Key Pints The wrd Evangelical, as it is cmmnly used tday, has plitical assciatins. Hwever, its rigins are bradly Christian, describing peple wh act as messengers f gd news a practice thrugh which Gd builds, enlivens, and blesses thers thrugh ur cngregatins. Fr scial and spiritual reasns, many cngregatins have experienced slw r n grwth. But being a Christian is abut lving and blessing the wrld, letting Gd use us in spite f any dubts based n demgraphics. In large, fast-grwing cngregatins, clergy and laity see Gd as a real, active frce in their lives. Dramatic things happen when peple listen fr Gd and tell each ther hw Gd is acting in their daily lives. In these grwing cngregatins, the Bible is a framewrk fr what peple d, think, say, decide, and dream. One apprach is t read the Bible and ask, What d we hear Gd saying t us? These big cngregatins are deeply cmmitted t the priesthd f all believers. We, t, are set free t serve. The peple in these cngregatins d whatever it takes t cnnect with new peple. We, t, are free t say, Let s try it fr the sake f the gspel. Peple in these cngregatins expect things t happen, because they believe that Gd changes lives. Imagine what can happen in yur wn faith cmmunity if peple act n that belief! 2 Single-Sessin Plan The fllwing ideas suggest hw t use the Participant Handut in leading a ne-hur discussin f Reclaiming the E Wrd. Opening (3 minutes) Intrduce yurself and welcme the participants. Pray the pening prayer tgether, r invite smene t lead the prayer. Getting Started (10 minutes) Invite the participants t briefly intrduce themselves and t answer this questin: What gd news trivial r significant have yu recently heard? If the grup is large, have participants intrduce themselves and respnd t the questin within smaller grups f 4 5 peple. Pints t Pnder (45 minutes) Use questins frm the Participant Handut as a framewrk fr discussin. Questins 1 4 (10 minutes): Besides prviding basic backgrund in church vcabulary, these questins address the media s use f Evangelical t refer t grups f Christians with a fundamentalist and/r plitically right-wing utlk. Members f yur grup may r may nt share that utlk; in either case, the cntemprary understanding can bscure the riginal meaning. Fr questin 3, bring t the sessin a dictinary with a definitin f evangelical that includes mre than ne f its varied meanings. Fr example, Merriam-Webster s Cllegiate Dictinary, 11th ed., ffers 5 meanings. Fr questin 4, if yur grup includes peple wh dn t belng t a cngregatin, yu culd ask the questin abut yur grup r abut participants as individuals. Questins 5 9 (10 minutes): Yu may find the discussin mst inspiring and energizing if yu encurage the grup t fcus n what can happen when we share the gd news, rather than n the shrtcmings f the plitical scene, media messages, r yur cngregatin r natinal church. While there are certainly many shrtcmings t acknwledge, if the grup seems stuck n cmplaining, ask: What if we didn t let that stp us? What might happen if we fcused n sharing the gd news? (If the grup is wishful but puzzled abut hw t prceed, Chapters 2 6 and the Digging Deeper discussin suggestins prvide ideas fr authentic evangelism.) Fr questin 8, give participants a minute r tw t write their ideas n the handut, and then invite them t share sme f these. Questins (25 minutes): Intrduce this Bible study with Fryer s advice t avid fcusing n what Mark is saying r what they think the stry is abut r what this stry means but instead t listen fr what Gd is saying t them thrugh this biblical stry (p. 88). Then read the stry and fllw Fryer s advice by spending mst f yur time with questin 10. Sme grups may be used t having smene identify the meaning f a passage fr them; if s, be patient and encurage ideas by asking: What thughts ccurred t yu as we heard the stry? What verses r images jumped ut at yu? If time remains and the grup wants mre ideas abut the stry, questins are related t Fryer s insights n pp Her pints include that Jesus takes us t the unknwn, the ther side ; that evangelism is less abut taking Jesus t thers than abut ging with Jesus t ntice, participate in, and reprt what Gd is ding; and that the prcess isn t s scary if we have faith that Jesus will wrk miracles. Clsing (2 minutes) Nte that the clsing prayer, Psalm 117, calls n all peples t praise Gd fr Gd s faithfulness and lve smething peple can d nly if they knw abut Gd s deeds and prmises. Invite the grup t pray the clsing prayer tgether. If yu plan t cntinue the discussin f Reclaiming the E Wrd after this sessin, annunce the place and time fr the next meeting. Ask participants t prepare by reading the chapters f Reclaiming the E Wrd yu plan t cver at the next meeting. Suggestins fr subsequent discussins begin n the fllwing page, Digging Deeper.

