5 5778 Rosh Hashanah EREV ROSH HASHANAH Wednesday, September 20 Service 6:00 p.m. ROSH HASHANAH DAY 1 Thursday, September 21 Service 9:00 a.m. Tashlikh 5:00 p.m. Sept. 20, 21, 22, 2017 ROSH HASHANAH DAY 2 Friday, September 22 Service 9:00 a.m. TASHLIKH SERVICE Thursday, September 21, 5:00 p.m. Meet at BMS and walk to the nearby pond located off East Fork Mine Creek Trail on Newton Road (part of the Raleigh Greenway system). One of the most beautiful and powerful rituals of the Yamim Noraim season is Tashlikh. Tashlikh, literally translates as you shall cast, and is a word used by the prophet Micah when he calls upon the Jewish community to cast their sins upon the water. Metaphorically, Micah was imploring the people to cleanse themselves of their mistakes and to repent. A more visual way to cast off our misdeeds, this Rosh Hashanah afternoon ritual is great for the whole family. We ll walk about a half-mile from the shul (on a paved trail, stroller and wheelchair accessible); bring comfy shoes, some old bread or crackers. Bimah Flower Sponsorship Honorable Mensch ens Sponsor the bimah flowers during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to honor or remember a loved one or celebrate a special occasion. The cost is $50 per dedication. The deadline for sponsoring the flowers is Monday, August 21. Flower sponsorships will be acknowledged in the Yamim Noraim Aliyah honors booklet. Please use the form on page 9 if you wish to sponsor the flowers on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. Do you want to honor, remember, show appreciation to and/or thank someone during the Yamim Noraim? The cost to place an Honorable Mensch en in the 2017 Aliyah honors booklet is $18. Please record the names of your honorees on page 9. Your name and the name(s) of your mensch(s) will be printed in our booklet. We regret that donations received after Monday, August 21 may not be listed in the booklet. We regret that donations received after Monday, August 21 may not be listed in the booklet. KEVER AVOT Traditional Cemetery Service at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery Sunday, September 24, 10:30 a.m. Death is the end of a life, but not the end of a relationship. Even after a person s soul has left this world, many of us find ourselves still yearning to share our lives with that loved one. Our tradition beautifully recognizes this need through the ritual of kever avot. During the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is an especially meaningful time to visit the cemetery, share our prayers for the upcoming year, and reflect on the lives of our deceased relatives and friends regardless of where they are buried. Please join us on Sunday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, as we partake in a ritual of remembrance. Directions to the cemetery can be found at 5

6 5778 KOL NIDRE Friday, September 29 Service 7:00 p.m. Canned food drive Yom Kippur September 29 & 30, 2017 YOM KIPPUR Shabbat, September 30 Morning Service 9:00 a.m. Yizkor (approx.) 11:15 a.m. Shoah speaker (approx.) 12:30 p.m. Book of Remembrance (Monday, August 21 deadline) Once again we approach the season of remembering. Although nothing can replace a memory fixed within a broken or mended heart, historians have had great success in reconstructing genealogies by simple means of Yizkor Bicher (memorial books). These books preserve, in a tangible and widely distributed form, the web of connections between people whose names and acquaintances might otherwise be lost to the tide of history. We at Beth Meyer Synagogue are preparing to publish the Book of Remembrance to be held and cherished by all who worship at the Study Sessions 2:00 5:00 p.m. Minhah 5:45 p.m. Neilah Service 6:45 p.m. Teki-at Hashofar 7:40 p.m. Yom Kippur Yizkor service, and again throughout the year at Shmini Atzeret, Pesah and Shavuot. This book reverently keeps before us the names of our departed loved ones and is a symbol of our love. Should you have loved ones you wish to memorialize, kindly complete the information on the form on page 9. Please include $5.00 per name of each loved one you wish to remember. The names memorialized on the plaques in the Beth Meyer sanctuary will automatically be included in the Book of Remembrance. Names received after Monday, August 21 may not be included in this year s Book of Remembrance. Annual Kol Nidre Canned Food Drive Please fill a bag(s) with non-perishable food and bring it to Beth Meyer Synagogue when you come for Kol Nidre Services, Friday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. All food will be donated to those in need. Children Lead the Way in the Neilah Service! Shabbat, September 30 Shoah Speaker Shabbat, September 30, 12:30 p.m. (approx.) This Yom Kippur, we will invite Holocaust survivor and Beth Meyer member, Morris Glass, to share his personal experiences during the Holocaust. Please note that Mr. Glass will offer his words shortly after the conclusion of the Yizkor service. Since many congregants honor their living parents by leaving the sanctuary for Yizkor, all are urged to return back to services so that this powerful moment will not be missed. You can be assured that Mr. Glass words will give you much to reflect upon during Yom Kippur and throughout the year. All children are welcome to participate in the Neilah service at the end of Yom Kippur. We will gather in the library starting at 6:00 p.m. but they must be at Beth Meyer no later than 6:30 p.m. in order to participate (the shofar will be blown at 7:40 p.m.). These two honors were given to individuals who provided outstanding service to the community over the course of the previous year. In fact, their commitment to their work was so strong, they were called This year, on Simhat Torah, Beth Meyer will honor Jennifer Etkin and Scott Checkoway for the wonderful gifts they have contributed to our congregation and the community-at-large.
