4 On Speaking Plainly Rabbi Ari Lamm, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern The holy grail of political debate is to catch one s opponent in an error. The stakes in this respect have always been high, but in the digital age when LexisNexis can expose in seconds any past miscalculations pundits across the political spectrum have taken to couching predictions in such vague terms that no mistake in the exact, technical sense can ever subsequently be identified, no matter the outcome. It was therefore striking to read Ross Douthat s recent column in the Times, in which he assessed his worst mistaken predictions of the year. Referring to one such bit of forecasting he wrote: Technically that column didn t make any predictions, but it radiated an optimism that turned out to be unwarranted. Generally, radiating a mood is not subject to fact-checking. In fact, for that very reason it is utilized in lieu of making actual, falsifiable predictions as a way for pundits and politicians to wriggle out of responsibility for being mistaken. A point of view may be very strongly implied, but if there is no hard commitment, the thinking goes, there need be no risk of being caught in an error. It is refreshing, therefore, to see a columnist acknowledge a mistake made by implication. Would that more pundits indeed, more of us among the general population either take ownership of these sorts of mistakes, or alternatively resolve from now on to say precisely what we mean. An excellent example of inspiringly frank leadership appears in this week s sidra. As the Jewish people, fleeing Egypt, contemplate their impending doom on the banks of the Yam Suf, Moshe delivers the following note of encouragement: And Moshe said unto the people: 'Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will work for you today; for whereas you have seen the Egyptians today, you shall never see them again. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace. (Exodus 14:13-4) Moshe makes no attempt to cover himself, to allow himself an avenue of escape should he prove wrong. Instead he confidently asserts his claim: the Jewish people need not fear, for God will rescue them; indeed, moreover, God will destroy the Egyptians such that they will never again through all of history trouble the Jewish people. These were bold predictions to be sure. Moshe s entire career, in fact, hinged upon whether these claims would be borne out. Perhaps he might have been better off hedging his bet, making some nebulous claim to the effect that surely God had reason not to abandon his people, or perhaps He will provide salvation. But instead, as Moshe knew, a leader a person who hopes to earn the respect and admiration of those who follow him must always speak plainly to those whom he would lead. 6 JCU Winter Semester Class Descriptions For more information, contact Rabbi Zirkind at 39 Melachot: Theory and Practice, Rabbi Dovid Zirkind The 39 Melachot are the framework through which we observe Shabbat each week. Join us as we continue our analysis of the melachot one by one, with a focus on their Talmudic origins and practical applications. This year we will begin with the Melacha of Borer - separating. Advanced Talmud Chabura, Rabbi Daniel Fridman This year we will be studying the Jewish laws of mourning, from the Talmud through the Rishonim and the major Poskim, utilizing a topical approach. Ancient Jewish History: Judaism & the Origins of Christianity, Rabbi Ari Lamm, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern Christian thinkers long saw, in the first few centuries C.E. the birth of Christianity and the death of covenantal Judaism. Jews have traditionally viewed this very same period as a golden age during which Rabbinic culture flourished. Through close readings of primary texts, we will critically examine these and other perspectives, as we take stock of an era that fundamentally shaped Jewish history, world history and the very definition of avodat Hashem., Rotating JCU Faculty Nosh and Drash, Adena Berkowitz Join us for this weekly Parsha shiur focusing on the intellectual and spiritual insights from the Torah. For women only. Rabbi Silverstein Mishnayot Class, Rabbi Yosie Levine A freewheeling discussion of Jewish law and custom. This year we are studying Mesechet Sanhedrin. Sefer HaMitzvot, Rabbi Daniel Fridman Taught during Hashkama Kiddush every Shabbat morning, this highly participatory class uses the classic Torah commentary of Nachmanides as a jumping-off point for an in-depth discussion of Jewish law and its developments. Topics relate to the weekly Parsha, as well as to pertinent contemporary halachic issues. The Sixth Sense, Rabbi Dovid Zirkind Every sense and skill of the human body is involved in religious life; what we wear, what eat, what we smell and what hear. This course explores the philosophy and halachic ramifications of sensory impairment deafness, blindness, amputation and other physical impediments - on daily functioning and religious life. The Works and Wonders of Elisha: The Sadye and Henry Bayer Tanach Class, Rabbi Yosie Levine The student and disciple of the great Elijah, Elisha was a prophet who carved out his own identity and his own place in the annals of Jewish history. By exploring the Biblical world which he inhabited, we will endeavor to more deeply understand his eternal legacy. No previous prophetic experience necessary. Women of the Bible, Rabbi Yosie Levine Now immersed in the book of Exodus, this series explores the lives and legacies of the women of the Bible. Through close textual readings and exploration of the classic Biblical commentaries, this class for women will attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the characters we know so well.
