1 1/10/14-10 Shevat 5774 Parshat Beshalach Candle Lighting: 4:32 pm Find us on Facebook Parshat Beshalach - It s All About Emunah Follow us on Twitter After Bnei Yisrael witnessed the most miraculous occurrence of Kriyat Yam Suf the Torah tells us that they complained to Moshe because of a lack of food. At the request of Moshe, Hashem decides to send Bnei Yisrael Mann from heaven as their sustenance. Hashem says that he will give them a portion of Mann each day that will only last for one day and a double portion on Friday for Shabbat. Hashem explains that this food system is a test for Bnei Yisrael. Rashi asks: how would giving Bnei Yisrael Mann be a test from Hashem, isn t it a wonderful gift? Rashi explains that this test was twofold. First it was a test of whether Bnei Yisrael would save any Mann for the next day, not trusting that Hashem would give them what they needed every day, and second Hashem was testing whether they would go out and gather the Mann on Shabbat. In essence these two tests are the same. The real test was if they would follow the rules of Hashem and thus recognize that G-D is the one who gives sustenance. This daily test was one given to Bnei Yisrael as a way to encourage them to always follow Hashem s instructions with total trust in him. This lesson is one that Bnei Yisrael needed to recognize before they were ready to receive the Torah as well as a lesson that we must all take to heart in our own devotion to Hashem. Ms. Danielle Goldstein Ivrit - Directions Turn left from Route 10 to Eisenhower Parkway. Go straight until you get to the second light, and then make a left at the second light to South Orange Avenue. At the first light, turn left to the school parking lot, and you will see Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy. The 7th graders were so excited to learn how to give directions and how to follow directions on a map in Hebrew. We enjoyed making our own maps and writing the directions for the map using the new words that we learned in the new chapter of our Neta book. The students became even more enthusiastic when the class was divided into two groups for team exercises. Each group had to give directions on a map that they made to get from our classroom to a different location in the school. Each group worked together beautifully, understanding, translating, and using the directions properly, which showcased their knowledge of Hebrew directional vocabulary. Students cannot wait to go to Israel to ask for directions in Hebrew with their newfound knowledge! While one 7th grade class focused on maps and directions, the others examined the best way to use time. The story on our Neta book about The Tortoise and the Hare taught students the dissimilarity

2 between the words Speed and Caution. The Rabbit was too confident and not cautious when he decided to rest in the middle of the race against the turtle, and the result, of course, was that the slow but cautious turtle won the race. Students then were required to write their own skits, with the goal of creating a conversation between two people. In the skit, students were to address the question: How do we use speed in our daily lives? Students considered using speed for sending letters, traveling to different places or communicating effectively between people. We look forward to the coming months as we continue to expand upon and develop our Hebrew knowledge. Ms. Azita Moradi Language Arts - Academic Integrity and the Pursuit of Knowledge JKHA fosters innumerable values; in our sixth and seventh grade Language Arts classes, we have focused on two: academic integrity and the pursuit of knowledge. We have used these concepts as a starting point for our exploration of using quotations in our writing. Additionally, we have been discussing the use of citations in our written work as well as practicing finding support for our assertions. Through the use of outside sources and activities related to our current novels, we have explored both the moral imperative to credit the source of any ideas or words we use in our writing, as well as the academic value to expand the potential for learning. Many students were already familiar with the concept of plagiarism. However, they have gained a new appreciation for the fact that their ideas could be so intriguing that a reader would want to know their source in order to continue the academic discourse. In sixth grade, we continued our character studies in Tuck Everlasting. We have practiced using citations to evidence the motivations behind each character s actions, and we will continue our reading and analysis to uncover even more of the intriguing plot. In seventh grade, we have practiced incorporating textual support into our writing about Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. We have spent time evaluating what makes a strong citation and how to accurately use sources in our writing. In some classes, I challenged the students to a citation competition. Everyone enjoyed the exercise and the winners enjoyed their prizes. Armed with a stronger and more comprehensive understanding of citations, each student will edit his/her writing after critically assessing whether the quotes used in the current writing assignment accomplish the goals we outlined. Additionally, the sixth and seventh graders are working on completing a second week of their reading logs. Energized with a goal of reaching 105 minutes of independent reading per week (and a slight incentive of extra credit!), there is an audible buzz in the classroom. The students are eagerly discussing books, sharing recommendations and perusing websites to find new releases. Ms. Staci Zeif Test Calendar

5 Upcoming Games Mishloach Manot This year the JKHA middle school student council is excited to offer all families the opportunity to send Mishloach Manot to the lower, middle and high school faculty members. Details will follow soon. Thank you and we look forward to your participation! PTC Corner Dara Horn Event PTC was thrilled to host an evening with Dara Horn, our school's former author-in-residence and author of "A Guide For The Perplexed: A Novel." She talked about what it means to be a Jewish writer and shared her thoughts on our compulsions to record everything that happens in our lives. She has extensive knowledge about Maimonides, a character in her latest book. Look for her article about the brilliant physician and philosopher in the weekend's Wall Street Journal. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you to JKHA/RKYHS families, community members, Dr Horn's family and others who turned out to make the event a success. We have a few copies of her book available for purchase. For more information please contact Shira Vickar-Fox, svickar@yahoo.com.
