Shanmugam Salai, K. K. Nagar was removed a few months back by Corporation and Metrowater Board workers following complaints of sewage water contamination. Neither has the source of intrusion been located nor has the drain been closed. Following repeated complaints from K. K. Nagar 4 th Sector Civic Exnora, T. Parthasarathy (Virugambakkam MLA) inspected the spot on Dec. 24. M. S. Owners of sealed shops told to move monitoring panel The Madras High Court said on Dec. 21 refused to order removal of seals on shop buildings in T. Nagar area placed by Chennai Corporation and CMDA on Oct. 31 for alleged building rule violations. Instead, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice M. Y. Eqbal and Justice T. S. Sivagnanam, directed the shopowners to approach the monitoring committee appointed by the High Court for redressal of their grievances. The committee should examine the details on merit and, in accordance with law as to whether the construction is legal and as per the sanctioned plan, so that the seal may be removed till the disposal of the cases. It should pass individual orders on such requests as expeditiously as possible considering the Supreme Court observations. The First Bench fixed the 4th week of January for disposal of the cases. The Ranganathan Street Merchants Association had filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court order on Nov. 1. The Supreme Court disposed of the appeals with observations. Later, some interlocutory applications were filed and the Supreme Court disposed of them with observations and direction. The First Bench said that from the Supreme Court s order, it appeared that the shopowners who were represented by their association and some of them who had filed individual cases were aggrieved by the CMDA and Chennai Corporation s action in sealing their premises on the basis of the report of the monitoring committee, that too without giving them an opportunity to make submissions.
