When the great sculptor Michelangelo created his statue of Moses for Pope Julius II s tomb in 1505, he used the Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible) as his guide to describe Moses.

1 January 10th, Shevat, 5779 A Message from Rabbi Gaber- At a recent meeting, someone asked me about Jews having horns. He couldn t understand where that idea originated. I told him that it is a mistake in translation. When the great sculptor Michelangelo created his statue of Moses for Pope Julius II s tomb in 1505, he used the Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible) as his guide to describe Moses. The Torah teaches that after having come down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets that the skin of his face was radiant. (Exodus 34:29) The Hebrew word for radiant is keren which was translated by the Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible) as horn. Michelangelo sculpted Moses with horns to depict the rays of light coming from his head. Thus, a stereotype of Jews was born. I share with you this story because it is so important that we continue learning from one another, create moments of dialogue and conversation and be open to what others think, feel and say. This Shabbat, we will read the last of the ten plagues, including the killing of the first-born males. Immediately before this plague, God commands Moses to instruct the Israelites to publicly slaughter a lamb and spread the blood on their doorposts in order to ensure the Angel of Death will pass over their houses at the appointed time. The blood on the doorposts demarcates a line between the holy and the profane. I hope we can begin to do the same in our community by creating sacred space where different people will come together to learn from one another, and build relationships which stand against the rising profanity of bigotry and the hardening of hearts. Please join me this Sunday as we begin to open our hearts by confronting Antisemitism and hate at a program co-sponsored with Gracepoint Church. The program begins at 4:30pm and will end at 6:00pm. We know that the Eagles are playing and while many of us care deeply that they keep their season going forward (we will provide score updates), we also know that coming Face to Face with each other by creating ways for us to open our hearts to each other is the only way we will diminish the hate, eliminate the stereotypes and become a community of just and merciful people who respect and love each other. This is a regional program and tryouts are happening all over our area. For the tryout schedule and complete Games information, visit Sarah Sherman is the head coach for the Philadelphia Girls Basketball Maccabi team. She is sending out some information to you in hopes you may be interested in trying out! Tryouts for the Girl's Basketball team will be held: -Sunday, January 13th from 11:15-12:30 pm at Kaiserman JCC -Sunday, January 27th from 11am-12:30 pm at the Kaiserman JCC *Tryouts are open to Jewish teens that are 13 and not yet 17 by July 31, 2019.Tryout fee is $20 in advance and $30 at the door.* We will be traveling to Atlanta, GA this summer from July 28th-August 2nd! This is a unique experience where Jewish teens get to know other Jewish teens from around the world and have fun competing for a gold medal. The Kaiserman JCC is the proud host of the 2019 MidAtlantic Junior Maccabi Games where over 800 Jewish athletes from 20 East coast JCCs will gather in Wynnewood, PA on May 5, The Kaiserman JCC is also the home of Team Philadelphia which will bring over 120 high school athletes to the JCC Maccabi Games over the summer. In a nutshell, the JCC Maccabi Games is an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America and is the second largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world. The Mid-Atlantic Junior & Mini Maccabi Games were created by the Kaiserman JCC in 1998 and give our younger athletes a one-day Maccabi experience. 900 student athletes. 3,500 spectators. 30 sports. 1 great Maccabi Experience. If you are a Jewish athlete age 9-16, then the Kaiserman JCC is looking for you.
