4 In comparison with his role as pioneering commentator on the Bible and Babylonian Talmud, Rashi s other, pivotal contribution to Jewish history receives relatively little attention: his role as popularizer of rabbinic literature. Indeed, the ubiquity in Jewish cultural history of the Sifra s jibe mah inyan Shemittah etzel Har Sinai ( What has the Sabbatical Year anything to do with Mount Sinai? ) is probably to be laid at Rashi s feet. Since Rashi, students of rabbinic literature have used this quip taken from the beginning of this week s sidra to question how one thing may be related to another; the rabbinic equivalent of What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? The irony, of course, is that the phrase is backwards. As commentators from the Rabad to the Maharal have noted, there is no need to explain the Sabbatical Year s presence in our sidra s context. It represents the logical continuation of last week s sidra and is related to what follows afterward. What actually requires explanation is the appearance, here, of Mount Sinai! The question, in essence, should be reversed: What has Mount Sinai anything to do with the Sabbatical Year? Indeed, perhaps this phrase spurring its hearers to pay closer attention to detail derives its piquancy precisely from the fact that its details have been garbled. In any case, upon reading this phrase in Rashi, I recalled a passage in an essay by Ahad Ha am, the doyen of cultural Zionism. The passage is wonderfully written, and strikingly relevant even today. In lieu, then, of a traditional Bulletin Dvar Torah, I have simply translated the passage and have appended forgive me a few thoughts. The passage is from Ahad Ha am s savage review, titled The Sin and Its Punishment, of Theodor Herzl s novel, Altneuland. In it, Ahad Ha am took special exception to PEACE OF MIND CONFERENCE AT THE JEWISH CENTER On December 4-11, 2016, The Jewish Center is honored to welcome our second group of 16 former IDF former soldiers from an elite high-risk combat unit through the Peace of Mind (POM) program. The unique POM program provides a bridge back to civilian life through a 3-month psychotrauma therapy program which includes one week in our community. The entire JC family, from the Youth Department through Advanced Leadership, is invited to be involved in this amazing week. Please join us in showing our hakarat hatov and creating a life-changing week for these soldiers who have given so much. We are looking for host families, cooks, chaperones, drivers, donors and more - whether you have a little time or a lot to give to this project (during the day or in the evening), we look forward to hearing from you at pom@jewishcenter.org. Thank you for your involvement! Ahad Ha am vs. Herzl Rabbi Ari Lamm, Resident Scholar Herzl s vision of the eventual Jewish State as including a secularized, sanitized version of the Third Temple built somewhere other than the Temple Mount. Ahad Ha am writes: Had any of these Europeans [that is, political Zionists like Herzl] attempted to envision the future of some other, foreign nation, that person would certainly have thought it necessary to prepare himself for the task by first investigating that nation s customs, beliefs, traditions, and development, so that he should not err in ascribing to that nation acts that are contrary to its character Now, had [Herzl and his colleagues] applied this to their own nation, Israel, they would undoubtedly have known that were the Jews to return to their homeland and establish a state for themselves, they would then have built synagogues, study houses and other communal institutions but not the Temple! They would leave that for the future still to come, when the son of David, shall purify the holy mountain and rebuild the Temple upon its historical site, where it always stood. And so, in fact, should a person turn to the Jews of the Pale of Settlement with that burning question What would you choose? Would you rather continue living in poverty, or be free citizens in a flowering Land of Israel, albeit one in which the Temple is not built on the Temple Mount? their reply will not be It s obvious, isn t it? but rather, to scoff at [Herzl s] Sabbatical Year and Sinai book, which assumes that it is somehow impossible for there to be a flowering Land of Israel, with Jewish citizenship, but without an immediately rebuilt Temple!...Ahad Ha am s point is that had Herzl truly valued Jewish culture s nuanced richness, he would have understood that a rebuilt State and a rebuilt Temple have as little to do with each other, at least in an immediate, political sense, as the Sabbatical Year and Sinai. But of course, only those sufficiently steeped in Jewish tradition to know that ultimately the Sabbatical year and Sinai are related will get the reference Clergy & Staff Yosie Levine Rabbi Dovid Zirkind Assistant Rabbi Chaim David Berson Cantor Daniel Fridman Resident Scholar Ari Lamm Resident Scholar Erica Brown Community Scholar Noach Goldstein William Fischman Rabbinic Intern Aaron Strum Executive Director Eliane Dreyfuss Glassman Director of Programming and Communications Jenn & Gaby Minsky Youth Directors OFFICERS Avi Schwartz President Andrew Borodach First Andrew Kaplan Mark Segall Rose Lynn Sherr Michael Jacobs Assistant Yaron Kinar Treasurer Len Berman Assistant Treasurer Miri Lipsky Secretary Phone Numbers Yoetzet Halacha Ilana Gadish nycyoetzet@gmail.com Jewish Center Chevra Kadisha x555 UWS Mikvah Hatzalah Eruv Status x4

6 MAZAL TOV TO OUR 2016 DINNER HONOREES Shira Orenstein & Daniel Kahn, Guests of Honor Yael Kahn Pinto & Tony Pinto, Rabbi Dr. Leo Jung Memorial Award Rabbi Dovid & Ariella Zirkind, Community Service Award YAEL KAHN PINTO & TONYT PINTO Yael grew up on the Upper West Side, and is a third generation member of The Jewish Center. She spent her childhood as an active member of the shul, from helping out at the clothing drive to being a group leader. After graduating from Rutgers University Magna Cum Laude, she earned her M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood General and Special Education from Bank Street. She has always loved working with children, and has a strong commitment to progressive Jewish education. Yael spent many years teaching and as a Camp Director at JCC Manhattan and is now an early childhood consultant with the Jewish Education Project. Tony grew up in Venezuela before moving to the New York area as a teenager. He first became active in synagogue life as a high schooler at Temple Zion in Long Beach. He was also very much involved with NCSY and the Bach Jewish Center. From there, he attended Yeshiva University and earned his Master's Degree in Biotechnology from Columbia University. Tony currently works in pharmaceutical compliance for Regeneron. Yael and Tony enjoy and appreciate the vibrant and multi-generational community at The Jewish Center. Inspired by Shira and Danny s and Margie and Hugo s (z l) involvement and commitment to the shul, together, Yael and Tony serve as the co-chairs of the Young Couples and Families committee. They love being able to introduce The Jewish Center to newcomers in the community. They have also run the Shabbat afternoon youth program for the last seven years, and truly value the relationships it has allowed them to build with children and their families. They are thrilled to be receiving this honor alongside Yael s parents and are proud to be raising a fourth generation Jewish Center member, their daughter Rozzie. & T The Jewish Center Annual Gala Dinner Tuesday, June 7, 2016 Guastavino s 409 East 59 th Street
