1 HIGH HOLY DAY GUIDE 5777 / Coldrey Avenue, Ottawa Ontario K1Z 7P9 Kehillat Beth Israel
2 Dear Congregants, Welcome to our Kehillah! We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your membership. As members, your support is vital to the ongoing sustainability of our new synagogue, its programs and services. Enclosed in this package, you will find your ticket(s), parking permits for each High Holy Day as well as a schedule of all upcoming High Holy Day services. Security and safety is our utmost concern especially in these difficult times, so please make sure to bring your ticket(s) with you to Shul as you will need them to gain access into the building. Parking is permitted on certain city streets, so please refer to the special event permits included in your package. The laneway near the office is best used for assisted drop-offs. Handicapped parking is available in designated handicap spots along the laneway and main parking lot. Only those with visible handicap signs will be permitted to park in the designated spots. SERVICES AND LOCATIONS The High Holy Days are a time for reflection, introspection, prayer and re-connection. Kehillat Beth Israel is pleased to offers three types of services to meet the spiritual needs of our diverse community. We encourage you to participate in all three services and use our open seating policy where applicable. Designated areas have been allocated in the Main Sanctuary for reserved seat holders and for members with physical needs. Please refer to the Schedule of Services for a list of dates and times. TYPES OF SERVICES Throughout the High Holy Days, we will be providing children with age-appropriate programs and services. Naturally, all activities will be in the spirit of the High Holy Days; there will be no writing, colouring or gluing allowed. Kosher, nut-free snacks will be provided to program participants. If you would like your child to participate in any of these programs, please complete and forward the registration form included in this guide. We would also like to remind our youth to refrain from texting by leaving their electronic devices at home. Main Sanctuary Small Chapel Lower Level Auditorium Led by Rabbi Eytan Kenter, Cantor Daniel Benlolo and the KBI Choir Led by Rabbi Ilana Foss (visiting Rabbi) Young Family Service Led by Rabbi Deborah Zuker On behalf of our Clergy, Board of Directors and staff, we wish you and your family a happy and health New Year. Ian Borer, Executive Director, Kehillat Beth Israel
3 HIGH HOLY DAY GREETING FROM OUR CLERGY Rabbi Eytan Kenter Rosh HaShanah is Just the Beginning You go to the store and find this amazing dress on sale. You try it on, it looks amazing, everyone loves it. You have just the right shoes and accessories to go with this dress. You take it to the register, buy it and stick it in the closet. You are so excited for an opportunity to wear it. And it sits there and sits there. You have practically forgotten about it, in the collection of dresses that hang in your closet. That thing you were so excited about sits unused because you couldn t find an opportunity to wear it. In a matter of weeks, we will all gather together in Kehillat Beth Israel for Rosh HaShanah. We will see people we like. We ll be inspired by the tunes and prayers that we recite together. Maybe the sermons and other teachings will speak to us and our lives. And then for many of us, we ll hang the synagogue back up in the closet, waiting for the next opportunity to pull it out. This year, we are running some fantastic programs over the High Holy Days and Sukkot. When you arrive at the Shul, you will find a program guide which contains other amazing offerings you can expect from your congregation this coming year. Not every event will speak to every person, but perhaps by perusing the list of offerings, you will find a program or two that make you want to pull that dress out of the closet. Rosh HaShanah marks the beginning of the Jewish year. It is all of our opportunity to start the year off on the right foot, but following that first effort, hopefully, we will all be able to build off of it to even greater heights. I look forward to the prospect of kicking off our first High Holy Days together, but I also look forward to the chance to celebrate countless other wonderful moments in your lives and in the life of the community throughout the year. Shana Tovah! Rabbi Deborah Zuker Dear Congregants, I am incredibly proud and excited to be a part of the new Kehillat Beth Israel family. Along with our clergy, staff, lay leadership, and amazing congregants, we are building something truly special here in Ottawa, and we are all privileged to get in on the ground floor. There are many exciting plans in the works for KBI in our first year, as well as many opportunities to get involved. Please check out our learning, prayer, and social programs - there is something for everyone. I hope you will set the kavanna (intention) for the New Year to stretch yourself spiritually and intellectually, to try some-thing new, and to share your strengths and abilities with our sacred community. Wishing you and your family health and blessing in the New Year. Cantor Daniel Benlolo Is there anybody out there? It is a question that has prompted Jewish organizations to examine the subject of unaffiliated Jews in their 20s, 30s and up, who do not belong to any synagogue or Jewish organization. They often equate this lack of affiliation with being secular, Jewishly undereducated, or finding Judaism and its complex web of laws to be secondary in their hectic and demanding lives. Another possibility might be that people stay uninvolved with anything Jewish until it is time to send the children to Hebrew school, celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah, wedding and inevitably in time of need. Indeed, the recent Ottawa Jewish population survey may show a high correlation between these trends, so this stereotype may be well-founded. If this population had more Jewish education and a stronger Jewish identity, would they become affiliated with the organized Jewish community? It is my hope that we can ignite a spark within ourselves and challenge us to make a difference. Members of Kehillat Beth Israel must seize this opportunity to fill that spiritual void in the life of a family by bringing them closer to their heritage. Some argue that the system does not know what to do with young Jewish families and singles who work in the secular world, and consequently does not cater to their needs. I say, give us a chance. Every year families from around the city come through for Bar/Bat Mitzvah tutoring for the sole purpose of filling that spiritual obligation. They eventually become members of our Kehillah and this is when it becomes our duty to entice them to remain. The question arises, if a multigenerational Jewish community were inclusive of educated laypeople, respectful of individuals with or without families, and open to inclusion in various aspects of Jewish life, would it be a place for all the unaffiliated Jews? The answer is a resounding YES. But first we must ask ourselves some hard questions and be able to give some straightforward answers. I understand... it has been a topic of discussion and debate in Jewish communities around North America and around the world and it will require a large-scale transformation of the Jewish community. In the meantime what can we do right here in our own backyard? We are at a pivotal stage in our existence and must no longer wait for leaders in the community to come up with a solution; we must be a viable and significant solution. It is the hope of the leadership of this congregation and you, its members, to build this bridge so that the unaffiliated might find their way home to Kehillat Beth Israel. My wife Muriel, our children Jonathan and Lea, Eve, Shira and Michael join me in wishing all of you a Shana Tovah u Metukah, a sweet year filled with health, happiness and prosperity. Shana Tovah u Metukah - a Sweet and Happy New Year!

7 Kehillat Beth Israel Congregation Nursery and Youth Services Registration Form Dear Kehillat Beth Israel Congregants, All children who plan on attending the nursery or youth services must be pre-registered. This information is vital to ensure your child s safety, and will ensure proper staffing and better program preparation. All programs are provided free of charge. If you have any visitors with children from out of town, please ensure that they are registered as well. High Holy Day programming will be offered each morning during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (from 10:00 AM 12:30 PM), as well as Kol Nidre (6:00 PM 8:30 PM except for the nursery). We will offer 3 different, age-appropriate programs: the nursery, for children kindergarten-age and younger, as well as a service for children in grades 1-3 and grades 4-6. Each program will be comprised of educational and non-educational activities to ensure your children have a meaningful and enjoyable High Holy Day experience. Additionally, on the 2 nd day of Rosh Hashanah, teens can join Noga, our Shinshin, for a special teen schmooze program at 11:00a.m. Please note that children are not to be unsupervised in the foyer or hallways. To ease the work of our security team, we ask that children either attend their appropriate youth service or remain in the main services with their parents. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for your help in making these programs a success!
