4 The Rainbow Connection: Thoughts on Parshat Noah Dr. Erica Brown, Community Scholar Zokher ha-brit, ne-eman be-brito, ve-kayam be-maamaro. This is the text of the blessing we make upon seeing a rainbow: who remembers the covenant, and is faithful to His covenant, and keeps His promise. Strangely, we remind God, in this blessing of a promise God made long ago. We make a blessing when we see a rainbow not only because it s a spectacular natural occurrence but also because it takes us back to an earlier time. It situates us near the end of our parsha when, as a sign of God s covenant not to destroy us again, He makes a rainbow. This rainbow is not only about its magnificent blend of colors, representing the many stripes of diversity on Noah s ark. It is also about its shape as an expansive bridge that connects one part of the earth to another as it cuts across the sky. This bridge connects us once again, in an act of beauty, with a God we had been estranged from because of collective wrongdoing. To remedy the hamas or thievery to which the Torah attributed the flood, Noah s first act out of the ark was building an altar, a place of giving rather than taking. But a careful study of the text is confounding because God s promise does not quite have a rainbow quality to it: Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease (Genesis 8:20-23). God promised never to destroy all living creatures again. That s a huge relief. But tucked within this promise and the good smells that surround it, is this strange and disturbing clause even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. Let s face it. That s a downer. We will never amount to much because our evil inclination from the time we are young will continually overpower us. Suddenly, as Kermit might say, we re not feeling the rainbow connection. The German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm ( ) has a redeeming reading of this story. Fromm was the only child of Orthodox parents who had a strong Jewish education before he left traditional practice. These were texts with which he was intimately familiar. In The Art of Loving, Fromm reads the Hebrew word me-neurav as during one s childhood. This renders the promise as an understanding that God has of humans. During one s youth, human beings are self-absorbed. A baby crying cares little, he says, for what his parents are doing. The world orbits around the child. This normal course of events can change as the child grows into adulthood and comes out of his or her narcissistic shell. God s promise is predicated on our not staying the way we are. We have to grow out of taking and grow into giving. Some adults are just big children when it comes to taking. God expects more of us after the flood. Sure, we re selfish but that selfishness must peel away as we evolve and become responsible for humanity. That s when we can really appreciate God s promise and His rainbow. 6 Peace of Mind (POM), developed by the Israel Center for Psychotrauma/Herzog Hospital, provides a bridge back to civilian life through a 9-month psychotrauma therapy program which includes one week in our community. POM helps Israeli veterans who served in high-risk combat units, under extremely difficult circumstances, make a smooth transition back to civilian life. This workshop will enable the veterans to process their service experiences and let go of the burden they have been carrying around. PEACE OF MIND AT THE JC WINTER 2016 The JC is honored to welcome our second group of former IDF soldiers from an elite high-risk combat unit during their therapeutic workshop. The entire JC family, from the Youth Department through Advanced Leadership, is invited to be involved in this amazing week. Please join us in showing our hakarat hatov and creating a life-changing experience for these soldiers who have given so much. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Host the participants Sponsor lunch boxes, transportation or evening events for the group Chaperones activities Help drive participants to events Whether you have a little time or a lot to give to this project (during the day or in the evening), we look forward to hearing from you.
