4 This week s haftarah is fueled by fear. An unidentified divine messenger comes to earth to tell the wife of Manoah (a woman who remains nameless throughout the biblical text) that she will will have a son. Not just any son. This son will be a nazarite, a holy man who must abstain from wine and shaving his hair; he will also begin to save Israel from their oppression under the Philistines. The announcement is just for the woman s ears, and the messenger leaves instructions for her own prenatal care with her alone. The wife runs home to tell her husband Manoah the good news. He is skeptical. Is it possible that a strange man approached his wife when she was alone in a field and now she is pregnant? He begs God to send the messenger again: Oh my Lord please let the man of God that You sent come to us again, and let him instruct us how to act with the child that is to be born. The angel does come once again, but only to Manoah s wife. Implicitly, God seems to be telling Manoah to trust his wife. Manoah s suspicions, however, increase with this second appearance. Manoah asks to honor this messenger with a meal. Since angels do not have names nor do they eat, the angel refuses: If you detain me, I shall not eat your food; and if you present a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord. Manoah did not believe he was an angel and again asks for his name and is met with the angel s own impatience: You must not ask for my name; it is unknowable! Fear Not: Thoughts on the Haftarah for Naso Dr. Erica Brown, Community Scholar Human beings are terrified of encountering what is unknowable for us. We want mastery, not mystery. We need control. We recoil at the limits of our knowledge. The same expression used by the angel here is also used in Genesis 32:30 when Jacob fights the angel: Jacob asked, Pray, tell me your name. But he said, You must not ask my name! And he took leave of him there. The angel asks Jacob to know that there are things he will never know. As instructed, Manoah offered up his meal to God and watched the meal go up in fire from a make-shift altar; Manoah and his wife looked on; and they flung themselves on their faces to the ground. Manoah suddenly realizes that he will pay a price for questioning the divinity of this being. He turns to his wife in fear and says: We shall surely die, for we have seen a divine being. His wife reassures him that God took their offering and gave them a promise of a child, promises that would not have been made had God intended them to die. But what Manoah was really saying to his wife is that human beings cannot withstand fear, and he is no exception. She, in turn, tells him that that is not the case. We can confront fear. In his Journals, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, The wise man in the storm prays to God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear. 5 Mazal Tov to our 2017 Dinner Honorees Barbara & Guy Reiss, Guests of Honor Deena Blanchard & Akiva Novetsky, Rabbi Dr. Leo Jung Memorial Award Ben Cooper, Community Service Award Deena Blanchard and Akiva Novetsky are fiercely passionate about making a difference; actively giving back to the community in both their personal and professional lives. They love and are deeply committed to The Jewish Center. When they first joined, they were so impressed with how warm and welcoming The Jewish Center was and they decided to immediately become involved. Deena's participation began with youth event planning and later evolved into her serving as the youth co-chair. Under her leadership, together with Neil Leibowitz, the Youth Department is flourishing and welcoming more programming and more children than ever before. Most recently Deena served as a Vice President on the Board, serving as liaison to the office and the Youth Department. Akiva enjoys his role as one of the baal tokeahs on rosh hashana and is excited to continue this tradition on the upcoming high holidays. Professionally, Deena and Akiva are both physicians having graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Deena is a partner at Premier Pediatrics and Akiva is an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Montefiore Medical Center. Outside of the Jewish Center, Deena and Akiva are actively involved in the UJA Tov Beyachad initiative and Deena is excited about her volunteer work with the American Committee for Shaare Zedek, where she recently spoke at their annual Women's Division Health Day. Deena is also actively committed to helping identify and provide affordable access to treatment for women with postpartum mood disorders. She sits on the Advisory Board of The Seleni Institute and has been outspoken in her advocacy efforts. Akiva is committed to furthering research and hoping to develop improved ways of identifying and treating womens' cancers. He was awarded the prestigious Calebresi fellowship for Career Development in Cancer Researchers in Deena and Akiva are proud parents to Nathan, AJ and David and are committed to being active members and serving as volunteers in the Jewish Community and the greater world as a whole.
