6 The mission of SEARCH is to end homelessness in Houston. We re honored to be a member of their Council of Congregations. To mark World Homeless Weekend, October 12-14, 2018, we re inviting UOS members to donate adult-sized socks and basic hygiene items (deodorant, wet wipes, small bottles of hand sanitizer and mouthwash, feminine hygiene supplies, hairbrushes, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste) which will be distributed to homeless Houstonians. Please look for the collection box in the lobby and give generously. We d be delighted if every UOS family would participate in this worthy effort. Thank you! Doreen Lerner and Marisa Brown, co-chairs, UOS Tikkun Olam program Your Chesed committee has been hard at work. These are some of our activities. Would you like to join us in these mitzvot? If so, please doreenlerner@sbcglobal.net We d love to have you participate! As appropriate, kids and teens and not just adults - are welcome to be part of our committee. We have a housing site that has been having quite a few fires and smoke-related incidents due to the residents not knowing how to utilize the stovetop properly. These are folks who have been homeless for many years and a lot of them do not know how to cook. We are looking for a few volunteers to hold a cooking education session (or a couple of sessions) at the housing site so the residents, the staff, and the Fire Department can have a well-deserved break! If you choose to do this, you would be integral in working with SEARCH staff and the housing site Team Lead and case managers to plan, develop, and implement what makes the most sense and would be the most helpful to the residents. If you re interested in volunteering for this project, please contact Doreen Lerner: doreenlerner@sbcglobal.net Prayer For The IDF & US Military As we recite the prayer for members of the Israeli Defense Force on Shabbat and Yom Tov we keep in mind those Israeli Soldiers held in captivity and missing in action Ron Arad Guy Chever Yehuda Katz Zecharia Baumal Zvi Feldman and those connected to our congregational family in active IDF & US Military Zvi Boruch Altman Elad Imany Akiva Gilad Brody Azriel Oz Brody Roni Buchine David Chertoff Yonaton Cytrin Samuel Gorme Zach Katz Reuben Morris Gavriel Saitowitz Jake Saitowitz 6
