What a fraternal year it s been. During my first Grand Knight message back in July 2016, I stressed what was required to make the STAR council which hasn t been done here for several years. We re so very close to obtaining it. As I write this, we still have one member to admit into our Fraternity for the Father McGivney Award and one more to become an Insurance owner to receive the Founder s Award. We have all our four events for each category of Church, Community, Council, Culture of Life, Family, and Youth to be awarded the Columbian Award. As of right now, I ve submitted 17 for Church, 12 for Community, 12 for Council, 4 and soon to be 5 for Culture of Life, 11 for Family, and 6 for Youth. This is Great and I can t thank you enough for all your fantastic support. I ll still submit a few more for events we have scheduled before June 30 th. We also received the State Deputy Award which is a great honor. This is for being in good standing, having all our paperwork in (which is a lot), and having our events in for the Columbian Award. So as you can see, if we can get the Father McGivney Award, the Founder s Award, and the Columbian Award, we ll have that STAR! Let s keep recruiting! See Grand Knight s Message, Page 3 Craft Beer at Harbor Park The 2017 baseball season is in its third month and we ve already received over $6300 and still estimate another $2000 coming in. Brothers and family members have been terrific in stepping up to work the Craft Beer Pub at Harbor Park and with summer in full swing, it s going to get busier. We also need to find another person to be the lead for the last five remaining day games of the year due to Patrick starting a new job. See the calendar in this month's newsletter for the times of Tides' games on June 2, 4, 13, 15, 17, 27, 29 & 30, that we will be working and try to volunteer when you can. Open to all Brothers, families, & friends. You only need to be 18-years-old and wear black or khaki trousers or shorts and a ball cap. For more information or to volunteer, contact PGK Pat Nash at (402) or at ptjnash61@gmail.com. Council Activities NORFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOL LUNCHEON Will be held on Friday, June 9th from 9 to 1. This is where we serve around 300 special needs children lunch as they hand out their annual awards. Please support if you can. 4 TH DEGREE CHALICE CEREMONY Will be held at CTK at 5:30 on Friday, June 9 th. This ceremony is in honor of Sir Knights Barry Fitzgibbons, Fr David Nott, and Al Rudis. It will be video-taped to send to their families since one wasn t done prior to their funeral. Afterwards, head over to the Council for some tasty food and fellowship. See Council Activities, (cont Page 4) Knights of Columbus, Council 367 meetings are held the 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday of each month beginning promptly at 7:30 p.m. The Norfolk Knight is published by and for the membership of Knights of Columbus, Norfolk, Va. Council 367. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly to inform the membership and auxiliary on issues of concern. 2 Knights of the Month There are too many Great Knights and not enough months to recognize them all. In reality, it s a great problem to have for a Grand Knight. This is why there are two this month. These Brother Knights are both Treasurers in the Council and the Columbus Club. They re both Brothers in Breakfast as one makes his famous Charlie Tators & Bacon, while the other one is a PGK (Pancake Griddle King). Their cooking skills have also been used for the family picnic, the oyster roast, and many other Council events. They both stepped up to help with KOVAR and for the daytime TIDES baseball games where help is always needed. They re both strong supporters of their parishes, Blessed Sacrament and St Mary s Basilica where one of these Brothers provides beautiful music at Saturday Night Vigil Masses. According to him anyway! It is my pleasure to announce our Knights of the Month for May 2017, PGK Bob Epstein and Brother Charlie Prietz. Thanks for all you do! Could you guys fix me a bacon tator pancake sandwich? With syrup of course. Congratulations! John Family of the Month Doing something a little different this time and selecting two true Brother Knights for this month s family. They both have been in the Council for 8 years and are parishioners of St Pius X. There have been two major events I ve asked for help numerous times, KOVAR and the TIDES baseball games. They have both stood up and assisted with KOVAR at the Food Lion stores and at the SPX 10:30 AM Mass drive. They have been tremendous help in volunteering for the TIDES games that I can t stress enough about the importance of the money revenue we receive from these games. They both have Officer s positions in the Council and our Assembly. One is the Recorder and Faithful Scribe, and the other is the Outside Guard and Outer Sentinel. One of them also brought in a new candidate that will be going through the 1 st Degree on June 7 th which should fulfill our membership quota for the fraternal year. It is my pleasure to announce our Family of the Month for June 2017, Brothers Dan and Mike Schmidt. Thanks for all you do! Don t forget to sign up for more ball games and keep recruiting! John Grand Knight s Message, from Page 1 I will also stress the need to SUPPORT the TIDES baseball games again and to help with the Norfolk Public School Luncheon for Special Needs children on June 9 th. Details are in the Council Activities section. We had a successful KOVAR drive and I want to thank Coordinator PGK John Escuadra, PGK Bob Epstein for counting the money, PGK Joe & Ellie Marasco for making the chili, and to all who stepped up to raise money for this great charity. We still may have money coming in, but we raised over $6500. Included in this was a car donation from Todd Womack which brought in $1750. I m going to save a lot of my remarks for the In/Out festivities on July 16 th, so you ll just have to make sure you come and hopefully we ll be celebrating our STAR status. The voting on the incoming officers will be during the next Business meeting on June 7 th. Please attend so you can cast your ballot to let these Brothers know you appreciate their support. Brother Larry Forsythe is slated for the next Grand Knight, I can t think of a better person for the position! I truly appreciated everyone s support to make this a very successful year. I also have to give a shout out to my wife, Marion, for her tremendous support which made my job a lot easier. I call her my Grand Knightress! Brothers and all, it s been a pleasure & honor to serve you. God Bless You and I ll keep you in my prayers. If you can CONCEIVE it, truly BELIEVE it, we can ACHIEVE it! Stay Humble and Kind. John Person Columbus Club Report Brothers, Family, and Friends, First, let me thank Jim Wyrich for accepting the job as Christopher Lounge Bar Manager. Please lend Jim a hand when you can, and don t forget to thank him next time you see him. I must admit, it feels a bit strange to sit on the other side of the bar, but it s a feeling I believe I can adjust to. As the fraternal year draws to a close, I want to thank everyone for the assistance and advice that was afforded me by the membership. Together, we were able to accomplish things that hopefully will benefit the Corporation for many years to come. I want to give a special thanks to PGK Bob Epstien our Treasurer. Bob s dedication to the club this year was imperative. There is still much to be done, and it s going to take more than the officers alone to get it done. Let s have a great showing to let our Chaplain, Fr Joe, know how much we ve appreciated his prayers, support, and guidance for our Fraternal year. FABULOUS FAMILY BREAKFAST Will be held on Sunday, June 18 th. This is also Father s Day and what a better way to show Dad how much you Love him by bringing him to the best breakfast in town. You might even end up being his favorite child! We had 85 people at the last one. This is great! Keep getting the word out. IN/OUT CEREMONY & SOCIAL Will be held on Sunday, July 16 th. This is the installation of the incoming officers of Fraternal Year 2017/18 and giving our thanks to the outgoing officers of Fraternal Year 2016/17. We will have the ceremony at parish TBD at 1 PM. We will have our Social at the Council at 3 PM to eat a hearty meal and drinks where our yearly awards will be given out. Cost is still being determined. This will be an IN/OUT you won t want to miss! Hopefully, we ll be celebrating our Council s STAR status! WELCOME Please welcome our newest Brother into our fraternity, Brandin Sandoval who is PGK Bob Place s stepson. Also welcome four transfers into our Council, Brothers Tony Agati, Henry Martinez, Christopher Stehgerr, and Jeffrey Timby. Congratulations! Do any of you know how to pour a beer?
