4 On a number of occasions the Torah highlights an obvious parallel between the observance of Shabbat and Shemitta. After six days of work we rest on the seventh, after six years of harvest the farmer rests on the seventh. In fact, the Torah often refers to Shemitta as a year of Shabbat further highlighting the shared theme of these two concepts. Generally speaking the lesson of these two Jewish experiences are understood as highly personal or self-reflective opportunities. After a hard week of work, each of us needs a day to rest, recharge and reconnect with our more spiritual self. Shabbat offers us the respite we so desperately need and deserve. The same can be said for Shemitta. The sabbatical year imposes on each farmer the gift of rejuvenation and the opportunity therein for spiritual rebirth. In Parshat Mishpatim the Torah again links Shabbat and Shemitta but in offering and alternative to one s function, it challenges us to revisit both. Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; but in the seventh you shall let it rest and lie fallow. Let the needy among your people eat of it, and what they leave let the wild beasts eat. You shall do the same with your vineyards and your olive groves. Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor, in order that your ox and your donkey may rest, and that your bondman and the stranger may be refreshed. Or visit JBI s website at JBI, since 1931, connecting the blind and visually impaired to the Jewish world. Shabbat Revisited Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Associate Rabbi While the connection between Shabbat and Shemitta holds true in our Parsha, in a very blatant way, the Torah redefines their join purpose. When a store owner closes his business on Shabbat it not only affects him, but it affects his employees. When a client chooses to observe Shabbat and not check in on his investments, it is not only he or she that has the day off but his or her financial advisor as well. Here the Torah says we observe Shabbat not for ourselves, but for our servants, for our animals, for our employees. The same is true for Shemitta. During that seventh year, it s not only the owner of the field that returns to prayer and Torah study, but it also means he demands less of his animals and farmers. He leaves the fields open which makes life easier for the poor that come to collect. Just as Shabbat forces us to create rest for others, Shemitta demands a less imposing dynamic on the people we interact with as well. Apparently then, we have two differing models of Shabbat and its objective. Throughout most of the Torah, Shabbat is about me and my relationship with Hashem, but in Parshat Mishpatim, in which we shift our focus to thinking about our relationship with others, the Torah posits that Shabbat is the greatest gift we can give to our colleagues, co-workers and employees. How remarkable a notion that the very day designed in our best interest is simultaneously a day in which we can give so generously to others. Each of us relies on and demands so much from the people around us, maybe we can use the time on Shabbat to rejuvenate not only ourselves but our sense of appreciation for just how hard others are working to help us achieve the success we pursue.