3 Digging Deeper After wrking yur way thrugh the single-sessin plan, use the fllwing suggestins alng with the chapter questins in Reclaiming the E Wrd t dig deeper int an understanding f hw Christians can engage in authentic evangelism that blesses thers. These suggestins prvide a framewrk fr a chapter-by-chapter discussin f Reclaiming the E Wrd, thugh it s yur decisin as t hw many chapters t address each time the grup meets. Each Sessin This bk encurages peple t see Gd wrking in their lives and cngregatins and t share thse bservatins with thers. Give peple pprtunities t practice thse skills. When smene mentins being blessed r seeing Gd at wrk, ask fr details. During each sessin (perhaps befre r after an pening prayer), ask: Where have yu seen Gd at wrk, changing lives? Dn t be discuraged if participants have few ideas the first time yu ask. Remind them that Gd acts thrugh peple; that thught may inspire ideas. Als, simply because participants knw yu will ask at the next sessin, they may pay greater attentin during the time between sessins. During yur grup s prayer time, give thanks t Gd fr acting in ur lives, citing the examples mentined. This may further reinfrce the practice f seeing Gd at wrk. As participants becme mre cnfident abut sharing their stries with the grup, encurage them t share (with apprpriate cncern fr privacy issues) their stries with thers utside the grup. Each chapter f Reclaiming the E Wrd ends with a prayer under the heading Talking It Over. Use this as yur grup s clsing prayer. Chapter 1: A Wake-Up Call Frm yur cngregatin s annual reprts, cuncil secretary, r church ffice, get a histry f membership and church attendance numbers. (Fr ELCA cngregatins, yu can get numbers fr recent years nline. At the ELCA Web site, use the Find a Cngregatin link t find yur cngregatin, and then click the link t the Full Trend Reprt fr This Cngregatin.) Cmpare the statistics fr yur cngregatin (and the memries f participants) with the descriptins n pp and Ask: Has ur cngregatin been grwing, shrinking, r staying the same size? What frces in ur cmmunity might be cntributing t the trends in ur cngregatin? Nte that Gd wrks thrugh rdinary, flawed peple t lve and bless the wrld fr example, Nah had a drinking prblem (Gen 9:20-21), Mses was a fugitive because he had murdered (Exd 2:11-15), Mary was a teenager living in an ut-f-theway twn (Luke 1:26-27), and befre Paul, als named Saul, was cnverted, he was actively engaged in getting Christians arrested (Acts 8:3). Ask: Is it mst astnishing that Gd chse t wrk thrugh Nah, Mses, Mary, Paul, r yu? If yu questin whether yu are suitable fr the jb (as Mary and Mses did), can yu trust Gd t help? Read the last paragraph n p. 11, abut it being ur nature t be evangelical peple. Invite reactins. Ask: Hw accurately des this descriptin prtray this grup r ur cngregatin? If it desn t describe us, what is hlding us back? This wuld be a gd pint at which t use Fryer s Bible study abut Paul (questin 2 n p. 22). Nte that Fryer bases many f her ideas n her study f fast-grwing Lutheran churches. Read her list f five qualities shared by these cngregatins, in the first full paragraph n p. 21. Ask: Which f these qualities d yu see in ur cngregatin? Which d yu want t learn mre abut? (Nte that these are the tpics f chapters 2 6.) Chapter 2: Waking Up t the Real Deal Fryer distinguishes between knwing the faith [dctrine] and knwing Gd (feelings abut, relatinship with, experience f Gd). Ask: In yur life, when have yu made prgress in each f these areas knwing abut Gd and knwing Gd? Hw has yur faith cmmunity helped yu in each f these areas? Invite reactins t Fryer s statement In the biblical stry, Gd didn t send peple ideas. Gd sent peple (p. 27). This wuld be a gd pint at which t discuss the questins under Wrestling with the Wrd, pp Ask: When has Gd seemed real t yu fr example, when has smething happened that yu believe was frm Gd, r when have yu felt certain that Gd wuld act? Encurage participants t tell stries and prvide details. Ask: Where in these stries was Gd acting thrugh peple? When have yu cnsidered that Gd might be acting r wanting t act thrugh yu? D yu feel mre cnfident because yu believe Gd will be acting, r d yu believe the success r failure f yur effrts depends entirely n yu? Brainstrm ways that participants can develp their awareness f Gd being real in their lives and cmmunity. Recrd them n the bard r n large sheets f paper. Fr sme ideas, see pp Optin: Perhaps the grup wuld like t begin a practice f pening meetings by identifying Gd s actins and ffering prayers f thanksgiving fr them.

