Using Rabbi Yaakov Nagen's (Yeshivat Otniel) Nishmat Hamishna (The Soul of the Mishna) we will explore the literary, halachic and philosophical aspects of the Mishna. Each shabbat we will examine a different Mishna in order to learn the halachotstemming from the Mishna as well to uncover additional layers of meaning. Example: The Mishna (Bracket 1:2) states that the time for reciting Sh'ma is based on the time that "the children of Kings wake up". Besides providing a specific time frame, what is the other significance of the phrase "children of kings"? Can it be an assessment of the Jewish people? Is it descriptive or aspirational? The entire Talmud is completed, one day at a time, in seven and a half years. Tens of thousands of Jews worldwide study in the Daf Yomi program. The class will take place in Freedman Hall Before Maariv, Sunday through Thursday. Sunday 9:00 am-10:00 am: with David Davies. A course developed by the National Jewish Outreach Program geared to those with a basic knowledge of the Hebrew Alphabet who wish to improve their reading skills and comprehension. There is no charge for this class. It takes place in Freedman Hall at UOS. Mondays 11:15 am-1:15 pm: Women s only Israeli Dancing Beginner thru advanced telling the story of the Jewish People and Israel today thru Dance. Cost $6/session. We will come together as a community to continue to heal and prepare for the Yamim Noraim. Serving for over two decades as Director of Psychology at North Shore University Hospital-NYU School of Medicine, and as Clinical Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine, he has consulted extensively with the Jewish community in the United States, Europe and Israel on a wide range of issues facing children and adolescents. Dr. Pelcovitz, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, has published and lectured extensively on a variety of topics related to education, parenting and child mental health. Areas of research and clinical specialty include family violence, the impact of domestic violence, stress management, transmitting values to children and adolescents and coping with trauma and loss. His most recent publication was Balanced Parenting," a book he wrote in collaboration with his father on parenting from a Jewish perspective 5
