2 INTRODUCTION A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAR MITZVAH AND BAT MITZVAH Mazel Tv! We at Temple Emanuel are pleased t help yu usher in this special time in the life f yur family. The terms Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah, which mean "sn" r "daughter f the cmmandments," refer t the bligatins f Jewish adulthd. The Bar Mitzvah r Bat Mitzvah ritual, which symblizes the transitin frm childhd t respnsible adulthd within the Jewish cmmunity, riginated during the Middle Ages. Upn reaching the age f 13, bys demnstrated their knwledge f Trah by chanting the week's parsha and presenting an interpretatin- a d'var Trah- f that text. This rite f passage was extended t include girls in 1922, when Rabbi Mrdecai Kaplan, the funder f Recnstructinist Judaism, presided ver the first religius Bat Mitzvah ceremny fr his 12- year-ld daughter Judith. We have cmpiled the infrmatin in this bklet fr yu and yur family with the gal f enhancing the experience and meaning f becming a Bar Mitzvah r Bat Mitzvah. We hpe that yu will all read this bklet carefully and keep it fr future reference. REFLECTIONS As I walked up t the pdium t recite the prayers t welcme Shabbat, I culd feel my heart punding and feared it wuld explde thrugh my chest. My palms were sweaty. My head was spinning... When I finally started, my nervusness eased. In fact, I felt gd! The results f lng, hard, tedius hurs f study were being shwn ff in frnt f a few hundred peple wh lked like a few millin peple t a jittery 13-year-ld girl. Fr five years, I had studied Jewish histry and prayers, learned t read Hebrew, and t chant Trah and Haftarah. I cnstantly cmplained abut hw hrrible it was. But up n the bimah, I realized that every minute f study and practice had been wrth it. Standing there, reading the stries my ancestrs have been reading fr thusands f years, I felt imprtant and special. It was exciting t read the ancient language f my peple in the sacred Trah. On the day f my Bat Mitzvah service, I vwed never t stp seeking mre knwledge and t always keep Jewish traditins alive. T this day, I still read Trah and take classes in Jewish studies. 3 The Bar r Bat Mitzvah "rite f passage" includes nt nly the mastery f technical skills needed n Shabbat mrning, but als an inner transfrmatin in which an individual becmes a full member f the cmmunity. T achieve this in a meaningful way, we ask ur students and their families t make a number f cmmitments. These include: Jewish Educatin BAR AND BAT MITZVAH RESPONSIBLILITES Cmpletin f grades K thrugh 5 f the Rabbi Albert I. Grdn Religius Schl and 6 th and 7 th grade Makr Prgram r ther accredited religius schl r Grades K thrugh 7 in a Jewish Day Schl. Active participatin in ur 6 th grade Jin the Jewish Cnversatin prgram. See page 7 fr details. Participatin in a Judaic studies prgram during the 7 th Grade. This includes Day Schl students. If yur Day Schl student has left in 6 th grade, he r she must be enrlled in anther Judaic studies prgram (Temple Emanuel 7 th grade r Przdr) fr the 7 th grade year. Regular attendance at weekly private instructin with a Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutr. Students are expected t review and practice assigned materials n a daily basis. Tefillah (Prayer Service) Requirement 1 year prir t the child's Bar/Bat Mitzvah date (usually during the 6 th grade year) Attendance at five Kabbalat Shabbat Services (Friday night) at Temple Emanuel, either in the Gann Chapel r Shabbat Alive. Attendance at eight Shabbat mrning services at Temple Emanuel. If yur child is celebrating a Shabbat mincha Bar r Bat Mitzvah, attendance at eight Shabbat mincha services. Attendance at five Sunday mrning services (8:00 am) r any Shacharit (mrning) service at Temple Emanuel when tefillin are wrn. Please mark when yur child attends services by clicking n this link: During the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year: Attendance at the mrning minyan usually at 7:00 am, n either the Mnday r Thursday f the week immediately preceding the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. At that time, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah will have the hnr f Gelilah (wrapping the Trah). 3

