Vehicles are also parked on the opposite side thereby reducing the usable width of the road to less than 10 feet. Nearby residents said that in spite of the no parking sign and blatant violation by ve- hicle owners, no action is taken by the traffic police to seize the vehicles or fine the offenders. Nagar is under renovation with a new visitors hall and other amenities. PRS counter in Mambalam sells suburban tickets ets at a counter which was earlier selling only reserved tickets for long distance trains. Southern Railway has started a trial run to sell unreserved suburban train tickets (UTS) at passenger reservation system (PRS) counters to ensure optimal utilisation of railway staff in the wake of digitisation. Counter number 1 in the reservation office in the ground floor of Mambalam station has been earmarked for issuing these tickets from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. This will come as a relief to thousands of commuters who have to stand in long queues to buy a suburban train ticket. At the same time, the utility of booking clerks at PRS counters, who have less work than those at the UTS booking counters due to the increasing popularity of e-tickets, will be boosted. According to senior officials, this would be replicated at other stations like Chennai Beach, Central, Tambaram and Egmore. This counter will not sell tatkal or reserved tickets and has been exclusively earmarked for UTS tickets. Railway officials said that the scheme has been implemented despite stiff resistance from booking clerks in the division. September 17-23, 2016 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Appeal to remove garbage enclosure in Moovendar Street Sir, I am a resident of Mooven-dar Street, Mutharaman Koil Street. There is an unused garbage enclosure on the pavement opposite our apartment. Garbage bins are kept outside the enclosure and are overflowing with garbage. Garbage is also thrown around the enclosure. Passersby have converted the enclosure into an open urinal. The horrible stench and the unhygienic condition have become health hazards for residents. Cattle and dogs rummage through the garbage strewing it all over the place. It has also led to proliferation of mosquitoes. We appeal to Chennai Corporation to dismantle the garbage enclosure for the benefit of the residents. R. V. The new platform, being on the roadside, will help commuters as they will not have to climb the steps to the overhead bridge to reach the platform. But even before the work has been completed, many commuters are risking their lives by boarding trains from the unfinished platform. Railways should put up barricades and prevent commuters from using the platform till it is officially opened. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Tatkal processing only in Regional Passport Office Applicants for passports under the tatkal category have to file applications only in the Regional Passport Office, Rayala Towers, Anna Salai. Since Aug. 17, tatkal applications are not being accepted in the three passport seva kendras (PSK) in the city. According to Regional Passport Officer K. Balamurugan, the new system has been introduced mainly to decongest the PSKs. The verification of various documents takes a lot of time, and in the case of tatkal applications, additional documents need to be verified. This resulted in congestion in the PSKs. Hence it was decided to shift the tatkal application submission to the main office on Anna Salai, he said. Those whose applications are rejected under the tatkal mode can apply with the same application under normal mode in the PSK in Saligramam between 2 p.m and 4 p.m on all days except Monday without obtaining appointment. An online form filling center has been opened in the Rayala Towers office to help the common man fill passport application forms at a cost of Rs. 155 per application. It is proposed to set up such centers in all taluk offices in Tamilnadu. These centers will be operated with the help of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation, he added.
