It will apply only to government and private schools following State Board syllabus. It is not mandatory for CBSE and other Board schools in the State. Thirukkural will be included under moral education, marks of which will not be included in the final tally. As per the government order dated March 21, students from Stds. 6 to 12 will learn 105 athigarams or chapters of Thirukkural that will be included in the curriculum. Students in these classes will have to study 15 chapters a year. The move comes after a High Court order on a PIL filed by Rajaratnam in Madurai bench in which he demanded that 1,330 kurals of Thirukkural should be taught to school students to improve moral values. The State government has also ordered the SCERT and Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation to create more moral stories, songs, cartoons and animations based on Thirukkural in both conventional and digital format so that it reaches the global Tamil community. Aadhaar mandatory for registering vehicles As per the circular issued by the State Transport Department to RTO offices on March 15, Aadhaar card in the name of the vehicle owner has been made mandatory for registering vehicles. Apart from Aadhaar number, PAN number and mobile number are also collected from the vehicle owners and fed into the database.

More details can be had in youths held for multiple robberies Three friends, Vijay (23), an engineering student, Vivek (21), an engineering diploma holder working in a private firm and Moses (25), a graduate working in a private company, were arrested at around 1 a.m on March 10 for committing a spree of robberies at knifepoint in various parts of the city between 8 p.m and 11 p.m on March 9. They are residents of Padikuppam, Thirumangalam. On receipt of complaints about three youths committing several robberies within a short span of time, police teams picketed important junctions in the areas where the crimes were reported (T. Nagar, Teynampet, Nungambakkam, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar). The three youths, in a drunken state, were finally arrested by a patrol team at around 1 a.m in Nungambakkam. They had robbed cash, mobile phones and jewellery from nine persons including an auto driver in T. Nagar, a doctor, a police constable, an old woman and a call taxi driver. The stolen cash, jewellery and mobile phones were recovered from them. They have been remanded to judicial custody. International Water Day held in Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya Thakkar Bapa Vidyalaya (58, Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar) observed International Water Day on March 22. Thirunavukkarasu (AEE, Metrowater), in his address, said that well water and bore water, which used to be potable, have become salty over time due to exploitation. He said that Metrowater is constantly adopting various methods to save and recycle water and is also creating awareness among the public on saving water. Nagar, crossing the road beneath the flyover has become a difficult task. If the residents of the streets abutting Usman Road want to cross, they now have to go either to Ranganathan Street junction or use the narrow pathway diagonally opposite Venkatasean Street/Rangan Street junction. This pathway, which is meant for the exclusive use of the pedestrians, is being misused by two-wheeler riders. They use it as a short cut instead of using the wide space available opposite GRT and Chennai Silks. Further, the pathway is also crowded with shoppers buying goods spread by roadside vendors/hawkers beneath the flyover. As walking itself is an uphill task on the crowded path, the 2-wheelers plying on them pose a danger. Further, the road is also riddled with obstacles like protruding manhole covers, bolts and nuts in several spots. The other day, a 2-wheeler rider hit a pedestrian causing grievous injury. The authorities should erect barricades at both ends of the pathway to prevent 2-wheelers from entering it. Only this will ensure the safety of the pedestrians crossing the road under the flyover. V. Traffic police have kept a barricade on top of the chamber to caution motorists The cover of the drain often gets damaged as heavy vehicles run over it. The cover had sunk into the chamber almost a month back, and is yet to be replaced. I appeal to Metrowater officials to cover the opening immediately to prevent any untoward incident and also to strengthen the mouth of the chamber to ensure that its cover does not get damaged by vehicles passing over it. He was 68, and had been a resident of Ashok Nagar for more than 35 years. He had worked in EID Parry Ltd. He was General Secretary of Samata Party and its legal advisor too. According to the police, the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle, which mounted the pavement and came to a halt. No police complaint was lodged. Nagar Trendsetters (a chapter of Chennai Runners Association) conducts group running activities at 5 a.m from Tuesday to Sunday in Panagal Park, Bashyam Road, T. Nagar. The running sessions are free. Namasivayam (Co-ordinator) in Street dogs help catch stalker after he stabs woman and runs Two street dogs, raised by Ram (an autorickshaw driver), chased and stopped a man from escaping after he attacked and stabbed a 31-year-old woman in the stomach in Jagadambal Street. T. Nagar on the morning of March 22. According to the police, the dogs chased R. Raghunath (23) of Sivakasi, who tried to flee after stabbing his former colleague C. Suchismitha (employed with Ashok Leyland s R&D Department), allowing the locals to catch him and hand him over to the Mambalam Police. Raghunath had once misbehaved with Suchismitha while in service and, based on her complaint, he had been sacked. He has been unemployed since then. Since then, he had been nursing a grudge against her and tried to kill her on March 22 to seek revenge. He had also been stalking her and observing her routine over the past two weeks to plan his attack. Suchismitha was admitted in a private hospital for treatment. Suchismitha, a native of Calcutta, has been residing in a ladies hostel in T. Nagar for 3 years. On March 22, at around 6.30 a.m, when she was walking to the bus stop, Raghunath waylaid her, pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the abdomen. His violent act followed by Suchismitha s scream, agita-ted the two dogs standing close by and, when Raghunath tried to flee, they charged at him and barked incessantly. Raghunath, who panicked, hit a bike parked on the roadside and fell. He was caught by passersby and handed over to the police. According to Ram, had the dogs not given chase and scared the assailant, he would have easily escaped through the deserted streets as it was early in the morning.
