3 Welcome to our ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES Classes for adults of all ages The goal of the Kol Tikvah Adult Education program is to provide insight, understanding, and education regarding topics that touch on various areas of Jewish life. Our courses include a multitude of topics including Torah Study, Jews and Food, Meditation, Mysticism, and Kabbalah, a book club focused on Jewish themes and writers, and much more. In addition, we strive to meet the needs of our community by offering poignant classes focused on the emotional struggles of mental illness. We proudly present many different areas of study, making Kol Tikvah a place of religious and educational growth. Over time, we hope that members will meet their fellow congregants, allowing them to grow their network of personal and professional relationships. Our hope is to make Kol Tikvah not only a synagogue but a true community center. 7 Weekly Torah Study...wrestle with the Biblical text... Rabbi Jon Begins on Monday, October 8, 2018 Kol Tikvah Clergy and Congregant-led If If there is one word that describes Kol Tikvah s weekly Torah study it is wrestling. Like Jacob wrestling with the angel in hopes of personal transformation, our clergy want their students to wrestle with the Biblical text in order to gain new insights that will affect their lives for the better. The Torah is studied through the lens of Reform theology creating a liberal, modern perspective on Judaism s oldest text. The weekly parasha is the focus, though occasionally a Jewish holiday will be the lesson of the day. In July and August, the class is congregant led. Feel free to bring your lunch. Coffee is provided. Classes are on Mondays from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. No Torah Study on Jewish and secular holidays. Cost: Free for members; First 4 classes are free for non-members, then $18 fee per session. No pre-registration required. Kol Tikvah Book Club Lisa Hanish Please join us if you loved the book, couldn t stand the book, or haven t read the book! In addition, we will occasionally get together for movie nights throughout the year. Members only. Held from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm. 8 Meditation, Mysticism, and Kabbalah Rabbi Jon Hanish The mystic s mission is to connect with God on a purely spiritual level. For mystics, this is accomplished through chanting, prayer, ritual and meditation. Jewish mystical texts and stories will be taught and discussed. At the end of each session, students will be participate in both silent and guided meditations. The goal is to develop an intellectual and spiritual understanding of one s connection to God. The study of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, is not easy but it is rewarding. No prior study or meditation practice required. All classes are held from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Dates: Monday, October 29, 2018 Monday, November 5, 2018 Monday, November 26, 2018 Monday, December 3, silent and guided meditations... Cost and Registration: Please see course fees on page 9 Rabbi Jon Introduction to Judaism Rabbi Jon Hanish, Rabbi Becky Hoffman, Cantor Noa Shaashua, & Dr. Esther Jilovsky Through activities, lectures, and discussion, students will be immersed into the rich and complex set of beliefs and practices that have come to define and redefine what it means to be Jewish. 10 A Writer s Workshop Rabbi Jon Hanish and Screenwriter Alex Litvak Over the past five years, the writer s workshop has written modern day midrashim and poems and prose on holidays and memory. The students work has been used as readings for the Kol Tikvah High Holy Days and the Yizkor book. Join screenwriter Alex Litvak and Rabbi Jon Hanish for four class sessions where you will reflect, express, and write. Class size is limited to 10. All classes are held from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. The Jewish Soul and the Christian Composer How Non-Jewish Composers have Portrayed Jewish Culture Over the Century Jonathan Degann One might expect non-jews to avoid Jewish themes in their music or to portray Jews with antipathy. Non-Jewish composers have often been very surprising in their use of Jewish culture and religious motifs in their music. We will explore the composer of the Messiah who was the most prolific in setting stories from the Tanach. The Kol Nidre theme was turned into a cello sonata by a German Protestant. The Kaddish was set, in Hebrew, by a French Catholic...and much more. All classes are held from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Dates: Monday, April 29, 2019 Monday, May 13, 2019 Monday, June 10, 2019 Cost and Registration: Please see course fees on page surprising in their use of Jewish culture and religious motifs... 12 SHABBAT MORNING SERIES The Book of Second Kings Rabbi Jon Hanish Saturday Classes are held from 9:00 am - 10:00 am Dates: February 9, 2019 May 18, 2019 March 9, 2019 June 22, 2019 April 13, 2019 In 722 BCE, the Northern Kingdom of Israel falls to the Assyrians. What will become of those once proud Jews living in the north? From Assyrians to Babylonians, the winds of war put a stranglehold on what remains of a once unified and then bifurcated Jewish Nation. Will Judah be able to survive the onslaught or will it also fall like its northern sibling? In the Book of Second Kings, we will learn about true leaders and those installed as puppets, the rise and fall of foreign powers, and how world politics affected both Israel and Judah. Bagels and coffee will be provided. Cost: No fee. RSVP is suggested to Debbie at dshayer@koltikvah.org For those interested in staying after class, please join us for a short Shabbat minyan service. Learner s Shabbat Minyan Rabbi Becky Hoffman Saturdays from 10:15 am - 11:00 am Dates: February 9, 2019 May 18, 2019 March 9, 2019 June 22, 2019 April 13, Ventura Blvd. Woodland Hills, CA koltikvah.org 10 When ten or more Jews gather together to pray, a minyan is created. This class will discuss liturgy, explore different melodies, and develop service leading skills. Regardless of familiarity with prayer, each student will be able to lead their own Shabbat morning service by the end of these five sessions. Cost: No fee. RSVP is suggested to Debbie at dshayer@koltikvah.org
