2 Dear Parents, Each year on the Shabbat following Yom HaShoah, we dedicate the day to hearing the miraculous yet heart-wrenching stories of Holocaust survivors. This weekend we are fortunate to welcome Fran Malkin, a real estate broker from New Jersey, who is also a child survivor from Poland, to share her story with our community at Seudah Shlishit. In addition, Fran has been gracious enough to address our children in an earlier slot before minchah from 6:30-7:15PM. Fran has spoken in numerous schools and institutions to adults and children of all ages. While we recognize the subject matter is difficult, for children who are able to participate, this is a program that will only become less available with time. We hope you will join us for a very special Shabbat afternoon together. If you have any questions about the program please feel free to contact me at dzirkind@jewishcenter.org Thank you! 4 One of the central rituals of Yom Kippur detailed in our Parsha is the sacrifice of the two goats. Two nearly identical animals are brought to the Mikdash on the holiest of days; by virtue of lots one is offered as a sacrifice on the Temple s altar, the other sent off to the desert. In the spirit of Yom Kippur s emphasis on repentance, Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch suggests that each of us is meant to imagine ourselves in this ceremony. Much like the identical animals, there are two futures that lay before us, yet to be determined. Just as the animals are sent in opposite directions, our choices in life can lead us to the highest of heights, or the lowest of depths. The only difference between our true lives and this sacrificial demonstration is that the animals futures are determined at random; on Yom Kippur our future is very much up to us. MARTHA SONNENSCHEIN MEMORIAL LECTURE BY LAYALIZA SOLOVEICHIK JUNE 4 FOLLOWING 9:00AM SERVICES Layaliza Soloveichik graduated from Yeshiva University as valedictorian in both Jewish Studies and General Studies. She then earned a J.D. from Yale Law School and clerked on the Supreme Court of Israel. She also clerked on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and became a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind Wharton and Garrison, LLP. Currently, she is an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Along the way she also obtained an M.S. in Jewish Education, and has given lectures in many Jewish communities around the United States. She is a sci-fi junkie and a chocloholic and regularly gets beaten at chess by her children. A Vision of Past and Future Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Assistant Rabbi This year, we read the Yom Kippur service on the Shabbat that falls between Yom HaShoah and Yom HaZikaron/Yom HaAtzmaut. In thinking about the imagery of the two goats, contrasting visuals of ourselves and our futures, one can t help this time of year in the same vein. The dark past of our people, the unspeakable suffering of the generation that came before us, is contrasted with the founding of the State of Israel, the resurrection of a nation on its holy soil, the start-up nation, emitting the bright lights of a better tomorrow. Without an image of the future, we may not have the strength to openly face the disappointments of our past. In the same way that Yom Kippur chooses to inspire us with an image of future success rather than the daunting threat of failed repentance, this week allows us to think not only of our weakest moments and our most traumatic, but of the sparks of a bright future and the already remarkable resurgence of a people of destiny. Each year, at the communal Reading of the Names, on behalf of our community I read the names of our relatives who perished at the hands of the Nazis. But on this very next Shabbat we sing HaTikvah together, celebrating Israel as a community. We recite a Yizkor prayer for the martyrs of the previous generation on Yom HaShoah, followed just a few days later by images of their children and grandchildren donning the uniform of our people and our State on Yom HaAtzmaut. The ebbs and flows of Jewish History are reflected over the course of just a few short days this season. Each of them is in one sense independent of the other, yet the holistic view argues they are inseparable. May the success of our present fortify our ability to engage the horrors of our past and may the present reassure us all, that the best is yet to come. Chag Atzmaut Sameach!
