4 The Chatam Sofer s Third Way Rabbi Ari Lamm, William Fischman Resident Scholar In the wake of the recent earthquake in Nepal, Israel s staggering humanitarian aid effort has received global attention. Much of it has been dedicated to sussing out the politico-strategic implications of Israel s contribution to the disaster relief. Does it demonstrate, once and for all, that the callous Israel often featured in the media is a cartoonish farce, or on the more paranoid reading does it perhaps reflect some deeply cynical diplomatic tactic designed to distract from Israeli cruelty? Is there, perhaps, a third, alternative interpretation of Israel s actions? The answer, to my mind, lies with the Chatam Sofer. In propounding a rationale for this past week s observance, Lag ba- Omer, the Chatam Sofer ( ) advances the following claim: The falling of the manna took place on the 33 rd day of the Omer and it is fitting that such should be remembered for the good. (Responsa Yoreh De ah 233). Whatever its historical merits, this explanation certainly strikes a moral chord. Hearing the cries of His starving people, God, in His beneficence, miraculously provided them with food. Lag ba- Omer, then, is a celebration of God s kindness in times of crisis. This is a paid advertisement Upon closer examination, however, the episode of the man is actually a far more complicated affair. In the first place, the Israelites were not starving, per se. Rather, they were lamenting their absence from the fleshpots of Egypt Egypt! where they ate their fill of meat and bread (Ex 16.3). Despite this incomprehensible ingratitude to the Redeemer who freed them from slavery, God, recognizing the fragile psyche of these newly-freed slaves, enhanced the people s diet. He merely commanded that no one take more than his or her share, and that the Israelites at least respect the sanctity of the Sabbath by refraining from gathering on that day. But even these simple instructions the people were unprepared to heed. No sooner had the man fallen than some of the people began to gather more than the prescribed amount; and no sooner had Shabbos arrived than others ventured out to gather more man. And even setting aside this casual insubordination, the people offer to God not a word of thanks. Had God expected even a perfunctory congratulation, He would have been sorely disappointed. But the truth is that God did not provide man in expectation of praise what need has the Almighty of beatification? but rather because He is the Ozer Dalim, the One Who Aids the Destitute. God sustained His People throughout their sojourn in the desert, despite their lack of appreciation, for no other reason than it was ontologically good and right to do so. It is this uncompromising, objective commitment to righteousness that we commemorate on Lag ba- Omer. In a similar vein, we celebrate the State of Israel s unparalleled kindness towards the people of Nepal not because it is politically convenient because it better serves the interest of more effective public relations in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And conversely shame on those who look upon Israeli goodness and see only cynical manipulation. Our brethren in the Land of Israel help others because and I am convinced that this is, in fact, the reality the Jewish People see it as nothing less than their sacred calling to help those in need; because we are a people charged with imitating the Divine. And just as God tended the needs of Israel without hope or expectation of adulation, so does Israel tend to the needs of all those who require it. Dr. Adena Berkowitz initially came to The Jewish Center to say kaddish for her father in 2008, but since then, she and her family have become an integral part of the shul. Adena teaches a weekly Tuesday morning Parsha class - Nosh and Drash - that attracts women from across the demographic spectrum. The annual Chanukah shiur, Tu B Shevat Seder, Pre-Pesach Shiur and Post-Pesach Challah Bake, run in conjunction with Kol HaNeshamah, which she co-founded, have all become occasions to share Torah thoughts, good food, and spiritual food for the soul. A member of The Jewish Center for eleven years, Michelle Chrein has served as the journal chair for our annual dinner and on the Administrative Committee of The Jewish Center. She is The Jewish Center s representative for Food Funnel, an organization that picks up and delivers leftover bread to the needy. She s in regular contact with synagogue members, encouraging their support for a variety of initiatives such as sponsoring kiddush and replenishing the synagogue s supply of chumashim and siddurim.
