Railway police to protect passengers from harassment in stations Following the murder of a 52- year-old man by a transgender person in Minjur Railway Station last month, personnel attached to Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) will intensify patrolling in all suburban railway stations from Beach to Tambaram, Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations and all major railway stations where long distance trains halt. TodayTamil movie music is popular not only in Tamil Nadu but all overindia.it has also crossed oceans, scaled mountains and reachedaround the world to nations like the United States of America,Canada, Latin American nations, the United Kingdom, Europe and, ofcourse, Sri Lanka, Far Eastern countries like Burma (now Myanmar), Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan andother nations. This series will narrate not only about music composers but also about lyric writersand some poets of yester decades whose songs have beenused in Tamil Cinema, like Bharathiyar, Bharathidasan, SaintThyagaraja, Tukaram, Thulasidas and several others. It will alsoinclude singers, both on-screen and behind screen, male and female, whohave contributed with their melodious singing to the popularity andgrowth of Tamil Cinema Music around the world. Some of the playbacksingers have been as popular as onscreen movie stars, if not more, and thisseries will look at their work and contribution. This series begins with the first articleabout the legendg. Ramanathan, who has contributed invaluably to Tamilfilm music. Besides composing, he also sang quite a few songs andappeared on screen in minor supporting roles in some movies. He alsoattempted film production at which he was not successful, but sadlybrought him more grief than garlands! Here it goes - the first article on the iconic music charmer G.Ramanathan who was affectionately known to many as GR. When Tamil Cinema began to talk and sing in October 1931 with Kalidas, a new era began in its history, and Tamilians were morethan keen to hear their language, dialogues, and songs coming out ofthe silver screen, which was earlier dumb! Demand for Tamil talking and singing pictures began to snowball andin 1932 a film was planned to be produced in Bombay. Based on a playby Pammal Sambandam Mudaliar, Gaalava Rishi (most of the filmhistorians called this film, Kalava Rishi which is absurd! Kalava in Tamil means canal or ditch! This confusion arose because of theambiguity in Tamil script regarding certain alphabets like ka, pa, ga,da, and such).. It was a play was about the adventures of Arjuna, with SageGaalava. This was at first planned in 1931 as a silent film but, while it was still in the planning stage in Bombay, Kalidas flashed on the screen breaking barriers and the producers decided tomake this too as a talking and singing picture. The person who wrotethe script, dialogues and lyrics and composed the music was a Tamilscholar well trained in Carnatic music with experience in Tamiltheatre, now totally forgotten, G Sundara Bhagavathar. He had a youngerbrother who went along with him to Bombay to assist him in composingthe music by playing on the harmonium in which he was well versed.that brother was G.Ramanathan who would later not only make waves but alsocreate history in Tamil Cinema and its music. (This writer had the pleasure and privilege of knowing Ramanathanfairly well and had sat in adjoining chairs with him at many Englishmovies at the now demolished Rajakumari cinema in T.Nagar. G.R nevermissed any musical from Hollywood, carefully took notes, and absorbedby mental osmosis the music, both in the background and on screen.one such movie was all about the Rock and Roll music. Fascinated by ithe asked his then composing assistant, G. S. Mani, a Carnatic musicianwith knowledge of Western music, all about rock n roll...) MTC deploys trainee conductors at bus stops In order to assist passengers, buses of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will now wait for nearly 30 seconds to help them comfortably get on board. It has deployed over 100 trainee conductors at various bus stops in the city to keep a check on buses and ensure that autorickshaws and share autorickshaws do not halt near bus stops. 5 April 5-11, 2014 School dropout champions cause of education 28-year-old M.N. Sai Krishnan helps poor students in the slums of Mettupalayam (Perambur) by running a free after-school tuition center in Chennai Primary School. At 14, Sai Krishnan dropped out of school to support his family. Today, he is giving hundreds of children the gift of education that he himself was denied. He started his livelihood as a door-to-door salesman, then worked as a machine operator, and now supplies water cans for a living. Sai Krishnan said that when he discontinued studies, he did not realize what he was missing as he wanted to help his father tide over a financial crisis and he fancied himself as an entrepreneur in the making. I was a go-getter and had picked up organising skills by participating in events during my school days, he said. I was however not good at studies. It was only after working for a few years did I realize the importance of education in one s life, he said. Sai said that his motivator was his teacher Sheela Kamleshwari who used to offer free tuitions for weak students after school hours when other teachers were charging exorbitant fees. Krishna water arrives to offer relief to city Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh has finally arrived in Uthukottai, Thiruvallur district, about 150 km away from Chennai on March 30. The Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to release Krishna water to Chennai for three months. Krishna water proves to be crucial at this time when the water resources are fast-depleting and the groundwater level is also on the decline. While half of the amount received would be utilized for the city s water supply, the remaining amount would help step up storage of the city reservoirs maintained by Metrowater department, which are currently at 30 per cent of their storage capacity. Currently, residents are being supplied with 585 million litres of water on alternate days. Every 500 cusecs that the reservoir receives is equal to 1,200 million litres a day, which is enough to significantly improve piped water supply to the city, according a senior Metrowater official.
