2 On this night we remember a fifth child This is a child of the Shoah, who did not survive to ask. Therefore we have to ask for that child - why? We are like the simple child. We have no answer. We answer that child's question with silence. In silence, we remember that dark time. In silence, we remember that Jews preserved their image of God in that struggle for life. Youth Hymn Our song is filled with grieving, Bold our step, we march along. Though the foe the gateway's watching. Youth comes storming with their song: Young are they, are they, are they, whose age won't bind them, Years don't really mean a thing! Grown-ups also, also, also can be children In a newer, freer, spring! translation: Roslyn Bresnick-Perry 1 From Mishkan Tefilah

Yisrolik So come and buy some cigarettes, Some candies and some cake! These goods were never cheaper than today. My like is worth a penny That's all I ever make This ghetto here is where I earn my pay I'm called Yisrolik. Kid from the ghetto; I'm called Yisrolik, Tough and I am strong Though I'm left here in this ghetto -- I can give give you a whistle and a song! A coat without a collar. A shirt made from a sack; I have galoshes - but I'm out of shoes. Whoever starts complaining Whoever starts so laugh - Just be careful - I'll show you who I am! I'm called Yisrolik... Don't think that I was born here, This miserable street I had my mother and my father too. But now I have no family. Don't think it is a choice, Wandering 'round like wind and gypsies do. I'm called Yisrolik When no one is looking. Secretly I wipe away a tear. I've had troubles - Let's not talk about it. Why remember, It makes me feel so sad. Though I'm left here in this ghetto -- I can give give you a whistle and a song! translation: Robert Abelson

I once had a sister, She is here no more. Where are you, my Esther, In this difficult hour? Somewhere near a little tree, Somewhere near a gate Lies my brother Shloymele, Murdered by the Germans. I once had a little home, Now I feel despair. I'm like an animal Slaughtered without care. Oh, God in Heaven, Look down to the earth below. See yow your little flowers die, Have been chopped down. Now I'm just a little rag Because I am a Jew. translation: Roslyn Bresnick-Perry Yehuda Bacon. A girl, a sheepskin, and a beret, In her hands she grips a gun. A girl with a face as smooth as velvet Keeps watch of the enemy s caravan. An aim, a shot, right on the target. Her small pistol had reached its mark, An auto filled high with ammunition Her shot had stopped it with one try. At dawn she crept out of the forest, With snowy garlands in her hair. 12 Thank You Joyce Rosenzweig: We have spent hours in both the downtown and uptown campuses combing through music, making agonizing cuts, the hours (okay, the days) learning Yiddish, and interpreting this music. You even indulged the kids. I don't know how I could have done this without you. You worked hard for this day! Thank you. Cantor Benjie Schiller: We don't just learn music when we're together, I feel like I just learn. Thank you for your patience and your guidance. Cantor Faith Steinsnyder: Your input is always spot on. You respond with such patience as I stop you in your tracks to ask questions, request the perfect musical suggestions, send you s, or just vent about how emotional this is for me. No one has ever composed music for me to sing. I am overwhelmed by your generosity. Thank you. Jeffrie Allen: You have tricked, bullied, and yoga-ed my voice into an instrument I can finally start to rely on regularly. If I sound good today we can all collectively blame you, if I don't it is just because I wasn't listening. Thank you. Cantor Robert Ableson: Once again, working with you has changed the singer I am and helped me present the text with integrity. Thank you. David Deschamps: You don't just accompany, you teach me how to mold music so that I can convey its message. I value the time we spend together, and I so appreciate the hard work you did in preparing me for this day. Thank you. Harriet Lewis, Elio Cruz, Nano Estevez, Miguel Bisono, Edwin Rolon, Jose Morales and Viviano Pena: I know that when I let you all know what I need I don't have to think about it again. Because of your hard work and dedication, I am able to come in and be creative; if you weren't here, I never could. And you are really nice about it. Thank you. Andy Estavez: You transform my art projects into professional work. You are a magician and we are lucky to have you! Thank you. Robert Cheatham, Andrew Fort, Jacqueline Roman, and Carl Taylor: I feel safe in this building because I know you are taking care of us. We rely on your sound judgment and even tempers. You're impressive. Thank you. Ivan Barenboim: You are a consummate performer. You have added texture and meaning with your music. Thank you. Kenneth Feibush, Jennifer Rueben, Lindsay Schoenberger, and Jordan Shaner: I knew that when I asked you to sing particularly difficult music, you would be willing and immensely capable. Of course I was right. Thank you. Laura Breznick, Emma Goldin, and Lauren Levy: I love being part of our group of women! Your calming presence gives me the confidence I need. When we sing together I feel your love. Thank you. Laura Breznick, Kenneth Feibush, Emma Goldin, Vladimir Lapin, Lauren Levy, Jay O'Brien: I couldn't have asked for a more supportive, loving class! The theme songs help. The food might be helping more. You have created a safe environment where I can test new ideas and grow. I really couldn't have done it without you! Thank you. Halina Birenbaum, Sophie Weisz Miklos, and the Nadel family: You haven taken time out of your days, you have written words of courage and hope, and your willingness to walk courageously through your darkest days with me and for me have been among the greatest gifts I have been given. Thank you. The Incredible Dubinators: Shira, Liron, Noa, and Ari, you have listened to more repetitive Jewish music in these last years than most Jews hear in a lifetime! When I ask, you rise to the occasion. You guys soooo rock. I promise to learn your names soon. I love you more than the moon and the stars. Anne and Harold Hoffman: I don't often get an opportunity to tell you publicly how grateful I am that you are my parents. I'm also grateful that you still pick up the phone when I call even though it's probably just to complain about how emotional this topic is. Thank you for continually reminding me that I have a sense of humor even when I'm losing my sense of perspective. And for reminding me to do other stuff, like eat and sleep. I love you. The Good Rabbi Doctor Andy Dubin: You are my favorite husband. It's nice that you never get to bed at a reasonable time, either. No one else understands the minutiae of my life as you do. The little things you do, like filling up hot water bottles, and finding the things that I'm looking for that are right in front of my face, are actually the big things that matter. The big things you do (cooking dinner, washing dishes, cleaning the house) are the fabric that is holding my life and the kids' lives together - they're beyond big - they're essential. You tell me you love me by your actions and I believe it. I love you too.
