Intellectual Sphisticatin As a prgram and a majr/minr that encurages interdisciplinary teaching and research, Judaic Studies curses are taught by schlars wrking at the cutting edge f their fields. Academic Flexibility The interdisciplinary nature f Judaic Studies means that yu are encuraged t take curses in a diverse range f departments and disciplines, such as English, Plitical Science, Histry, Religius Studies, Internatinal Studies, and Gegraphy. By specializing in Judaic Studies, yu retain the pprtunity t cntinue t explre different fields even as yu advance tward yur degree. 3 THE PROGRAM The Gerge Feldenkreis Prgram in Judaic Studies is a brad, flexible, interdisciplinary prgram designed fr undergraduates t gain an understanding f Jewish civilizatin and its diverse cultural experiences. The prgram, which is nn-thelgical in rientatin, is an academic explratin f the multi-faceted, sci-histrical, 4,000-year recrd f the Jewish peple. Curses taught and cmbined with the prgram curses highlight the variety f cultural, plitical, scial, and religius experiences f Jews in different times and places. The prgram is structured t prvide an in-depth liberal arts educatin that will cnstitute a fundatin fr advanced academic study, prfessinal careers in a variety f fields, and a mre cmplex and rich understanding f the wrld. 8 THE MAJOR (30 Credits) JUS 231 (Jewish Civilizatin: Sciety, Culture, and Religin). Any curse in Jewish r Israeli Literature ffered by the English Department. A curse in Hebrew at the 200-level r higher (which can be used simultaneusly t fulfill the Cllege f Arts and Sciences Language requirement). One curse in Ancient Jewish Histry and Sciety and ne curse in Mdern Jewish Histry and Sciety. JUDAIC STUDIES JUS 300- R Jewish Peplehd: The Jews: A Paradigm Shift Instructrs: Rabbi Cheryl Weiner Sectin: R: TU/TR 2:00pm-3:15pm Jew vs. Jew. New wine in ancient flasks. All metaphrs fr the paradigm shift that is ccurring within the Jewish wrld. Peplehd is an ld term used t describe what it means t be Jewish, but what des it mean tday. Thrugh an interdisciplinary apprach, the curse will encurage us t cnfrnt the paradxes inherent in being Jewish and American. We will encunter what it means t read a Jewish text, t create a Jewish ritual, t experience Jewish literature and lre in a way that makes being Jewish relevant and meaningful. Thrugh ur engagement with each ther, in class and in the field, Jewish r nn-jewish, we will better understand the diversity and pluralism inherent in the term peplehd. In an entertaining and interactive frmat, we will explre the underlying values that frm the universal and particular ways that Jews individually and cllectively express themselves in the wrld. JUS 338- R Hlcaust Histry: The Hlcaust in Histry, Film and Memrial Culture Cmbined w/ CIM 407, HIS 338 & GER 370 Instructrs: Dr. Mark Zisselberger Sectin: R: TU/TR 2:00pm-3:15pm The curse examines the representatin f the Hlcaust in histrigraphy, film, and memrial culture. Readings will include texts by histrians and writers such as Prim Levi, Raul Hilberg, Daniel Gldhagen, James Yung and thers; films will include, amng thers, Alain Resnais's NIGHT AND FOG, Claude Lanzmann's SHOAH, and Steven Spielberg's SCHINDLER'S LIST. Reading-and writing-intensive curse with reading and discussins in English. In additin t daily/weekly hmewrk assignments, an in-class midterm exam and a final, cumulative take-hme exam, students will als cmplete an extended analytical term paper. We will study Hitler's plitical aims, his Aryan superirity mythlgy, his dmestic and freign plicies, and his cnquests. Als included in this survey are the herism f Jewish resisters and gentile rescuers wh std in direct ppsitin t the silence f the Christian churches and inactivity f the nearly all natins in the face f the Jewish disaster. JUS 360- UV Hllywd and Ppular Culture: The American Jewish Experience Cmbined w/ REL 334, AMS 324 Instructrs: Dr. Henry Green Sectin: UV: Tuesday 6:35pm-9:05pm Analysis and interpretatin f the image f the Jew and the Jewish experience in American cinema, with emphasis n hw the experience and attitudes f Americans in general and the American Jewish cmmunity in particular have been reflected n the screen frm the pre-wrld War II perid until the present and n the tensin between maintaining an ethnic identity and assimilating. JUS 411- GJ Special Tpics: Human Rights and the Refugee Experence Cmbined w/ REL 409 Instructrs: Dr. Henry Green Sectin: GJ: M 3:00pm-5:40pm Since the end f Wrld War Tw, millins f peple have been displaced frm Nrth Africa and the Middle East: Cpts (Egypt), Jews (frm the Atlantic Ocean t the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers), Sunni Muslims (Lebann), Shia Muslims (Bahrain), and mst recently, Kurds and Yazidis in Iraq and in Syria peple f all stripes. Current migratin f the displaced has created a crisis in Eurpe. This curse examines the reasns why this has transpired and the plight f the refugees. Highlighting the Internatinal Declaratin f Human Rights ratified by the United Natins in the wake f the Hlcaust (1951), the curse engages students in cllecting and dcumenting the testimnies and stries f these refugees. The narratives include life in their cuntries f rigin, their stry f leaving and their experience f resettling in a new cuntry. Cre themes such as transnatinal identity, exile, diaspra, migratin and the ther are central t the curse. 11
