4 Joseph A. Solomon, 9th Grader at Torah Academy of Bergen County Writing in Honor of Youth Shabbat In the first pasuk in Parshat Pekudei, the parsha opens up with a pasuk that at first glance is difficult to understand. The pasuk says א ה פ ק ד י ה ן מ ן ה ע ד ת, א ר ד ע ל- י מ ה: ע ב ד ת, ה ל ו ם, י ד א ית מ ר, ן ה ר ן ה ה ן. Why does the Torah use a double reference to Mishkan? Also, why is there a double reference to pakad as if there are two mishkans being referred to and two different accountings or reckonings? And, as a last question, the Torah says that the work of building was done by the Leviim rather than by the Kohanim. Wouldn t it have made more sense if the Torah had said that the work was done by the Kohanim? Rashi says that the repetition of the word Mishkan is to hint to us of the destruction of the Batei Mikdashim many centuries later. But even Rashi s explanation doesn t explain why there are multiple references to pakad or why the Torah mentions Leviim and not Kohanim. Perhaps we can explain this with the Medrash on the pasuk three pesukim later. The pasuk, in talking about the gold used in the Mishkan, gives the precise amount of gold used: 29 Kikar, 730 shekels of gold. (Rashi says that the kikar is the same type of measure used to measure the gold in the Beit hamikdash.) It is on this pasuk that the Medrash says that the reason that the Torah gives the exact amount is to tell us that the people of Israel suspected Moshe of stealing their gold. It is with that stunning Medrash that we can answer the questions on the first pasuk. In that first pasuk, if one breaks or pauses between the two words, Hamishkan and Mishkan, as the ta amim indicate, the pasuk can be read to mean the following: This is the reckoning of what will happen in HAmishkan, which means the Beit Hamikdash according to Rashi. And what will happen there is based on the reckoning of what happened in the original mishkan itself. There are two references to forms of pakad because there are two reckonings, one that explains what happened in the mishkan and one that explains what will happen in the Beit Hamikdash. And the reference to the Leviim then becomes clear, too -- the Leviim did not take part in the building of the Egel Hazahav, so for that, they are mentioned in the building of the mishkan rather than the Kohanim. The parsha s first pasuk is reminding us that it was the misuse of gold that got the Jews in trouble by the Egel, which led to the Leviim building the mishkan. And the Torah (through the Medrash) is saying that it is that same mistrust of gold that is being referred to when the Torah recites the precise amount of gold mentioned in our parsha. In the desert, the Jews showed sinat chinam towards Moshe in mistrusting him. And in making that reckoning, the Torah is telling us that it will be that same sin that will ultimately cause the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash. This is a paid advertisement JC In the News!
