2 JUNE 2018 / 5778 As Israel celebrated its 70 th birthday, thousands of people from 50 different countries joined the World Jewish Congress for the Jewish Hope project as a special gift to the State of Israel. Individuals from around the world sent videos in which they sang Israel s national anthem, Hatikva, in Hebrew. Albania, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Britain, South Africa, Russia, Paraguay, Mexico and many more among the countries that participated. For 2,000 years, Jewish life in the Diaspora has been characterized by the hope and dream that one day, the Jewish people would return as a free people to the State of Israel. This is the same hope that continues to strengthen Israel these days in its growth and prosperity, according to Theodor Herzl s vision as an innovative country in an ancient and historic land. In 1897, at the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland, the delegates joined in a rousing rendition of the song Hatikva. The beloved Zionist hymn would come to be known among generations of Jews around the world as the Jewish national anthem. In 1933, at the 18 th Zionsit Congress, the song was officially adopted at the movement s anthem, together with the nowfamiliar blue and white flag. In the 1940 s, many Jews in Europe defiantly sang the song as a gesture of collective hope and spiritual resistance in the face of Nazi Holocaust and Stalinist terror. Yet it was not until 2004 that the Israeli government officially designated Hatikva as the country s national anthem. Hatikva began its life as a nine-stanza Hebrew poem entitled Tikvatenu (Our Hope). Its author was a colorful 19 th century Hebrew poet, Naftali Hertz Imber ( ), who hailed from Austro- Hungarian Galicia. Inspired by the Hibbat Zion movement of early Zionism, Imber originally wrote the poem in 1878 while living in Romania. In 1882, Imber settled in Ottoman Palestine, and in 1886, Tikvateinu was published in Jerusalem in a collection of his poetry called Barkai (Morning Star). As far as the melody, the early 20 th century scholar Abraham Zvi Idelsohn, father of Jewish musicology, said that Hatikva s root melody belonged to no one folk song tradition. He claimed it constituted a generic wandering melody, common across European cultures without a distinct paternity. I have to admit that every time we chant Eitz Chayim Hi, I hear Hatikva! Hatikva remains an enduring symbol of Jewish nationhood and Israeli identity. Finally, in November 2004, over a century after its composition, Hatikva was officially designated the Israeli nation anthem by the Israeli Knesset, bringing its journey full circle. As long as Jewish spirit Yearns deep in the heart, With eyes turned East, Looking toward Zion. Our hope is not yet lost, The hope of two millennia, To be a free people in our land, The land of Zion and Jerusalem Cantor Riselle Bain
