4 Matan Torah and Miskhan: Preservation or Progression Rabbi Noach Goldstein Any list of great debates between the Rambam and Ramban features their respective views of the Mishkan s purpose. In a celebrated passage at the beginning of Parshat Terumah, Ramban posits that the goal was to provide God s presence a permanent dwelling place in Israel, and thus transfer the Jews experience of divine communion at Sinai from a once-in-history event to a permanent reality. The primary support for this claim, God s explicit statement to Moshe: " ו ע ש ו ל י מ ק ד ש ו ש כ נ ת י ב ת וכ ם" They shall make me a sanctuary and I shall dwell among them (25:9). Typically, the Rambam is presented as subscribing to a far more technical view that the Mishkan s purpose was to enable Bnai Yisrael to offer sacrifices. After all, the very first sentence in his massive compilation of the laws of the Temple service begins, It is a positive commandment to make a house for Hashem that is prepared for the offering of the sacrifices (Laws of the Temple 1:1). As such, his view is often used as a foil for the Ramban s profound approach. However, doing so completely misses how the Rambam truly viewed the role of the house of God. In his book Mincha va-zevach, my teacher R. Dani Wolf demonstrates that the Rambam views the Mishkan and, later, the Mikdash, as filling a pivotal role for prayer. The Rambam counts prayer as one of the 613 commandments in his Sefer Ha-Mitzvot, even giving it pride of place as the fifth mitzva counted. Despite generally enumerating the mitzvot with extreme brevity, giving little more than a core description, here the Rambam finds it necessary to add that prayer is ideally performed in the Mikdash, citing evidence from King Shlomo s appeal at the inauguration of his Temple as well as from subsequent rabbinic literature. Apparently he thought that praying in the Mikdash is definitional to the mitzva of prayer. Rambam continues emphasizing the centrality of the Mikdash for prayer in the Mishneh Torah. He records in the beginning of the Laws of Prayer (1.3) that Jews prayed facing the site of God s house going all the way back to the days of Moshe and the original Mishkan, and R. Hayyim Soloveitchik is quoted as explaining that according to the Rambam, this is a Biblical requirement. Equally telling is the verse that the Rambam chose to write on the title page of his Book of Sacrifices, the ninth book in the Mish- ת כ ון ת פ ל ת י ק ט ר ת ל פ נ י ך, מ ש את כ פ י מ נ ח ת-" Torah: neh Establish my prayer as an incense offering before ע ר ב" you, my upraised hands as an evening sacrifice (Tehillim 141:2). Both sacrifices and prayer are quintessential forms of, andעבודה the Rambam teaches that the place for both of the house of God. A careful read of the Rambam s words elsewhere reveals that in his opinion, sacrifices and prayer both contribute to the same broader goal of the Mishkan: to create a central nucleus for the service of God, towards which the spiritual focus of the entire nation is oriented. There are several proofs to this, but the clearest is the continuation of his opening line in the Laws of the Temple: It is a positive commandment to make a house for Hashem that is prepared for the offering of the sacrifices and for the triennial pilgrimage, as is said they shall make me a sanctuary etc. The obligation for every Jew to appear before God on the Festivals, not merely to offer sacrifices but to report for duty as it were, is fundamental to the purpose of the Mikdash. It serves as the literal center of our spiritual universe, one that we turn towards daily and return to constantly. In truth, the Ramban and Rambam approach the new command to erect a Mishkan from two sides of the same coin: each views it as a response to the transformative revelation at Sinai. The Ramban focuses on preserve that experience, finding a way to crystallize it and impose it upon our day-to-day existence. The Rambam in contrast zeroes in on how we ought to react to that experience, how to advance the relationship with the Divine that was established with the giving of the Torah. The answer is to build God a house so that we may approach Him with love, fear, and an outpouring of devotion. 1 The relationship between Mishkan and Mikdash is its own topic, but R. Wolf shows that in the Rambam s opinion, the same commandment is fulfilled by constructing each.