4 INSTRUCTION Temple Emanuel's experienced and prfessinal Bar/Bat Mitzvah staff members, Hazzan Elias Rsemberg, Hazzan Sheni Daniel Nessn, Hazzan Stephen Thmpsn, Jnathan Tatelman, and Ruth Tepper, are all knwledgeable in Ta'amei Hamikrah (Trah and Haftarah cantillatin). Our tutrs are als highly qualified t wrk with yur child in preparing them t lead Friday night and weekday services. Yu can expect t receive a call frm ne f ur tutrs apprximately 12 mnths befre the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. Our students have weekly lessns that last fr abut 30 minutes. Trah and Haftarah blessings: Each Bar r Bat Mitzvah is called t the Trah fr an aliyah. Lessns begin with the mastery f the blessings that are chanted befre and after each reading frm the Trah. If the Bar r Bat Mitzvah is celebrated n Shabbat mrning, the student will als master the blessings that are chanted befre and after the Haftarah reading. Haftarah: Next, students will fcus n learning the Haftarah fr the Shabbat f the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. The Haftarah is a selectin frm the Prphets sectin f the Bible. Each Shabbat has its wn Haftarah, which is related in sme way t the week's Trah reading. There is a traditinal system f cantillatin, knwn as Ta'amei Hamikrah, r "trpe," fr chanting ur sacred texts. Students will learn t recgnize the symbls, hw t sing them, and hw t apply them t the Haftarah. Trah reading: Once students have made cnsiderable prgress learning the Haftarah, they will learn t read frm the Trah. Each Bar and Bat Mitzvah is called t the Trah fr the Maftir aliyah, the last aliyah befre the reading f the Haftarah. Each student will learn t chant the Maftir verses f the Trah prtin fr the Shabbat f the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. Once the Maftir verses have been mastered, students may prepare ne r tw additinal aliyt. Parents and lder siblings are als welcme t read an aliyah frm the Trah if there are additinal readings available n the Shabbat f the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. T arrange fr this, please speak with the student's Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutr. Shabbat Mincha Bar/Bat Mitzvah: If yur child is celebrating a Shabbat Mincha Bar/Bat Mitzvah, he r she will be instructed in Trah blessings, Trah cantillatin, and as prayer leaders fr this service. We encurage yur entire family t study the meaning f the text with the Bar r Bat Mitzvah student. Our staff is available t help yu. Please see the resurce guide n page 16 fr a list f texts that will be helpful. We encurage all ur children t celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah at a Shabbat mrning service. Please nte that Mincha B nei Mitzvah are nt available as an ptin fr every child. If yu feel yur child's situatin requires a Mincha service, please schedule a meeting with Rabbi Wes Gardenswartz t discuss yur child s circumstances. 5 D VAR TORAH Each student prepares a shrt speech r D 'var Trah fr his r her Bar r Bat Mitzvah. The purpse f this D 'var Trah is tw-fld: t help the Bar r Bat Mitzvah student develp an understanding f the Trah and Haftarah prtins, and t enable the Bar r Bat Mitzvah t share his r her insights with the cngregatin. Each student will prepare a D 'var Trah individually with ne f ur cngregatinal rabbis, wh will call yu t begin this prcess apprximately three mnths befre the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. We encurage parents t engage in the study f these texts with their children. As yu (the Bar r Bat Mitzvah student) plan yur D 'var Trah, please keep the fllwing guidelines in mind. Length: The text f yur D 'var Trah must be ne t ne-and-a-half pages lng, typed duble-spaced. That's apprximately wrds. Other texts: Fcus yur interpretatins n the Trah r Haftarah text, but please d refer t ther texts f ur traditin as well. Terminlgy: The talks shuld be inclusive f the entire cngregatin. Therefre, the Trah and Haftarah prtins shuld be referred t as "this week's Haftarah" r "this week's Trah prtin." Nt as "my Trah prtin" r "my Haftarah". Fcus: Yur D 'var Trah is yur pprtunity t teach the entire cngregatin abut the Trah r the Haftarah prtin. We therefre ask yu t remain fcused n the prtin itself and save yur persnal thanks r acknwledgements fr yur celebratins after the services. TEFILLIN An imprtant part f ur Bar and Bat Mitzvah prgram is the mitzvah f tefillin. Bth bys and girls will learn hw t put n tefillin and t daven as part f their preparatin fr this significant mment in their life, and that f yur family. In putting n tefillin, ur children will: Learn hw t unite their head, their hand, and their heart t d Gd's wrk in the wrld. Becme mindful f their intellectual, their physical, and their emtinal strengths, and what happens when these are cmbined fr a nble purpse larger than themselves. We strngly encurage all ur B nei Mitzvah bth bys and girls t take n the mitzvah f tefillin, and are happy t rder tefillin fr yur child! 