I have heard some questions and discussions around the Council about one topic that I d like to clarify. There still seems to be an impression that Council 367 and the Columbus Club are sort of opposed to each other. Questions arise about whether an event is a Council event or a Columbus Club event, which should be a nonissue. The distinction between the two organizations is actually a matter of IRS regulations. The Council is a tax exempt, nonprofit, fraternal organization as classified by the IRS. By IRS rules, there are things the Council can do and things it can t do if it is to retain its tax-exempt status. The Columbus Club is legally a separate corporation under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and is considered a for profit organization by the IRS and is subject to paying federal taxes. It can do things, such as owning and renting property, that the Council can t do. Some things are separate each organization has its own tax ID number, its own officers, maintains separate funds and accounts, and files its own reports to the IRS. See Grand Knight s Message, Page 3 Council Activities Go to our website at for more detailed info. POLAR PLUNGE Brother Kevin Riley will be making the cold dip in the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, February 2 nd to raise money for Special Olympics. Anyone willing to join him is welcome. 2 Knight of the Month January s Knight of the Month has never turned down a challenge. It remains to be seen, however, if he can convince this Grand Knight that newsletter deadlines are NOT advisory. He has successfully edited this newsletter, Council website, our Facebook site, and the on-line calendar. As Grand Knight he led Council 367 to a Star Council Award. Besides keeping our communications up to date, he devotes many hours to almost every Council event, especially in the kitchen for our Fabulous Family Breakfasts, Friday Socials, Lenten Fish Fries, Oyster Roast, Spaghetti Dinner, and the Family Picnic. He was also chairman of the very successful Coats 4 Kids drive and spends many hours as the Columbus Club Treasurer tracking the money coming in and ensuring the bills are paid to keep this building open. Congratulations to PGK John Person as Council 367 s Knight of the Month for January Congratulations! Ed Family of the Month Some people are so much a part of Council 367 that it seems we sometimes take them for granted. January s Family of the Month is so much a part of the Council that it is impossible to imagine Council 367 without them. They are active in various ministries at Christ the King in addition to the time devoted to the Knights of Columbus. He makes new members feel welcome into the Council and has a cheerful word or gesture for everyone all the time. He is also a regular in the kitchen and makes a mean spaghetti sauce as everyone enjoyed at the Spaghetti Dinner. Both of them attend practically every social event and provide pleasant company for all. Congratulations to PGK Joe and Ellie Marasco, Council 367 s Family of the Month for January Congratulations! Ed Welcome Congratulations and welcome to our newest member, Kristopher D Ceredon, who made his Admission (1 st ) Degree on January 22 nd. 500 Club Renewals It s time to renew your 500 Club Membership to have a chance to win $500 every month. Mail your checks to Dan Doyle at address provided on page 7 or contact him at Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 Aside from these legal niceties, for most practical purposes there is little distinction between the two. Both organizations share the same membership and functionally complement each other. Legally we have to keep the moneys of the two organizations separate, but each organization can donate money to the other. One way to look at it is that the Council and the Club are two sides of the same coin. The Council and the Columbus Club support each other and any apparent conflict between the two is just that apparent. February may be the shortest month, but the Council has a lot going on. In addition to our usual events, we have some special things happening. We start the month with a Special Olympics Polar Plunge, our Council Free Throw Contest at St. Pius X on Saturday, 2 February, and our Super Bowl Party. Our Friday Social will be a Valentine shrimp dinner. Just a reminder that we re switching times for the Knights United Mass to noon at St. Mary s Basilica on 10 February. The Fourth Degree is hosting a Steak and Shrimp Dinner on Friday, 22 February. Council 367 will host an Admissions (1 st ) Degree on Wednesday, 20 February. Get out and recruit men who should be Knights and get them to our Degree. Council 367 s Second Degree Team will conduct a Formation Degree Ceremony at Council 418 prior to 418 s Knighthood (3 rd ) Degree on Saturday, 16 February, at 11 AM. The date for the Second Degree is TBD. For details about these and all the events for February, look elsewhere in this newsletter or check the Council website at Ed Isajewicz Council Activities, from Page 1 AYCE FABULOUS FAMILY BREAKFAST Our next breakfast will be on February 17 th from 9:00 to 11:30 AM. It is now being held in the ball room for a little extra space to put all those Charlie Tators, bacon, biscuits and gravy away. Due to rising pork prices, we have changed our price to $10 for adults and $5 for children ages Still a GREAT DEAL! ASSEMBLY 1162 STEAK & SHRIMP DINNER On Friday, February 22 nd, come enjoy steamed shrimp with butter/cocktail sauce and a tasty steak cooked to order for only $30. Menu also includes salad, rolls & butter, a potato fixings bar, green beans and dessert. Starts at 6:30 pm with an open bar and hors d ourves, dinner at 7. Reservations can be made to Jack Michalski at or jfmkofc@cox.net or Melissa Kocurek at or at melissatm1@yahoo.com. Payment must be received prior to the dinner. 3

3 Brothers, Financial Secretary Report Dues notices where sent out after Thanksgiving. If you did not receive yours yet, please contact me. There are still 73 members that have not paid their dues. 2 nd Notices will be sent out on February 1 st. If you are having financial problems, please contact the Grand Knight or me so we can assist you with your dues. Information on the 4 th Degree Exemplification to be held in Richmond in April has been sent out. All 3 rd Degree Knights in good standing are eligible to join the 4 th Degree, if you are interested, contact me or any Sir Knight. All paperwork and money must be submitted before April 1, Mike Atkinson Financial Secretary Columbus Club Report Brothers, Families, and Friends, This month we successfully passed an ABC inspection and held training on the various ABC requirements that we must follow to maintain our license for sale of beer and wine. As some of you may know our recent Bar Manager Paul Como relocated to New Jersey and so we are in need of a new Bar Manager for the Christopher Lounge. The job involves keeping track of beer and soda stocks, running the bar and coordinating other bar tenders so we have someone to tend bar at our events. Training is available, and this is a great way to meet fellow Knights and have a good time. If interested, please contact me. As I mentioned before, we have a critical need for help this summer to work with PGK Patrick Nash during the July and August portion of the 2019 Tides baseball season. This is a critical fund raiser for both the Columbus Club and Council 367, we must fill that gap. However, we realize that everyone's personal schedule is demanding. Maybe 4 brother Knights can step up and cover a two-week portion. The schedule would already be set so you would know the dates to work. Patrick will still be involved, but really needs help. Please contact PGK Patrick Nash for more information. Maintenance - We have a list of pending maintenance work needing attention all help is appreciated. Recently we removed a large pine tree that had been hit by lightning several times and posed a potential danger to our parking lot as well as our neighbor s boat yard. We also had Dominion Power trim branches around the light poles in the parking lot. We will be scheduling a Spring work day after the cold weather goes away. Columbus Club Report, cont, Budget Review at Mid-Year - A quick summary of where we stand at Mid-Year. Our expenses are higher, and our income is lower than anticipated in our Budget for this year. Thanks to contributions from the 500 Club as well as brother knights and their families providing contributions, and council rents we are staying even at mid-year. Remember spaces on our Memorial Board are still available. We also are making good progress on paying down our mortgage. The current balance is $14,000. A complete Columbus Club Budget vs. Actual (as of Mid-Year) report will be posted at Council for your information. Hope to see many of you at our Super Bowl Party 3 February and Valentine s Day Shrimp Dinner 8 February. Tom Horsch Columbus Club President 4
