORDER The recorder is responsible for keeping a true record of all the actions of the council and maintains all correspondence of the council. FINANCIAL SECRETARY The financial secretary s important role is underscored by the fact that he is not elected by the membership but, his appointment upon the recommendation of the grand knight and trustees is approved by the supreme knight for a period of three years. His work has a direct effect on council members, his fellow officers, the state council and the Supreme Council. Basically, the financial secretary s duties revolve around two key areas of council activities: financial records and membership records. The financial secretary collects and receives all moneys that come into the council from any source. He then turns that money over to the treasurer for deposit in the council account. TREASURER The treasurer is the elected official in charge of handling all council funds. He receives money from the financial secretary and issues a receipt for such. He is also responsible for depositing all money in the proper council accounts and providing a voucher or certificate of deposit to the grand knight for each transaction. The treasurer is also responsible for issuing payments to the Supreme Council on all assessments made by it to the council and for all orders of the council. Finally, the treasurer is responsible for keeping accurate accounts of the monies in the general expense fund of the council and the amount of money in any special funds established by the council.