6 SERVICE PARTICIPATION Temple Emanuel is a singing, participatry cngregatin. We seek t instill this apprach t wrship in all ur cngregants, especially ur B'nei Mitzvah. Shabbat mrning services: During the year f preparatin fr the Bar r Bat Mitzvah Shabbat, yur family shuld attend Shabbat services as ften as pssible. As we nted n page 3, we require ur B'nei Mitzvah t attend n fewer than eight times during the year prir t their Bat/Bar Mitzvah. We strngly urge yur family t attend weekly during this time. We have fund that the mre students and their families feel "at hme" in the synaggue and the mre familiar they are with the prayers and service structure, the mre meaningful they find their wn persnal simcha. Furthermre, thse students wh develp a familiarity with the service learn their material with greater ease, and they experience less anxiety as they anticipate their special Shabbat. Students will be able t lead the Shacharit service with the Cantr n Shabbat mrning. Shabbat Mrning Bk Presentatin: Our cngregatin presents each pre-b nai Mitzvah child with a cpy f the bk Fr Kids: Putting Gd n the Guest List at a Shabbat mrning services when the student is in 6th grade. This bk serves as a resurce t each pre-b nai Mitzvah family as yu g thrugh this preparatin prcess. This year we invite yur family t Shabbat services n Saturday, Nvember 19, 2016 where yur child will receive this bk. Daily Shacharit services: As nted n page 3, yu shuld plan t attend five Sunday mrning (8:00 am) minyanim, and t attend the Mnday r Thursday mrning (7:00 am) minyan the week befre the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. At the Shacharit services the week f becming Bar r Bat Mitzvah, students will put n talit and tefillin with the cmmunity, and will be called up fr the hnr f Gelilah (wrapping the Trah). At this time, the B'nei Mitzvah will be presented with a special Minyan Membership Card. Friday night services: As nted n page 3, yu shuld plan t attend five Kabbalat Shabbat services at Temple Emanuel. B'nei Mitzvah wh have cmpletely mastered the Shabbat mrning blessings, the Haftarah, and the Trah readings, may als lead the Friday night service in the Gann Chapel. If yu think yu'd like t d this, let the tutr knw early in the year f preparatin. Students wishing t lead Friday Night Services are als required t attend Erev Shabbat services regularly with their families during the three mnths preceding the Bar r Bat Mitzvah Shabbat. Students will be able t lead the Friday night service in the Gann Chapel, r lead the Kiddush at Shabbat Alive Services. Every effrt shuld be made t attend the special type f service in which yu and yur family will be celebrating the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Cntinued invlvement: We encurage B'nei Mitzvah t cntinue their invlvement in services by reading Trah at ur Mnday and Thursday mrning daily minyan, Shabbat, High Hly Days, and/r festival services. Thse B'nei Mitzvah wh have learned the evening services are als invited t cme lead services as ften as they wuld like. Greeters: One universal cmment frm ur guests is hw warm, welcming and wnderful Temple Emanuel is when they attend services. One f the ways the shul accmplishes this is thrugh engaging ur members as Shabbat mrning greeters. Just as yur guests will be welcmed int the shul n yur special day, parents can "PAY IT FORWARD" by greeting n a Shabbat mrning t. Greeters arrive arund 9:15 am and greet until 10:45 am. As a greeter yu are the welcming face f Temple Emanuel and can d this alne r ask smene t jin yu. Greeters help direct guests and cngregants t where they might need t g, handing ut the 6

7 weekly Shabbat pamphlet and facilitating active participatin in the service. We wuld really appreciate if each family wuld vlunteer prir t their child s Bar/Bat Mitzvah. FAMILY INVOLVEMENT DURING THE BAR/BAT MITZVAH PREPARATORY YEAR -ALL 6 th GRADERS & THEIR PARENTS (RELIGIOUS & DAY SCHOOL) We encurage yur family t enhance yur psitive Jewish identity and cnnectin t ur Jewish past, present, and future by participating fully in the fllwing activities: JOIN THE JEWISH CONVERSATION I. Jin the Jewish Cnversatin will be a place t start a rich cnversatin between parents and children, amng families anticipating the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year, and a way t reinfrce the message that the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is nt abut ne day, but abut the learning and deepened cmmitment befre and after the special day. Grups f 4-5 families will meet tgether fr 4 sessins, facilitated by a leader/ educatr. Each sessin will begin with a cmmunity meal fr all participants befre breaking up int smaller grups fr an hur f TORAH and cnversatin! THE 4 SESSIONS OF JOIN THE JEWISH CONVERSATION: Sunday mrnings: January 8, 22, 29 and February 5, 2017, 9-11 am II. AVODAH (Prayer/ Wrship): SHABBATON! Saturday, Nvember 19, 2016 at 9:30 am t 8:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel Families enjy an all-day Shabbatn just fr 6 th graders, parents, and staff! This is an pprtunity t create a sacred time and space where ur 6 th graders experience the jy f Shabbat, get t knw each ther better, and have fun cnnecting with ne anther thrugh drama, sprts, services, singing, games, and meals. We will begin t think mre deeply abut the reasns fr becming a Bar r Bat Mitzvah and what success will really lk like. III. G MILUT HASSIDIM: SHARED ENERGY FOR TIKKUN OLAM! This is ur prgram fr hw we d mitzvah prjects. The psalms teach us, the mre peple, the mre energy. Wrking tgether, we ften accmplish mre than when we wrk alne. Each B nei Mitzvah will jin a grup, meeting 6-8 times during the year, and wrk tgether n a 7

8 mitzvah prject that is persnally and cmmunally meaningful. We rganize a number f grup mitzvah prjects that include sme f the fllwing themes: Mipnei Seivah Takum/ Respect fr ur Elderly: Intergeneratinal dialgue and relatinship-building with senirs Tza ar Ba alei Chayim/ Cncern fr all Living Things: Wrk with animals in need Ma achil Re evim/ Feed the Hungry: Serve at Fd Pantry Bikkur Chlim/ Visiting the sick Kl Yisrael Arevim Zeh BaZeh/ All Jews are respnsible fr ne anther The Living Legacy Prject A living legacy is a parent's persnal statement that expresses what is mst imprtant and meaningful in yur life, where yu have std and what yu stand fr. It is an ancient Jewish traditin t pass n persnal values and blessings t future generatins. Yur living legacy is a persnal gift t members f yur family. It may be kept private r shared in an apprpriate setting. It is especially meaningful t share living legacies at imprtant milestnes in family life such as a Bar r Bat Mitzvah. Bth parents and students are strngly encuraged t pause during this year and reflect n what has brught yu t this mment. Yu may begin writing a Living Legacy 12 mnths prir, cntinuing up t yur date. ALIYOT AND HONORS Relatives and friends that yur family wuld like t hnr may participate in ur Shabbat service in a number f ways. Regardless f the number f B'nei Mitzvah n any given Shabbat mrning, each family is entitled t three aliyt (ne f these three aliyt is set aside fr the parents), tw hnrs, and f curse, an aliyah fr the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. Family members that are nt Jewish, may perfrm the hnr f pening the ark, r t recite the Prayer fr the Cuntry. T maintain the sanctity and dignity f ur Shabbat services, we require that every persn called t the Trah fr an aliyah be able t recite the Trah blessings accurately. Please see page 17 fr the text f the Trah blessings bth in Hebrew and in transliteratin. A recrding f the blessings are available nline r by cntacting ur Ritual Directr, Dan Nessn. Please see pages f this bklet, where yu will find an Hnrs frm apprpriate t the service fr yur Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebratin. Cmplete the apprpriate frm and return it t Tessa Amantiad a mnth prir t the B nei Mitzvah. On this frm, indicate the name and relatinship f each individual yu wish t recgnize with an aliyah r ther hnr. Please make sure that yur guests wh will be receiving hnrs identify themselves t the ushers at the back f the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary immediately upn arrival fr services. 8

9 FAMILY REHEARSAL At 4:00 r 4:30 pm n the Thursday immediately preceding the Shabbat f the Bar r Bat Mitzvah, yur entire family will meet with ur Rabbis. At 5:00 pm, families will prceed t the Rabbi Samuel Chiel Sanctuary where yu will review the service with Hazzan Sheni Dan Nessn: what happens, when it happens, and wh participates. At that time each element f the services is rehearsed in detail: the Trah readings, D 'var trah, Haftarah, the Kiddush, and Mtzi. This will als be yur pprtunity t review the assignment f aliyt and hnrs. The rehearsal usually takes abut an hur. In the event that the Thursday prir t yur simcha is either a secular hliday r Jewish Hly Day, the rehearsal and meeting will be rescheduled t accmmdate all parties. If yu are celebrating a weekday r Shabbat Mincha Bar/Bat Mitzvah, please cntact Tessa Amantiad t schedule yur rehearsal. PHOTOGRAPHS, FILMING, AND HANDHELD DEVICES In adherence with the laws f Shabbat, Temple Emanuel des nt permit any phtgraphy/videgraphy r the use f handheld devices in ur synaggue r surrunding grunds n Shabbat. In additin, in rder t maintain the sanctity f weekday and Rsh Hdesh services the synaggue als des nt permit phtgraphy/videgraphy during these services. Please infrm yur guests prir t yur simcha. Yur best pprtunity t take phts is n the Thursday f yur rehearsal. Schedule yur phtgraphy sessin t take place either befre meeting with the Rabbis r after the cnclusin f the rehearsal. It is critical that yur family be able t fcus during the rehearsal, therefre, phts may nt be taken at that time. Please call Erin Mseley, at the synaggue ffice t bk a specific time. She will make sure that the sanctuary will be pen and the Trah available. