NAGAR EDITION Vol. 15, No. 36 March 12-18, 2017 New platform in Mambalam station inaugurated FREE Suresh Prabhu (Minister for Railways) inaugurated the double-discharge platform in Mambalam station last week. This is the third platform in the station with direct access from Mambalam side. The double-discharge platform is a much-needed facility where commuters can get down from both sides of an EMU. Hitherto, passengers from Mambalam side had to climb the overbridge to enter/exit the platform, and to avoid it, many crossed the tracks thereby risking their lives. Also, since the train stops for only a few seconds, having such a The city police arrested a 16- year-old boy last week on charges of snatching mobiles phones from pedestrians in Ashok Nagar and T. Satagopan - The Forgotten Hero Movies began to talk and sing in Tamil in As early Tamil cinema inherited the legacy of the Tamil theater, music, or more precisely songs, dominated Tamil films. Films contained as many as fifty songs and this number was advertised with pride on posters, in song books, and elsewhere. In the bygone decades, all films had song books which were sold at movie houses, shops and by pavement book sellers at low prices. Today they are great sources of information and a part of film history. The books gave the story in a capsule, credits of artistes and technicians and the songs. Sometimes even the ragas were mentioned. Some had even still photos which are invaluable today. Sadly the practice of bringing out song books died some years ago and that important source of film history is lost forever. Today such old film aong books are collector s items. Until the late 1930s there was no voice-lending behind the screen due to lack of necessary technical facilities for such a system. The actor had to sing himself or herself while the camera rolled. (In Hollywood the word actor is used for both sexes, thanks to Women s Lib!). Consequently producers sought the services of stage actors and Classical Carnatic musicians. Thus, during the 1930s and the early 1940s, many such musicians came into films but not many lasted for long. The reasons were many. Firstly there were not actors by inclination nor did they have any professional training in acting. Secondly most of them were Brahmins and they could not shed their Brahminical accent while delivering the dialogues! Most of them came from orthodox and tradition-bound families and the freewheeling leisure-pleasure, easygoing, fun-loving, female-filled ambience did not help matters! After a film or two they went back to their world of music. Of course not all of them were saints but social and peer pressures forced them to keep up appearances and play the game of social hypocrisy! This list of noted classical male musicians includes Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer (one film), Musiri Subramania Iyer (one film), Thiruvavaduthurai N. Rajaratnam Pillai (one film), G. N. Balasubramaniam (five films). And in that list was another musician, V. V. Satagopan. For a short period he was in movies and, in spite of his handsome looks and singing talents, stardom eluded him. V.V. Satagopan, B. A., as he was styled in the film credits, hailed from an orthodox middle class Brahmin Ayyangar family. He had good looks and showed a flair for music even at an early age. Like many middle class young men of his time he went to college and took his B. A Degree. Besides he underwent training in Classical Carnatic Music and attained a good standard of proficiency. Not surprisingly he cut gramophone records (then known as plates ) for Columbia Recording Company. The most successful song he recorded was Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal s composition in raga Saraswathi Manohari, Entha Vedukonthu O Raghavaaa. The disc was a best seller and indeed that song and Satagopan became synonymous! Like Nagumomu and Musiri Subramania Iyer! Satagopan took his bow in movies in 1937 with a nowforgotten film Navayuvan (Modern Youth) or Geetha Saaram. In that era Tamil films had two titles, with one in English too! As Tamil films played all over South India in that era with no sub-titles or dubbing, an English title was given to make non- Tamil moviegoers understand what the film would be all about. Damaged roof of bus stop shelter removed after report in Mambalam Times Following the report Bus stop shelter badly damaged, published in Mambalam Times (issue dated Feb ), the damaged roof of the shelter and two supporting stainless steel poles in the front were removed last week. The poles in the rear carrying an advertisement hoarding, and benches, which are in good condition, have been left untouched. The shelter is now without a roof forcing commuters to wait in the sun for buses. They have appealed to MTC to reinstall the roof. Tree trunk blocks road margin A 10-ft long trunk of an uprooted tree with roots is lying on the margin of P. V. Rajamannar Salai, K. K. Nagar. The tree had fallen during the cyclone last December. Its main branches were cut and removed leaving but a large portion of the trunk was left behind. It is causing obstruction to pedestrians and motorists and also poses a danger at night as it is not clearly visible. Ashwin had lost the battle to cancer in According to his parents, their son who was in college at the time, found great solace in trauma and pain by listening to music. It was his no cost and most effective pain killer and a mood elevator. He used to feel better and get sound sleep, says Ashwin s mother Manonmani. His loss motivated us to do something for terminally ill cancer patients in hospitals in the city. It was also our son s wish that music be used to alleviate the distress faced by cancer patients, especially those from the lower rungs of society, and we decided to fulfill it, they said. Initially started with the help of Ashwin s friends, the Foundation today has more than 100 volunteers who organize music sessions in cancer wards in hospitals. Manonmani in or register in the Facebook page LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Banks should not charge any fee for cash transactions Sir, Some banks have started charging a fee for cash transactions from savings bank account holders beyond four free transactions a month. This is nothing but daylight robbery. Having lured customers into opening accounts with tall promises, does this move not amount to betrayal of trust? Why should a customer be penalized for transacting his own cash, be it withdrawal or deposit? What is the rationale behind this move? Is it to reduce cash transactions with the thrust for online banking or do these banks not have enough money to pay their staff, or are the staff over-worked and transactions beyond five will further burden them? Many, especially senior citizens and housewives, open accounts to avoid keeping cash at home and withdraw in bits and pieces as per their needs. Why should they be taxed for withdrawing money at their own convenience? And, who are these banks to put a cap on transactions? One evening, after court hours, a family group of my wife Lakshmi and daughter-in-law Monisha and a man from Kanchipuram Cooperative Bank marched into my chamber with a request from the Kanchi man for an opinion on a legal point from me. I hate pressing the button to call for the help of my staff, and so got up and called the newest stenographer to take my opinion. She was a pretty girl freshly appointed by the State Government and transferred to the G.P s office. The girl (I forget her name now after so many years) took my blabber correctly and the opinion was ready in 10 minutes. Sir, I have come here several times in the past and had to spend a minimum of two days in the city for urgent opinions on legal points concerning the eligibility of the Kanchipuram silk producers for grant of loans. Often I had to toil even three or four days to get the opinion. Thank you. I shall give you the name of the Silk Emporium who sought the loan so that they will, if you buy any silk saree from them, give you a rebate. I thanked him but said, I don t buy silk since it is a product of cruelty. The new stenographer, a beautiful one, was shocked! A couple of its low lying branches are almost at eye level. One of them is leaning across the pavement blocking the way and forcing pedestrians to either bend under it or walk on the busy road. K. Nagar ) with various disabilities during its annual cultural fest Saaraansh last week. According to an educator at the Foundation, the children had practiced hard for the show for over 45 days. The script was mostly based on what the children hard learnt in their class. Nagar took a predictable course with pedestrians welcoming the initiative and local traders accusing Chennai Corporation of scant consideration for their welfare. But compared to the 1 st trial last November, this time there was lukewarm response from the residents. The trial run was carried out between Thanikachalam Road junction and Panagal Park, a distance of around 700 metres, from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. In November, the traders had downed shutters under protest, but most kept their shops open this time around despite poor turnout of customers. The traders opined that restricting entry of vehicles to the main shopping areas would dissuade even regular customers from visiting the shops.
