4 Collective Punishment in Parshat Korach? Rabbi Eliezer Buechler, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern After Korach, Datan, Aviram and their associates stirred up trouble in the Israelite camp, God turned to Moshe and Aaron with the following instruction. Separate yourselves from this community so that I may annihilate them at once (Bamidbar 16:21). There are two ways in which we can read this verse, and specifically the word edah, or community. A cursory reading leads one to conclude that God is about to wipe out Korach, Datan, Aviram and their 250 followers. The Ramban disagrees, however, with this interpretation of the word edah, and puts forth his own understanding of this verse. God isn t stating that He will destroy just the troublemakers in this verse; rather, God is ready to destroy the entire nation of Israel. This leads us to the important question as to how it can be that God would punish the entire Jewish people for the sins of a small minority? This is the question that the Ramban sought to answer. If we look back just two verses we can better understand the answer that the Ramban will give for his query. In Bamidbar 16:19, Korach gathers the entire community, kol ha-edah, in front of the entrance to the Mishkan to witness the showdown that is about to take place between HIM and his followers, and Moshe and Aaron. This edah includes every Jew in the wilderness. Therefore, two verses later, God is ready to destroy the same edah, i.e. the entire nation. Now that we understand the textual comparison that led the Ramban to his question, why is it that the entire nation is guilty in the eyes of God along with Korach? If you can imagine the scene for a moment, we have Moshe, Aaron, Korach and his followers up front, and the rest of the nation behind them looking on. The Ramban explains that the sin of the nation was their willingness to believe that Korach could be right. This led the people to gather before the entrance of the Mishkan to see whether Moshe and Aaron s leadership could be successfully challenged. Moshe and Aaron didn t gather the nation in order to make an example of a rebellious person, rather the rebel himself was able to encourage the entire nation to come and watch the show that he was about to put on. This was the sin of the nation: their willingness to believe in the possibility that Korach could defeat the greatest prophet and Kohen Gadol. What is incredible, however, is that although the nation was liable to receive the death penalty by God, Moshe and Aaron beseeched God and said When one man sins, will You be wrathful with the entire nation? (Bamidbar 16:22). God then responds by reformulating his command to destroy the entire nation by stating that the nation should remove themselves from Korach, Datan and Aviram, and that only the instigators would be punished, not the nation. Moshe and Aaron s ability to pray and request for God s utmost rachamim for the Jewish people is emblematic of what it means to be a leader. I SRAEL UPDATE June 15, 2018 Shin Bet says 250 significant terror attacks thwarted since January The head of the Shin Bet security service on Wednesday announced that his organization had foiled some 250 significant terror attacks since January, crediting this achievement in part to hightech surveillance and tracking tools, the Times of Israel noted. Nadav Argaman, who has led the Shin Bet since 2016, noted the changing security threats in Israel and the West Bank, away from more organized terror groups and toward so-called lone wolf attacks by unaffiliated individuals. The map of threats and challenges is varied and covers multiple unstable and difficult fronts, he said. Since the start of the year, the Shin Bet security service has prevented 250 significant terror attacks, including suicide bombings, kidnappings, and shootings, he said. Argaman made his remarks to an international conference of public security ministers in Jerusalem, which had been organized by Israel s own Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan. The announcement came hours after the Shin Bet revealed that it had arrested a Palestinian man suspected of killing an IDF soldier during an arrest raid in a Ramallah refugee camp last month.