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS Temple Emanuel's staff will d everything pssible t ensure the smth functining f yur simcha. We have established the fllwing guidelines t ensure the harmnius and equitable use f ur facilities. If yu have any questins, please call Erin Mseley. Fees: All fees have been determined by Temple Emanuel's Budget Cmmittee and apprved by the Bard f Directrs and the Cngregatin. The fees that fllw are current as f publicatin, but they are subject t peridic change. Temple Emanuel requires that all fees and rental charges be paid in full befre the Shabbat f the Bar r Bat Mitzvah. If yu have a cncern r questin regarding this deadline fr payment, cntact Jill Matusw, Directr f Finance at t wrk ut a mutually satisfactry payment schedule. The President f Temple Emanuel is the nly persn authrized t make adjustments t dues r fees. The summer preceding the simcha, yur membership bill will include a Bar/Bat Mitzvah fee f $1,550 payable ver tw years ($775 1 st yr), ($275 2 nd yr & $500/Kiddush spnsrship.) The Kiddush spnsrship is tax deductible fr the persn wh pays this, all families are respnsible fr the spnsrship fee regardless f a mincha r shabbat mrning service. 9

10 Tefillin fee: Parents shuld plan t purchase a set f tefillin and a tefillin bag (apprximately $200) via the synaggue during the 6 th grade year. T purchase tefillin via the synaggue please cntact Terri Swartz Russell, Family Educatr, r purchase in ur synaggue Lang Judaica Shp. Renting space fr yur simcha: In mst cases, subject t certain restrictins, the Adelsn Cmmunity Hall, Reisman Hall, Benjamin Vestry, and Leventhal-Sidman Cmmunity Curt are available fr rent. Please remember that Temple Emanuel hsts many s macht, s events reservatins are made n a first-cme, first-serve basis. Please cntact Erin Mseley at t discuss renting space fr yur simcha. The rental perids fr each f these spaces fr the afternn are 12:00 nn t 3:00 p.m. and fr the evening frm after the end f Mincha services t 12:00 midnight. Yur evening party may nt begin until after Shabbat services and Shabbat has ended. Yu must check with Erin Mseley, wh will tell yu when yu may start yur festivities. She can give yu current rental fee infrmatin and answer any f yur questins. Rules and Regulatins fr Events: These dcuments can be fund n the synaggue's website under "Plan Yur Event". CATERING Our Main Kitchen, which may be used fr either fleishig (meat) r milchig (dairy) meals, serves the Adelsn Cmmunity Hall, Reisman Hall and the Benjamin Vestry. It is imprtant t nte that n mre than ne apprved ksher catering rganizatin can use the kitchen at ne time. Furthermre, the caterer may nt serve bth fleishig and milchig at the same time. These restrictins require that when there are simultaneus functins (in the afternn r evening), bth parties must engage the same caterer and bth meals must be either fleishig r milchig. The menus need nt be the same. There are n menu cnstrictins n sequential events: mrning/afternn dairy meals may be fllwed by evening meat meals, and vice versa, hwever, the same apprved ksher caterer must be used fr the whle day. Erin Mseley can supply yu with a list f apprved caterers. Additinally, there is a current list f apprved ksher caterers n ur website under "Plan Yur Event". SPONSORING THE CONGREGATIONAL KIDDUSH The Shabbat mrning pamphlet highlights the name(s) f the c-spnsrs f the Cngregatinal Kiddush. It will include yur names (Bar/Bat Mitzvah parents and Bar/Bat Mitzvah) as well as the names f thse wh are c-spnsring the Kiddush t celebrate ther special events such as baby namings, aufrufs, special anniversaries, r ther s'macht taking place n that Shabbat. This is an pprtunity fr yu t share yur simcha with the entire cngregatin, even if yu are entertaining yur guests at a private receptin. Any number f families may spnsr the Kiddush. 11 SHABBAT OBSERVANCE AT TEMPLE EMANUEL Please familiarize yurself with these very imprtant and mandatry plicies f Temple Emanuel, and be sure t infrm yur guests abut them. Invitatins: Please make sure that yur invitatins state the crrect starting time fr services. Shabbat mrning services at Temple Emanuel always begin at 9:30 am. Events may nly start after Shabbat r the hliday and the services have ended.
