4 Racheli Ahuva Hamburger December 27 th Miriam Esther Weiner December 27 th A Thought on the Parsha: Children Guiding Parents The reunion of Yosef and his brothers was an emotionally charged moment and one of the most important events described in Sefer Bereshit. It didn t happen the way Yosef might have preferred. Many things in life unfold in unexpected ways. The Passuk reads, V lo Yachol Yosef L hitapek L chol Hanitzavim Alav. Targum Onkelos says that Yosef being unable L hitapek means that Yosef could no longer contain his emotions. He just had to reveal his true identity. Rashi differs and says that Yosef couldn t bear the thought of embarrassing his brothers by revealing who he really was in the presence of his Egyptian ministers and attendants. The embarrassment would show on their faces. And there would be too many questions about how they had been separated. Ramban offers a very different explanation. Yosef was being pressured by the Egyptians in his court. They were pressing him to have mercy on Binyamin. They may not have heard every word spoken by Yehuda in Yosef s ear, but they got the message. They turned to Yosef and expected him to treat these Hebrew brothers from Canaan fairly and honestly. According to Ramban, when Yosef finally told his brothers who he really was, he did so because of mounting pressure brought to bear upon him by the Egyptians around him. Why would the Egyptians who worked for Yosef defy their viceroy? The Pharoh had declared that Yosef was second only to the Pharoh, yet these ministers openly questioned and were critical of Yosef s decision making. It can only be because Yosef had set a personal example of decency, of kindness and of compassion. All who were part of his court had learned Rachmanut from him, and therefore found it uncharacteristic of him to be so unfeeling for the plight of Binyamin and his brothers. The fact that they protested to Yosef is a tribute to Yosef. Who were these ministers? Yosef made believe that he spoke no Hebrew. Hameilitz Beinotam, the interpreter was between them, the Passuk says, whenever he spoke with the brothers. [Berashit 42; 43] Yosef s son, Menashe was the interpreter while Yosef feigned ignorance of the Hebrew language. It stands to reason that one of the people protesting Yosef s tough stand was his own son, Menashe. Ashrecha Yisrael, praise the Jewish people for having children who learn well from their righteous parents. Who absorb our good values and our idealism and hold up those standards for all including their own parents to see. In a difficult moment in our lives, when we may nearly abandon one of these virtues, our children remind us just how noble we can and should be. They confront us with support for and expectation of the kind of good deeds and good behavior we have taught them. With the grandchildren of Yaakov ready and able to implement the values they had learned from their father, Yaakov s family was ready to be reunited and to embark upon building the Jewish nation. Responsible fathers and mothers are powerful examples of virtue to their children. At the point

5 when a son or daughter has ample good judgement and moral discretion, he or she might save mother and/ or father from error. If ever we falter and one of our sons or daughters justly questions our judgement in the matter of how we are conducting ourselves, it is a tribute to us as parents. Needless to say, the young man or woman must express his or her concern with the utmost respect. Every parent should be proud of a child who is both properly equipped to lead his or her life in an upstanding manner and able to show the way, likewise, to others even to their own mother or father.
