Observing the 25th Yahrzeit of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Chol HaMoed Pesach 5778 will mark the 25th yarhzeit of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik z"l, the leader and teacher of an entire generation of Modern Orthodoxy in America. In anticipation of the Rav's yartzheit, The Jewish Center was honored to host Rabbi Aaron Rakeffet this past Monday evening. Rabbi Rakeffet was a student of the Rav and Professor at Yeshiva University, Israel, for the last 50 years. Rabbi Rakeffet focused his remarks on Rabbi Soloveitchik's unique approach to Zionism after the Shoah and how it helps better understand his life's journey and work. For those who were unable to attend the lecture, a recording can be found on YUTORAH.org I am very happy to report the completion of the fire escape rehabilitation. The entire fire escape, actually consisting of three separate structures, has been repaired, reinforced, scraped and repainted. And He called to Moses, and the Lord spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying. Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: When a man from [among] you brings a sacrifice to the Lord; from animals, from cattle or from the flock you shall bring your sacrifice. Commenting on this verse, Rashi highlights the word man and notes the following connection: אדם: למה נאמר, מה אדם הראשון לא הקריב מן הגזל, שהכל היה שלו, אף אתם לא תקריבו מן הגזל: A man: Why is this term used here [as opposed to which איש would be the classic term used for man ]? [It alludes to Adam, the first man on earth, and teaches us:] Just as Adam, the first man, never offered sacrifices from stolen property, since everything was his, so too, you must not offer sacrifices from stolen property. Rashi s lesson sounds quite logical: we ought not I SRAEL Sacrifice Rabbi Avi Feder to commit a crime of theft to then bring an offering to G-d. We must therefore understand what it is about Adam s korbanot that G-d wants us to emulate. Adam, as the only man, laid claim to all that existed, and therefore was able to offer sacrifices to G-d from that which was divinely given to him. Rashi teaches that when bringing a Korban, we too must offer to G-d from that which He gave us. The essence of a Korban is to serve G-d from that which he gave specifically to us. Each of us has specific talents, capabilities and means in life which G- has given uniquely to us. Some of those may be physical, others might be intangible; but the lesson is clear. What G-d wants from us is not an animal, but for us to serve him from that which he gave to us. Lacking the means to serve him with our animals as sacrifice, let us each resolve to find that which is uniquely ours and offer it up in the service of the almighty. UPDATE March 9, 2018 Guatemala President Tells AIPAC He ll Move Embassy to Jerusalem in May According to a report by The Times of Israel, Guatemala s president told the AIPAC Policy Conference on Sunday night that he will move his country s embassy to Jerusalem in May, and that the relocation will take place two days after the United States moves its embassy to the holy city, to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel s founding. In May of this year, we will celebrate Israel s 70th anniversary, said President Jimmy Morales, and under my instructions two days after the U.S. will move its embassy, Guatemala will return and permanently move its embassy to Jerusalem. Morales added, This decision strongly evidences Guatemala s continued support of Israel, and we are sure that many other countries will follow in our steps. In 1959, Guatemala was the first country to open its embassy in Jerusalem, but later moved it to Tel Aviv following international rejection of Israeli claims to East Jerusalem. U.S. President Donald Trump bucked decades of U.S. foreign policy by formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel s capital last December and setting in motion plans to move the U.S. embassy there from Tel Aviv.