4 Chapter 3: Waking Up t a Vital Wrd Ask a multiple-chice questin: Hw d yu use the Bible mst weeks? (a) It sits n my shelf; (b) I read it regularly but dn t really understand it; (c) I lk up passages t find rules and guidance fr specific situatins; (d) I read it while praying that Gd will speak t me thrugh the wrds; (e) Other (hw?). The chices aren t meant t be all-inclusive but t be a discussin starter. Ntice whether the Scriptures seem t play a vital rle fr participants. Optin: Ask: D yu wish the Bible played a bigger rle in yur life? If s, what s hlding yu back frm using it mre? Invite reactins t these statements by Fryer: The Bible is nt meant t be an answer bk (p. 42); The Bible is the stry f Gd s lving missin thrughut all f histry t bless, save, set free, and recncile the whle cngregatin (pp ); What makes the Bible hly, what makes it scripture is that it pints us t Jesus Christ (p. 44); and The Bible des nt tell us what we need t knw. Rather, the Bible intrduces us t the ne wh knws us (p. 44). Fr each statement, ask: Des this sund like yur understanding f the Bible? Des thinking abut the Bible this way make it mre r less helpful? Des thinking abut the Bible this way shape hw yu want t share the gd news? Read the 3 questins Fryer prvides n p. 48 fr helping peple learn t listen fr Gd s vice thrugh the Scriptures. Ask thse questins when yu read and discuss the Bible passages given under Wrestling with the Wrd, p. 49 (Jhn 1:14; 20:1-28 and Ezekiel 2:1 3:11). Ask: Hw des answering these questins affect yu differently than asking what the passage means? Ask: When has the Bible been imprtant in shaping yur life? Referring t the examples given by participants wh have experienced the Bible as imprtant, identify situatins r spiritual practices that have set the stage fr this experience. Wrking as a grup, develp a list f ideas fr cnnecting with the Bible. Write yur list n the bard r a large sheet f paper fr all t see. Chapter 4: Waking Up t a Purpseful Life Have everyne lk at the illustratin f arrws n p. 58 and read the captin, r draw the arrws n the bard r a large sheet f paper and review what each arrw signifies. Ask: Hw d we express this summary f ur faith in ur wrship? Hw d we live it ut in ur Bible studies? In ur persnal lives? Ask: Hw is being set free t lve different frm being required by Gd t lve in rder t be saved? Have yu experienced Gd s call t serve mre as gspel (set free) r as law (a requirement)? Read Ams 5:21-24 (ptin: fr sme cntext, als read verses 10-13) and Matthew 23: Ask: What is Gd saying t yu in these passages tday? Cmpare the grup s bservatins with Fryer s paragraph n pp Ask: In ur faith cmmunity, hw d we serve thers? Hw d we invite peple t serve? Hw d we share stries abut the experience? Des what we say sund mre like we are burdened with bligatins r mre like we have been set free? Chapter 5: Waking Up t Our Cmmn Call Ask: When has welcming a new persn int yur life caused yu t make changes? Hw were the changes hard? Hw were yu blessed by them? (Yu might want t be prepared with examples, such as the changes that cme with falling in lve, getting married, giving birth r adpting, fstering a child, mentring a new emplyee, hsting an exchange student, r receiving new members at yur church.) This chapter encurages us t accept the challenges that cme with exchanging ld traditins fr new ways f welcming peple; it may be helpful t remember that welcming new peple als can bring blessings, even