4 References to Hashem redeeming us from Egypt appear repeatedly throughout the Chumash: in Shema, in the context of forbidden foods and the prohibition against charging interest on loans. Again that theme reappears in our Parsha when the Torah describes the laws of maintaining just measures and scales. You shall have correct scales, correct weights, correct dry measures and correct liquid measures I am Hashem your God, who brought you forth from the land of Egypt. (Vayikra 19:36) Rashi offers two explanations as to why Egypt is referenced specifically in this context: First God is saying He took us out of Egypt on the condition that we would live up to these ethical standards of commerce. Second, it is a reminder that just as Hashem was able to discern between the Egyptian and Jewish first born during the tenth plague, so too He is aware of those that adjust their scales unethically, even if only to the slightest degree. The Meshech Chochma observes that when the Torah refers back to Egypt, as in the case of Shema, it adds: להיותלכםלאלקים" - To be for you a God, but here the Torah stops short in saying simply that God just took us out. When a mitzvah is of a strictly spiritual nature, an irrational divine command, Hashem says he has done this to be our God to be a spiritual guide to help us navigate the world. We may not understand the mitzvah, but embracing it is to our spiritual advantage. In a case such as measures, however, the message The Measure of a Man Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Assistant Rabbi SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE: RABBI ARI BERMAN SHABBAT, MAY is much simpler, a conclusion we may draw on our own. A judge who frees an imprisoned person may have great hopes for him or he may not, but every judge expects that the person will appreciate the freedom enough to not end up in prison again. When freedom is granted, it demands a basic appreciation for the society one enters and the need to contribute to it. When the Jewish people were freed from Egypt their spiritual potential was indeed lofty, but first and foremost, they are called to maintain a basic level of moral behavior. Parshat Kedoshim vacillates between the rudimentary and the abstract, the spiritual and the interpersonal. It reminds us that no spiritual goal can take precedence over our basic responsibility to our fellow human being. How appropriate it is that we read Parshat Kedoshim this year in the days following Pesach. The themes of our Sedarim, of our tefillot and our learning explored the highest aspirations we have for ourselves and our people. But from the very beginning we are eversensitive to our most basic social responsibility; from our first gesture of hospitality at the Seder in Ha Lachma Anya to studying the historic and tragic deaths of Rabbi Akiva s students during the Omer. As we march toward Shavuot, the culmination of the Exodus process, we engage in the study of Pirkei Avot ethics born out of our rich tradition, as a fulfillment of derech eretz kadmah l torah pursuing a constant and consistent dedication to our friends, neighbors and greater society. Advanced Talmud Chabura, This year we will be studying the Jewish laws of mourning, from the Talmud through the Rishonim and the major poskim, utilizing a topical approach. Ancient Jewish History: Judaism & the Origins of Christianity, Rabbi Ari Lamm Christian thinkers long saw in the first few centuries C.E. the birth of Christianity and the death of covenantal Judaism. Jews have traditionally viewed this very same period as a golden age during which rabbinic culture flourished. Through close readings of primary texts, we will critically examine these and other perspectives as we take stock of an era that fundamentally shaped Jewish history, world history, and the very definition of avodat Hashem., Rotating JCU Faculty Life, Literature and Legacy: The Works of Rabbeinu Yonah, Rabbi Dovid Zirkind Among the great scholars and thinkers of Spain s Golden Age was Rabbeinu Yonah Gerondi. His writings are a window into both his unique rabbinic career and the religious challenges of his day. Structured around his commentary to Pirkei Avot, this course will explore the many works of Rabbeinu Yonah, his great accomplishments and his eternal legacy among the scholars of. Minchat Chinuch and the World of 19th Century Halachic Thought, Taught during Kiddush every Shabbat morning, this highly participatory class uses the classic Torah commentary of Nachmanides as a jumping-off point for an in-depth discussion of Jewish law and its developments. Topics relate to the weekly Parsha as well as pertinent contemporary halachic issues. Nosh and Drash, Adena Berkowitz Join us for this weekly Parsha shiur focusing on the intellectual and spiritual insights from the Torah. For women only. Rabbi Silverstein Mishnayot Class, Rabbi Yosie Levine A freewheeling discussion of Jewish law and custom. This year we are studying Mesechet Sanhedrin. Sleepless on Shavuot, Most of us spend somewhere between 25% and 33% of our lives sleeping. Far from being wasted time, it is replete with physiological, neurological, spiritual, and emotional significance. While sleep remains poorly understood from a medical point of view, it is equally under-explored from a spiritual and halakhic vantage point. This series will explore some of the primary halakhic questions concerning sleep, including; defining ideal durations, the role of sleep on Shabbat, and disturbing other people's sleep as a form of gezel. Women of the Bible, Rabbi Yosie Levine Beginning with Genesis, this series explores the lives and legacies of the women of the Bible. Through close textual readings and exploration of the classic Biblical commentaries, this class for women will attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the characters we know so well.
