4 Truths, Opinions, and the Power of Vision Rabbi Noach Goldstein, Resident Scholar I once heard Dr. David Berger describe the resurgence of Orthodox Judaism in America as a reversal of self-evident truths. Torah study and mitzvah observance had no chance in this country, and the Jewish future exclusively belonged to those willing to cast aside traditional observance. Those who felt this way did not think that their view was a matter of opinion, but rather as clear, objective facts. And yet here we stand today, with a flourishing Orthodox community whose once unimaginable success is now seen as the self-evident truth. The same phenomenon lies at the heart of the meraglim narrative. In a celebrated comment, Rashi writes that the spies original report began on an accurate note describing Eretz Yisrael s fruitfulness and presenting a sample of its lush produce because the most persuasive lies contain an element of truth. Ramban expands upon Rashi s insight: a careful read of the text reveals that the spies entire first speech did not contain any falsehoods whatsoever. Moshe ordered them to collect intelligence on the land s economic potential and military defenses, and they did exactly that. They returned to the camp and reported that the land was lush while the inhabitants were formidable; both statements were completely true! The Ramban dramatically writes that only one word in the spies report was inappropriate, but that single word made all the difference. Rather than offer a dry intelligence report on the economic and military situation, they slipped an opinion into their speech: כּ י ע ז ה ע ם ה יּ שׁ ב בּ אָר ץ" "א פ ס It is for naught, for the people who dwell in the land are mighty. The malignant genius of the spies lay in their realization that, in their initial speech, spinning the facts would be far more effective than inventing them. By stating that the power of the native Canaanites rendered military success hopeless and cloaking that opinion with the same objectivity as the facts they reported the spies successfully shattered the nation s resolve. Thus the Ramban points out that the spies true slander, it is a land that devours its inhabitants, only came later that night, when they faced a terrified crowd willing to swallow outrageous fantasies that they would have once dismissed out of hand. "א פ ס" However, while the spies despondent cowed the nation into thinking the mission impossible, the opposite also holds true: relentless confidence could transform it into one eminently achievable, even routine! Therefore, it is imperative to analyze the response of Calev, the faithful spy: We should surely go up and take possession of [the land], for we are surely able to take it. He observes the same on-theground reality as the other spies, but, suffused with bitachon in God, makes the exact opposite diagnosis from his rivals. Later events bear him out: when the Israelites enter Canaan under Yehoshua, eighty-five year-old Calev leads an attack on Hebron, the mightiest of the strongholds he had scouted decades ago. The city that, according to the spies, could not be conquered by an entire army, fell to an old man who simply had faith in God s promise of victory. Fascinatingly, Yehoshua s narration of Calev s triumph is extremely anti-climactic; the book describes his petition to march to battle at length, but mentions his actual victory only briefly, almost in passing. The spies thought such a victory impossible, but from the perspective of Yehoshua and Calev, it was unremarkable, and the text wants to capture that perspective. The mountain always looks lower after the climber reaches the peak, but the best climbers can already visualize that while standing at the bottom. When considering the astonishing growth of our community the schools, synagogues, tzedakah organizations we must remember that self-evident truths do not reverse themselves. It took the faith and courage of a few heroic lay and rabbinic leaders, along of course with siyata dishmaya, to enable Torah to take root in the New World. Every generation requires its Calevs, and while in a sense the greatest testament to their accomplishments would be to take them for granted, we dare not do so if we wish to carry their lesson into the future. As our community prepares to celebrate the Jewish Center s centennial, we stand with our heads bowed towards the visionaries who preceded us, and pray that the next generation can look to its predecessors with the same admiration that we do.