as we bless thers. Read Exdus 20:8-11. Ask: When wuld the Sabbath be a blessing? Invite the grup t imagine examples f situatins in which smene wuld welcme the Sabbath. (Fr example, if we are exhausted frm hard wrk, being tld t rest is a blessing.) Perhaps sme participants have a practice f hnring the Sabbath; if s, include their stries in yur discussin. Ask: When might hnring the Sabbath be a burden? (In general, these situatins wuld arise when a fcus n the rules distracts peple frm caring fr ur needs, such as a need fr healing.) Again invite examples. Read Mark 2:23 3:5. Remind the grup that hnring the Sabbath was nt nly a central law but als a belved traditin fr many peple. Ask: What was Jesus fcusing n in these situatins? What d his cncerns and actins tell yu? What Christian traditins are belved t yu? When culd they interfere with serving ur neighbrs? What shuld we d in thse situatins? Ask: In what ways d (r dn t) yur cngregatin s wrship services prmte faith? In what ways d (r dn t) the wrship services prmte the service f lve? In what ways d (r dn t) they welcme new peple int yur faith cmmunity? Is it time fr yur cngregatin t try smething new? If s, what is Gd calling yu t try? If yu dn t knw, hw can yu find ut? Fr example, d yu need t ntice wh is nt there? (Wh might that be?) Chapter 6: Waking Up t Transfrmatinal Pwer Open by praying the Lrd s Prayer, r read Matthew 6:9-13. Ask: When yu pray, Yur kingdm cme, yur will be dne, what are yu expecting frm Gd? Fr yu, is this wishful thinking, a firm expectatin, r smething in between? D yu expect Gd s will and kingdm here and nw r ff in the future, maybe in anther place? Read r review Fryer s descriptin

5 f Gd s kingdm, starting with the last paragraph n p. 79 and cntinuing with the 2 paragraphs that fllw. Ask: Hw des this descriptin cmpare with yur wn ideas? Ask: D yu expect t witness Gd s wrk in the wrld, r is it smething yu dubt r ignre? If sme participants d witness Gd at wrk in the wrld, explre hw they bserve this. Invite them t suggest ways fr thers t pay attentin and see Gd at wrk. Ask: What miracles have yu witnessed r heard thers tell abut? T what extent d members f yur faith cmmunity share these stries? Hw wuld the cmmunity be affected if the stries were widely shared? (Or hw is the cmmunity affected if the stries are shared?) If the grup can t think f miracles, ask: Is Gd nt at wrk in ur cmmunity, r are we nt nticing? In the New Testament, when Jesus met peple, they were changed. Try asking in a different way: Hw is Gd changing yur life r the lives f peple arund yu? Or hw is Gd wrking thrugh peple t change ur cmmunity? If n changes are ccurring, ask: Are we meeting Jesus? If nt, why nt? If s, why aren t we letting him change us? Brainstrm a list f prblems participants are cncerned abut in this grup, their cngregatin, their cmmunity, and the wrld; recrd them n the bard r large sheets f paper. Then ask the questin psed by Fryer n p. 85: If we dare t fllw Jesus t the crssrads and d what it is we are suppsed t d, as peple wh have been called t participate in Gd s lving missin t save and recncile and bless the whle wrld, what will be different? Referring t the items n yur list f prblems, create a list f headlines that might appear in the newspaper n r TV newscasts as peple get invlved in fllwing Jesus. Ask: Wuld yu be excited t share news like this? If Gd is truly at wrk in the wrld, what wuld yu risk t be part f that? What wuld yu gain?
