4 As we prepare to begin the season of selichot, imagine for a minute that a new prayer replaced Ashamnu. The heading on the page would still read VIDUI/CONFESSION, however instead of enumerating our sins, this new text would boastfully list in elaborate detail all the wonderful things that we have done this year. Doubtless we would find such a confession bizarre, even vulgar. And yet, this week we are instructed that at the conclusion of the triennial tithing cycle, after completing the obligation to give various tithes and gifts to the Levites and the poor, we are to march into the Beit Ha-Mikdash, proudly detail how we have perfectly fulfilled the assorted commandments of the agricultural cycle, then summarizing with the bold statement I have listened to the voice of Hashem my God; I have done everything that he commanded me. Moreover, the Mishna consistently refers to this declaration as vidui ma asrot the confession of the tithes. A confession? It seems more like bragging! The biblical commentator Malbim (R. Meir Leibush Wisser, ) begins to unlock the mystery by explaining that the term vidiui should not in fact be translated to mean confession, as it appears in every siddur and machzor. The word does not have intrinsically negative connotations. Rather it means to make a report, to come before God and make an account of our actions, be it positive or negative. Furthermore, the Talmud (Sotah 32a) teaches that each vidui, the one detailing our sins as well as the one detailing our WELCOME RABBI NOACH GOLDSTEIN, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern Rabbi Noach Goldstein is beginning his fourth year in the Semicha Honors Program at Yeshiva University s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He is also working toward an M.A. in Medieval Jewish History at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Yeshiva University. Visit our website for his complete bio. JC DELEGATION AT THE AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE March in Washington, DC Over three jam-packed days, Policy Conference participants choose from hundreds of informative sessions and participate in the pro-israel community's largest and most important advocacy sessions. If you have questions or are interested in joining the delegation, please contact Eliane at eliane@jewishcenter.org or call x110. Bragging Before God? Noach Goldstein, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern successes, must be made in a whisper, for these reports are only between us and God. This distinction between confession and report is critical to keep in mind as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur approach. A confession dredges up the past with an admission of guilt, but does not easily lead to future change. It is made under pressure in an adversarial relationship, with the accused sullenly surrendering to the accuser s ruthless demand to cave and admit wrongdoing. The accused admits to as little as possible, and exits the process resentful rather than inspired. An annual report however is collaborative and forward-looking. We examine our activities of the past year, analyze which decisions were good and which were ill-advised, meet with God, make our report, and exit the process resolved to improve last year s shortcomings. Naturally during the season of judgment, those shortcomings receive greater focus. Additionally the opportunity God offers now for forgiveness demands that we seek it seek Hashem when He can be found (Yeshayahu 55:6). However the message is not one of relentless negativity. God does not only want us to approach Him as guilty supplicants; there is a time when we are commanded to make a full report of all the good we have done. The same term is used for each report because each has the same goal: to take stock of our actions before God, repair what is broken, and redouble our commitment to what is working over the coming year.
