JKHA Celebrates Shabbat Shirah

1 1/10/14-10 Shevat 5774 Parshat Beshalach Candle Lighting: 4:32 pm Find us on Facebook JKHA Celebrates Shabbat Shirah Follow us on Twitter In this week's parsha, Parshat B'shalach we read the song sung by Bnei Yisrael after the splitting of the Red Sea. In order to celebrate this special Shabbat, known as Shabbat Shirah, the entire lower school gathered in the auditorium to share some very special Shabbat songs. The students have been very excited about learning the songs in music class and enjoyed performing the different versions of the Zmirot Shabbat for each other. Ki Eshmera Shabbat, Tzur Mishelo, and D'ror Yikra were part of our Kumzitz repertoire. In addition to the singing, students learned to play a variety of percussion instruments to accompany the songs. The program concluded with an Israeli dance performed by a group of our very own fourth graders! They danced to the song Shalo Levo Shabbat. The auditorium was filled with so much energy and spirit. Here at JKHA we welcomed this Shabbat with song and dance as we remembered the miracle that happened at the Red Sea. 2 Look What's Happening In... The Pre-K students are learning to identify and compare geometric shapes. Pre-K Using the Frog Street Press reading series, the students learned the difference between Rudy Rectangle and Suzy Square. Kindergarten This week we studied Parshat B'shalach which describes Kriat Yam Suf (the splitting of the Red Sea). The children used their imaginations and their understanding of the parsha to create special illustrations of this nes (miracle). These illustrations will become part of their special Passover Haggadot.

3 First Grade Students in first grade have been learning about Martin Luther King and the importance of his message of peace. MLK said, "love your enemies". Similarly, Ruby Bridges, one of the first African American children to join an all white New Orleans public school, used to say a prayer for the mobs of parents who protested against her. She too, believed in peace at the young age of 6. Students made connections between Ruby Bridges and MLK. Second Grade In Kitah Bet, in preparation for Tu B'Shvat, we have been learning in Hebrew about different types of trees. The students have learned new vocabulary words related to trees as well as interesting facts about the various trees. As a culminating project for this unit, each student will be creating a mini tree research project. After the students chose the trees that they wanted to research, they started creating their very own Etz Sifron (tree book).

4 Third Grade The third graders are hard at work learning their multiplication facts. The students have been introduced to a variety of ways to master their facts, including flashcards, on line websites and fun games that can be played with their classmates. Mastery of the multiplication facts is a skill that will be useful throughout their math careers! Fourth Grade In honor of Tu B'Shvat, Kitah Daled is preparing a Sefer Matkon (Cook Book). The students wrote or transcribed their own matkonim (recipes) in Hebrew and illustrated the instructions. In class, we prepared for this project by learning new vocabulary, playing SmartBoard games, and practicing writing sample recipes.

5 Mishloach Manot This year the JKHA middle school student council is excited to offer all families the opportunity to send Mishloach Manot to the lower, middle and high school faculty members. PTC Corner Dara Horn Event PTC was thrilled to host an evening with Dara Horn, our school's former author-inresidence and author of "A Guide For The Perplexed: A Novel." She talked about what it means to be a Jewish writer and shared her thoughts on our compulsions to record everything that happens in our lives. She has extensive knowledge about Maimonides, a character in her latest book. Look for her article about the brilliant physician and philosopher in the weekend's Wall Street Journal. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you to JKHA/RKYHS families, community members, Dr Horn's family and others who turned out to make the event a success.
